Verplanck Colvin/Temp

Hi. Just curious if you still need the Verplanck Colvin/Temp page? It's showing up in a few categories which is distracting.  :) --Wknight94 (talk) 02:30, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, your little wikivacation message says 2005 so I'm assuming it's wrong... --Wknight94 (talk) 04:01, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Historical Photo Sources

One way of getting an old historical photo is find a book with a good print, use your trusty digital camera on it, and voila, a jpg. For example, there are only so many photos of Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Big Nose Kate, and so on. The ones I want are from about 1870, and so far as I can tell, once published somewhere in a book are fair game for the web. Is that not true? Same for photos found on the web of these historial persons. Unless somebody has added some kind of proprietary background to their jpg to identify it as being from their own site (after they stole it from somebody ELSE) what's the problem with just lifting it? Sbharris 03:59, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've re-uploaded all of the photographs you took on Pine Barrens (New Jersey) to the Wikimedia Commons under commons:Category:New Jersey Pine Barrens under "GFDL from English Wikipedia", to allow for linking with {{commonspar}} instead of a gallery on the article. æle 19:42, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question About How You Found my Website

I am Oren, the webmaster of Oren's Transit Page. You linked to my website from the Mohonk Mountain House page you contributed to, which I thank you for doing. I was curious as to how you initially found my website? As you can guess, I visit Mohonk fairly often and love it there.

Additionally, in case you were not aware of this bit of Mohonk trivia, the hold music on their phone lines is a piece called "The Mountain House," written by Jay Ungar who is best known for writing the Ashokan Farewell that is heard on Ken Burns's Civil War Documentary on PBS.

You are free to respond to this query via e-mail. My address is on my website.

Thank you,

Oren

Image Tagging for Image:James_Otis.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:James_Otis.gif. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Image copyright problem with Image:Pine Meadow Lake.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Pine Meadow Lake.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 01:39, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

has also/is also

I just wanted to tell you why I reverted your edit on the Syracuse, New York page, in order to avoid any conflict, etc. My reason was that in the present context, the sentence refers to Syracuse itself as a convention center, rather than the Civic center (convention center) specifically; I believe this was done purposefully to include the Empire Expo Center as well. Thank you. -- Gizzakk 21:01, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merging of the Alt versions of the CAFE templates

So there appears to be a plausible reason to have two forms of this template which was not taken into consideration during TfD. In light of this, I would say undo the merge. Alternatively, it is possible to have a single template with optional parameters, which might play the same role as the two former templates, but I don't know if it would require changing all existing articles that use these templates. Since you're familiar with these articles, just do what makes sense. --MarkSweep (call me collect) 19:54, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In a nutshell, you can write {{bar|}} in a template, and bar will only get substituted if it's non-blank. There are a number of esoteric templates that use this feature. The simplest template programming construct to use would be {{qif}}. For a really complicated example with lots of alternative and optional parameters, look at {{cite book}}. Let me know if you need any help. Cheers, --MarkSweep (call me collect) 20:30, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About automatic edit summaries

I've just recently started watching the helpdesk, but I bet you'd get better feedback on this (which I think is a good idea) over at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). Confusing, eh? There are almost too many disjointed places to ask questions on this site. --Kickstart70·Talk 18:03, 8 April 2006 (UTC) Hello,[reply]

External links

When you "rv spam"'d a link at Clothes free movement, you didn't make the right revert. The link is still there, just broken. I would go in and correct or remove it, but I don't want to get involved at the moment. So, FYI. — Saxifrage 14:31, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tents - Spam

I see you have removed ALL the external links from Tent. At least some of these are to non-commercial sites, and so should have remained. The ones which were to commercial sites were generally prefaced by an indication that this was the case - the main objective was to provide access to lots of pictures of different types and styles of tents. I'll watch this for your reply. Murray Langton 05:42, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted some of the links and provided better categorisation - see Talk:Tent for discussion Murray Langton 10:25, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What led me to the Tent article was what I take to be the activity of a spammer; take a look.[1]. What led me to remove ALL of the ext links was that they were all commercial retail sites, and I could see no basis for choosing one over another. There are clearly too many links, and literally hundreds could easily be added.
I think that it is fair to say that Wikipedia tries to exclude commercial links in general. You are right in saying that the links provide "lots of pictures of different types and styles of tents", but I'm not comfortable saying that that justifies a free-for-all in external links. I think, as with so many other wikipedia articles, that we should be seeking out (or producing ourselves) free images to include in articles.
Wikipedia is not a collection of links. Anyone seeking commercial tent buying info can get reams of it by googling the word "tent"-- I don't see the value of us serving as a clearinghouse of online vendors. Over the next year, I think I could easily create a dozen or more free images of tent designs, and I assume that you and others could help in that effort. With that work done, would you agree that no commercial links are needed? -- Mwanner | Talk 12:38, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, once we can get a reasonable selection of pictures and/or drawings then I would be quite happy to remove the commercial links which are selling tents etc. online. I think that the links to tent manufacturers without any online sales facility could be left for a bit longer perhaps. I don't have a digital camera but I'll keep an eye out for public-domain pictures. Murray Langton 13:22, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a couple of images that I had handy-- others will take longer to come by. -- Mwanner | Talk 12:57, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Old photographs and Art images

