Cynthia Basinet (born May 19, 1971) is an American jazz singer, actress and humanitarian. Her most notable artistic work is a 1997 cover of Santa Baby, a rendition of Joan Javits's 1953 christmas song. The work was incorrectly attributed to Marilyn Monroe[1][2]. Cynthia is also distinguished for her humanitarian work, bringing to light the injustices by the Moroccan regime against the Saharawi people of the Western Sahara and has address the United Nations on several occasions[3]. For her work she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005[4][5].
Humanitarian Work
Cynthia was approached in 2001 and has since then been involved with the United States Western Sahara Foundation. As part of this work, she has visited the Saharawi people on many occasions and sung at a concert organised by the Foundation. On several occasions she has come before the United Nations Fourth Committee addressing Special Political and Decolonization Affairs of the Western Sahara on behalf of the Saharawi as a petitioner outlining the conditions and the injustices that the Saharawi people face. For all of this work, she was co-nominated in 2005 for the Nobel Peach prize as part of the PeaceWomen Across the Globe[6][7].
Professional Career
Cynthia's career began as a model for I Magnin Department Store. Shortly after she was spotted by Bob Mackie working in his fashion shows then being represented by Grimme Agency that was the hottest modeling agency in San Francisco in starting the careers of Suzanne Somers, Christy Turlington and Jack Scalia. She then spent the next 5 years in Europe modelling including campaigns for Bennetton with famed photographer, [[Oliviero Toscani]. After moving back to Los Angeles, Basinet moved away from the modelling industry and began acting, partaking in over 100 national commercials, music videos and movies. She is a member of SAG. Shortly however, Basinet moved into singing, something that she was always drawn by.
Musically, Cynthia has released several albums and singles, the most notable of which is a rendition of Santa Baby. It was produced in 1997 as a gift for then partner Jack Nicholson. It was soon distributed online. The work is often mistakenly attributed to Marilyn Monroe. The song is also featured track in Party Monster.
