Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Company (SZSE: 002202, SEHK2208) or Goldwind is a Chinese government wind turbine manufacturer based in Urumqi, Xinjiang. The company is one of the largest turbine manufacturers in China and one of the top five in the world.[1]

Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd. specializes in R&D, product development and the manufacturing of large-sized wind turbines. It is principally engaged in researching, developing, manufacturing and marketing large-sized wind turbine generator sets. The Company's major products include 600 kilowatt (kW), 750 kW, 1.2 megawatt (MW), 1.5 MW Permanent Magnet Direct Drive (PMDD) and 2.5 MW PMDD series wind turbine sets. The Company also provides wind power technology service, development and sale of wind power projects and technology transfer service. During the year ended December 31, 2009, the Company installed 3669 sets of 750 kW wind turbine generator, 1583 sets of 1.5MW wind turbine generator, and 1 set of 2.5 MW and 3.0 MW wind turbine generator each. The Company distributes its products mainly within the domestic market with some installations in foreign markets such as three of its 1.5 MW wind turbines in Pipestone, Minnesota, USA.

Goldwind has enjoyed annual 100% market share growth for the last 8 years consecutively. In 2007, Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd. reported that it has been holding 25.25% market share in China's wind power market, again ranking top amongst other suppliers.

History

In 1986, Xinjiang Wind Energy Company was established, marking the beginning of wind power development in Xinjiang, China

In 1989, 13 BONUS 15 0KW WTGs introduced from Denmark and installed at Dabancheng, to form the largest wind farm in China and Asia at that time.

In 1998, newly established Xinfeng Scientific and Industrial Trade Co., Ltd. of Xinjiang undertook the national key scientific and technology project of the 9th Five-Year-Plan to develop 600 kW wind power generating sets.

In 1999, the 600 kW wind power generating set was successfully developed.

In 2000, the company started the tough task of converting itself from an R&D-oriented enterprise to a market-oriented enterprise and trying to achieve a “zero” sales breakthrough. It also became the first Chinese wind turbine manufacturer to achieve ISO9001 certification.

In 2001, the company changed completely to Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd of Xinjiang. The new company was then authorized to undertake three national scientific and technological projects, namely the research and development of a “MW stall-regulated wind power generating set and its key components", which is part of the “863” plan of the State, industrial production technology of 600 kW wind power generating sets, and the development of 750 kW wind power generator sets, both of which are key scientific and technology projects for the State’s 10th Five-Year Plan.

In 2002, China’s first large-scale wind turbine assembly plant with an annual capacity of 200 units of 600KW~1MW WTGs was established.

In 2003, Goldwind became China’s largest wind turbine generator developer and manufacturer. VENSYS erected the first 1.2 MW prototype in Germany (1.5 MW direct-drive in production).

In 2005, the first 1.2 MW wind power generating set was put into operation in the Dabancheng wind farm. The company received investment support from SeaBright Asset Management, Ltd., Hong Kong, a joint venture between China Everbright and Seagate Global Advisors[2] under the direction of CEO William Lawton.

In 2006, Goldwind Wind Energy GmbH was registered and established in Germany. In February, Goldwind Science & Technology Creation Wind Power Equipment Co., Ltd was established in Beijing. In August, Goldwind won the tender for installation of 33 sets of 1.5 MW WTG, a project for the Beijing Olympic Games.

In 2006, Goldwind achieved a domestic market share of 33% and ranked #10 globally based on annual installed capacity. Mr. Wu, Chairman and CEO of Goldwind, received the World Wind Energy Award

In 2007, the first batch of five 1.5 MW WTG sets were put into operation in the Dabancheng Wind Farm. On December 26 , Goldwind went public at the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

In 2008, the acquisition of VENSYS was completed. Goldwind achieved a global top-10 ranking in the past three consecutive years based on annual installed capacity.

In 2009, 2.5 MW permanent magnet, direct drive WTGs installed in China China, generation started in early February 2010

In 2010, to expand the publicly traded shares of Goldwind and raise international expansion capital, over $1Billion was raised in an IPO on the Hong Kong Exchange with cornerstone investors from both Asia and North America. Offices were set up in the USA and Australia as well as installing its first three wind turbines in the USA.

Operations

Goldwind has won market growth performance of over 100% for eight consecutive years.

By December 31, 2008, Goldwind had sold 3,527 wind turbines totally, with a cumulative capacity of 2894.1 MW. In 2008, the wind power market maintained rapid growth in China, the company had sufficient orders. The company has not only a large number of orders for 1.5 MW units, but 750 kW units were still favored by the market. New orders of 1532.25 MW were increased, including 750 kW units for 804.75 MW, and 1.5 MW units for 727.5 MW; By the end of 2008, the company implemented a total capacity of orders for 1541.25 MW, including 750 kW units for 170.25 MW, and 1.5 MW units for 1371 MW. In addition, the company achieved a breakthrough in international sales by signing a supply agreement of 6 sets of 750 kW units with ENERGOIMPORT company in Cuba and shipped them in December, it achieved a revenue of 33,223,700 RMB.

In addition to the signed orders, the company won the bid of 811.50 MW of the 10,000,000 kW Base Project in Jiuquan, Gansu Province, which has laid a good market foundation for continued development in next two years.