I know the work you're doing has to be done, and almost all of it deals with images that really have to go. But I find a smattering of pre-1923 photographs and artwork that was painted by artists who have been dead 50 or more years, that is only lacking a source (and sometimes has been mistagged). I have had a fair amount of success finding sources for such work, and restoring them to their articles. It would be easier to do before your bot does its thing than after, though, so if you notice that you're dealing with such images, could you leave me a note and give me a day or two before you pull the trigger and let me see if I can save us both some trouble? TIA, -- Mwanner | Talk 00:00, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If I see any, I'll let you know. However, the bot's work is almost entirely automated, and I don't look at more than a couple percent of the images it deals with. You'd have better luck talking to the people who do most of the tagging, such as at Wikipedia:Untagged images. --Carnildo 02:08, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"I took the liberty of creating a cropped version of your Image:Trinity_college_front_square.jpg with slightly heightened contrast. It is at Image:Trinity_college_front_square_cropped.jpg and used in College#Ireland. Hope you don't mind."

That's fine. Thanks for letting me know! --Jason (talk) 10:27, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fourteeners--spam revert

I see that you removed the Interactive map of Colorado fourteeners link from the Fourteener page. I assume that this looked like spam from a commercial site. However if you look at the site, even though it is .com, it has very little if any commercial content, and the actual link is a useful and noncommercial adjunct to the content of the Wikipedia article. So I think the link is appropriate. Comments? -- Spireguy 21:36, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed it because the guy who posted it posted it to nine different pages in 13 minutes this morning Special:Contributions/64.131.165.121. That's spamming. (It is also one of the slowest-loading pages I've ever seen.) Given that there are already six external links giving similar info (some of which probably ought to be deleted also), I don't see why we need this one. -- Mwanner | Talk 21:48, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's true that the other links provide similar info, so I don't think it's crucial to keep it. And I don't claim to be an expert in Wiki ettiquette, but I do think "spamming" is a little harsh; all of the links are relevant to their respective pages, and there is no suggestion that the links were put in for commercial gain. Is it always "spamming" if someone puts in lots of relevant external links very efficiently? I ask as a relative newcomer to WP. -- Spireguy 22:32, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The {{spam}} template reads: "Please do not add commercial links (or links to your own private websites) to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or a mere collection of external links. You are, however, encouraged to add content instead of links to the encyclopedia. See the welcome page to learn more. Thanks. "
One problem is that a lot of people want to increase the page hits on their pages, for whatever reason (including the idea of selling ads once they get some decent traffic). But the real issue is that we want good articles, not so-so articles with a dozen links to more so-so (or even good) articles, which may or may not stay available, may or may not stay good, may or may not end up larded with ads. And most of all, the article-plus-links model will not be as useful to our readers as integrating the content into one source. -- Mwanner | Talk 23:51, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

eponymous=>Wiktionary:eponymous

Almost all instances of the use of eponymous that I've seen are as vocabulary assistive links, to provide the reader with a definition for an unfamiliar word, rather than for exploration of the larger concept of eponymy. In those cases where it appears that the editor intends to provide a definition to an unfamiliar term, a link to Wiktionary is appropriate, in my opinion. User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 15:37, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I guess I'll buy that. I'm tempted, though, to add a link from the Wiktionary entry to the Wikipedia article. Any idea if any policy prohibits such a link? -- Mwanner | Talk 15:42, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging

Actually, the image you tagged {{PD-US}} about two hours ago was Image:James Calhoun of Atlanta.jpg. If the tag had been there, I wouldn't have deleted it. Angr (talkcontribs) 20:07, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality

Hi! It was nice to hear that someone shares with me this impression that most American think that universe revolves around the US, Canada being their main satellite. The Britishmen? Simply think that only momentarily universe does not revolve around the British Islands. Simply a note: the thing about specifying nationality is stated in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style guideline page. If we want to write a serious encyclopedia (apart remove articles about stupid US TV shows, but this is another matter) we should try to follow the same rules. Thanks anyway!Attilios 22:15, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay -- I remember looking for an official page in the past, but couldn't find one, so I settled for the chamber of commerce page as the next best thing. Evidently, I must have overlooked http://notl.org/. How about linking to that instead? --Qviri (talk) 14:03, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

linked date (Washington, D.C.)

In American English, dates with years have two commmas, as in September 11, 2001, was a momentous day. (copied from Comma (punctuation)). Generally, articles with topics related to US or Canada have dates written in that format (please read WP:MOSDATE#Date formats related to topics). Thanks, AndyZ t 23:27, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Low Bridge Redirect

I changed it because I am about to put it up for deletion and I don't know how yet. Currently it's a double redirect, Erie Canal Song to Low Bridge and vice versa. If you know how to fix this, please do. Thanks, Lisa Lisa 15:48, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Frame House redirect

I changed the redirect because the original version ([2]) wasn't properly formatted. The pound sign has to go before "REDIRECT" (#REDIRECT vs. REDIRECT#) for the redirect to work properly. NatusRoma | Talk 22:28, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
