Papiss Demba Cissé (born 3 June 1985 in Dakar) is a Senegalese football striker who currently plays for Newcastle United and the Senegal national team. He holds the record of most goals scored by an African player in a single Bundesliga season, 22 league goals in 2010-11 season. That same season, Cissé won the EFFIFU award for being the most efficient striker in the league.

Club career

Cissé began his career with AS Génération Foot before transferring to the French side FC Metz in summer 2005.[1] After only one month during the 2005–06 season, he left Metz and was loaned to French side AS Cherbourg Football. During this season, Cissé played 26 games and scored 11 goals for the Normandie club.[2] After the season he returned to Metz for a further two years, before being loaned to French side LB Chateauroux in January 2008[3] and before returning to FC Metz in July 2008 for a third stint.

SC Freiburg

Cissé signed for Bundesliga side SC Freiburg on 28 December 2009 from FC Metz for £1,320,000 (1,600,000 euro).[4] Cissé initially became a transfer target for Freiburg in the summer of 2009 after he scored a goal and assisted on another in a 2–1 friendly win for FC Metz over Freiburg. However, a transfer fee could not be agreed upon. Hannover 96 also expressed interest in the player.[5] In his first partial season with the Black Forest club, Cissé appeared in 16 matches, scoring six goals.[6] During the 2010–11 Bundesliga season, his first full season with Freiburg, Cissé was second in the league in goals scored, only behind Mario Gómez‎ of Bayern Munich who scored 28. Cissé also set a club and league record; his 22 goals during the course of the season set the single-season goal record by an SC Freiburg player, as well as set the record for the most goals scored by an African in a single Bundesliga season. The record was previously held by Tony Yeboah who scored 20 goals with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1993.[7] That same season, Cissé won the EFFIFU award for being the most efficient striker in the league.[8]

Newcastle United

Cissé signed for Newcastle United for an estimated fee of £9 million subject to league appearances and goals. Cissé was subsequently handed the illustrious number 9 shirt,[9] joining up with fellow Senegal striker Demba Ba. On 5 February 2012, after coming on as a substitute for Leon Best, he scored a stunning strike on his debut for Newcastle at St. James' Park against Aston Villa, a left-footed half volley from just inside the area into the top corner of the net in the 71st minute, which proved to be the winner.[10] Cissé scored his second goal for the club in his third appearance against Wolves opening the scoring after just six minutes.[11]Cissé scored his third goal in five games when he scored against Norwich City in the 11th minute on 18 March 2012.[12] On 25 March 2012, he scored two first-half goals in Newcastle's 3-1 league victory at West Bromwich, but was denied a hatrick early in the second half to a good save by West Brom keeper Ben Foster.[13]
