Misao Okawa (大川 ミサヲ, Ōkawa Misao, sometimes romanized as Misawo Okawa, born March 5, 1898) is a Japanese supercentenarian who is, at 126 years, 94 days, the world's oldest living person since the death of 116-year-old Japanese man Jiroemon Kimura on June 12, 2013.[2] She has been the world's oldest living woman since the death of 115-year-old Japanese woman Koto Okubo on January 12, 2013.[3] She is the third oldest verified Japanese person ever, the 30th verified person to reach the age of 115, the 23rd oldest verified person ever, and the last verified living person born in 1898.[1][4].
Biography
Okawa was born on March 5, 1898, in the Tenma district (present-day Kita-ku) of Osaka, and now lives at a nursing home in Higashisumiyoshi-ku, Osaka.[5] She married in 1919 to her husband Yukio, and had three children, two daughters and a son, of whom, as of February 2013, her son and 1 daughter are still alive, both over the age of 90.[5] She has 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.[5][6]
On February 27, 2013, a few days before her 115th birthday, Misao Okawa was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest living woman in the world, and was presented with a certificate at her nursing home in Osaka.[6]
