Notices for contributors this week

A very late week, with most reports short or incomplete at publication deadline. I wasn't available to fill in the gaps as quickly as usual on Monday due to behind-the-scenes Signpost developments and crises at the ArbCom elections, and while the former should bear fruit soon and the latter expire for another year, with SMasters inactive and insufficient numbers of volunteers, we are going to need to up our game collectively we are to meet the Signpost' potential. Thanks to all who contributed in a difficult week, especially to Tarheel, Rock drum, Kangaroo, and most of all Crisco for their hard work alongside the regular reporters. Skomorokh 18:15, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Everyone interested in Signpost matters is invited to join the IRC channel at #wikisignpost connect.
  • Check http://identi.ca/wikisignpost and the suggestions page for possible news items to cover in the upcoming issue (especially for the "News and notes", "In the news" and "Technology Report" sections), and the Signpost resources page for further sources and other information about each regular section.
  • Standard weekly schedule
  • Tuesday–Thursday: start. Start all pages that are to be included in the next edition.
  • Friday: draft. A rough outline of topics to be covered should be in place by end of Friday, so that if a regular reporter is unavailable over the weekend, another can follow up their leads.
  • Saturday–Sunday: mature versions. Aim to have reasonably mature drafts of all pages for comments by the managing editors, fellow journalists, and other interested editors. Signpost editors recommend any structural changes, reductions in length, expansions in scope, necessary coordination between pages, postponement to subsequent issue. Copy-editors go through the drafts.
  • Late Sunday to early Monday: trouble-shooting. Fresh stories added by the "Next issue deadline" (only if sufficiently topical and important).
  • Monday: last-minute tweaks and copy-edits; publication.

Not sure what's going to happen with the whole special issue we were trying to craft. Sko, we going to run it this week or just dump it? ResMar 00:57, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some form of special/report/interview on editor retention will run tomorrow, almost definitely. Whether the opinion piece runs alongside depends on if they are complimentary; I'll need to review it to see how the initial comments have been addressed. If it comes to it, will you be available to work on it over the next day or so if there is more to be done? I really want to run the piece tomorrow, so I could cover at NAN for you if necessary. Skomorokh 16:10, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I went over yours and Sven's comments again last week; any new ones you have you should post onto the page and I will try to address them. ResMar 17:11, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Doing. ResMar 16:05, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Basically finished, additional improvements welcome. ResMar 17:11, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I missed this; good material for another special story, may or may not do later today. ResMar 17:18, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is the Bell Pottinger affair worth mentioning? It's receiving a humble amount of press coverage. HurricaneFan25 16:07, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This in all likelihood will be the biggest story of this week, so please by all means feel free to start writing. Skomorokh 16:10, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is mostly done, but I'm still waiting on an interview with Wehwalt. Only 8 pieces of featured content this week. Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:53, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • There is a basic interview there. I will be waiting until about 11 pm my time (4 pm UTC) for further answers from Wehwalt, and then I will mark it as finished. Anyone who wants to do a copyedit, please feel welcome. Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:01, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom elections wrapping up, no Arb report? Skomorokh 21:03, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

ArbReport done. Only a brief nod to the elections though. jorgenev (t|c|s) 03:16, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Regular responsibilities

Signpost journalists can claim responsibility for regular features, and continue writing their beat for as long as they wish. If you would like to be a regular writer for The Signpost, add your name to the appropriate task. If you'd be willing to cover a story that is usually covered by another editor, or are willing to cover it sporadically when the normal writer can't, add your name to the Backup list so you can be contacted when the need arises – the more the merrier. If a beat is not assigned to anyone and no draft for the next issue is listed above, anyone should feel free to write it that week.
