Allen Gregory is a short-lived American animated television series created by Jonah Hill, Andrew Mogel, and Jarrad Paul that aired on FOX. The series premiered on October 30, 2011. Fox officially cancelled the series on January 8, 2012.

Synopsis

The series follows Allen Gregory De Longpre (Jonah Hill), a pretentious seven-year-old being raised by his father, Richard, and his father's life partner, Jeremy, and Julie, an adopted daughter. Allen Gregory must start attending a public elementary school due to the effect of the recession on his family's finances. Richard also pressures Jeremy to secure employment due to the financial issues, although Richard avoids divulging information to Jeremy as to why they need additional income.

Allen is enamored of the school principal Judith Gottlieb, much to her disapproval. She protests but is forced to accept his behavior due to pressure from the school superintendent who is friends with Allen's father.

• Jonah Hill as Allen Gregory De Longpre. A pretentious 7 year old who is forced to attend elementary school, and has no idea how to socialize with kids his own age, and acts more like a stuck up posh adult nerd and due to being sheltered all his life, he has a very warped perception on how the world works.
• French Stewart as Richard De Longpre, Allen's father. Richard is the so called, 'Super CEO' of De Longpre International, but it turned out to be a fake title his father made up because he knows that he can't run the company and has the employees give him fake jobs to keep him busy. His views on the world are just as warped as Allen's and is always optimistic.
• Nat Faxon as Jeremy De Longpre, Richard's husband. A former social worker with a loving wife and family, until one day he got Richard as one of his clients. Richard was attracted to him to the point where he started stalking him and his family until Jeremy finally agreed to be his husband. It's been said he's a heterosexual who actually left his wife and children for Richard who offered him an easy no-maintenance life as his trophy husband. He's a nice guy and a bit of a push over, and he receives little to no respect from Allen Gregory--or Richard.
• Joy Osmanski as Julie De Longpre, Allen's adopted Cambodian sister. She is one of the only people in her family who makes any sense, and she is somewhat mistreated by Richard, mostly in a way where he doesn't notice her sometimes, and Allen Gregory for some reason finds her annoying, but she is in fact the most liked character on the show, and she doesn't let anything get to her.
• Christina Puccelli as Patrick, a student who is Allen Gregory's best friend/assistant. He is one of the only kids in the school who hangs out with Allen Gregory, and most of the time has no idea what he says or does, and whenever he says something, Allen Gregory doesn't listen, unless it plays to his ego.
• Will Forte as Superintendent Stuart Rossmyre

Supporting cast

• Renée Taylor as Principal Judith Gottlieb. The elderly principal, who for some reason Allen Gregory is in love with, has made it very clear that she is not interested in a romantic relationship with the child, but he keeps trying. She truly doesn't like Allen Gregory and once she conspired with Julie to get him expelled. She is very straight-forward and has a very serious, no-nonsense demeanor. Gottlieb is currently in a long-term romantic relationship with Sidney, the school's counselor; they live together and have recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. Sidney has made comments about getting married which she has blown off, though she has referred to their relationship as marriage to herself. She admitted to once being in Korea.
• Leslie Mann as Gina Winthrop. She is Allen Gregory's first-grade teacher who tries to teach him, but he shows no respect for her or her job and continually disrupts the class.
• Keith David as Carl Trent D'Avis aka Cole Train. An elderly African-American man whom Allen Gregory comes to when he has a problem, but doesn't always give the best advice. He has also shown violent and destructive tendencies, attacking an unsuspecting diner manager and setting a records hall on fire in the same day.
• Lacey Chabert as Beth. She is one of Julie's best friends who wears a back brace.
• Nasim Pedrad as Val. Another of Julie's best friends, of Indian descent, who is obese.
• Jake Johnson as Joel Zadak. He is the most popular kid in school, whom Allen Gregory tries so hard to impress, but he mostly likes to make fun of him.
• Will Forte as Ian, one of Allen's classmates. He is often picked on by Joel and the other students because his mom is dead.

Guest voices

• Lisa Kudrow as Sheila. Appeared in the episode, 'Mom Sizemore' where Allen thought she was his biological mother and brought her to live with him and Richard and forced Jeremy to move out. But when she started to get strict with him, he realized there was nothing wrong with Jeremy, so he got him back and she left, but in the end he found out that Carl just pulled a random file and that he still doesn't know who his real mother is.

Production

Hill co-created the series with Mogel and Paul. All three, along with Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope, serve as executive producers. David A. Goodman, who was with the series Family Guy from its 2005 return to television, until its ninth season, is also an executive producer in addition to being the showrunner. The series is a co-production of 20th Century Fox Television and Chernin Entertainment.

Fox placed an order for seven episodes in October 2010. On July 12, 2011, Fox ordered six additional scripts of the series. Although unknown if the scripts were ever finished, the scripts were never produced into episodes.

Reception

The series pilot episode attracted 4.77 million U.S. viewers; The Simpsons episode "Treehouse of Horror XXII," which aired on the same night and network, attracted 8.10 million viewers.

Critical reception

The series pilot episode has received negative to mixed reviews from critics. Chris Swanson of WhatCulture gave an episode a rating of 0.5 out of 5, stating he was "seriously disappointed" by the episode. Robert Bianco of USA Today also gave the episode a negative review, calling it "nasty and brutish," "rarely funny," and that the episode made viewers hate all the characters except for Julie. Metacritic had an overall review of 39% for the show. David Hinckley of New York Daily News was slightly more positive, giving the episode a rating of 3 out of 5.
