Kunchacko Boban (born on November 2, 1977) is an Indian film actor who has starred in over 50 Malayalam films. He is the grandson of Kunchacko of the prominent Udaya Studios, and the grandnephew of Appachan of Navodaya Studio.[1]

He started his film career with the blockbuster film Aniathipravu (1997). His roles in Nakshathrathaarattu (1998), Mayilpeelikkavu (1998), and Niram (1999) made him one of the popular lead actors of the late 1990s. During the 2000s his notable films included Dhosth (2001), Swapnakoodu (2003), and Kasthooriman (2003). He was awarded the Kerala State Film Award (Special Jury) for his performance in Ee Snehatheerathu (2004).

After going through several years of decline throughout the 2000s, he made a comeback with Gulumaal (2009). The 2010s saw a resurrection of his career. He earned critical and commercial success for his performances in Elsamma Enna Aankutty (2010), Traffic (2011), Seniors (2011), Ordinary (2012), Romans(2013) and Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum(2013). making him one of the most successful leading actors of malayalam film industry.[2]

Career

(1997–2000)

He began his career as lead in Aniathipravu (1997), co-starring Shalini, and directed by Fazil.[3] He had a massive fan following after his evergreen blockbuster debut movie.[4]. The waves he created among the teenage girls can be compared to that of Shankar Panikkar during Manjil Virinja Pookkal. Once he even admitted that he got letters written with blood during this period from his lady admirers.[5]. Kunchacko Boban and Shalini gained a reputation as a star pair. They went on to work together in four films.[6] He stood out among the heroes of the late 1990s, when the middle-aged superstars concentrated on action films.[7] Following the success of Aniathipravu, Kunchacko Boban was cast in movies like Nakshathrathaarattu and Mayilpeelikkavu. In Nakshathrathaarattu, he was again cast opposite Shalini. Both films were fairly successful. Then he played a cameo in Fazil's Harikrishnans, which marked the reunion of Mohanlal and Mammootty after 9 years. Then came a streak of Chandamama, average at the bow office the he went to Ingane Oru Nilapakshi, Prem Poojari, Sahayathrikakku Snehapoorvam etc. He had a single success in 1999, Kamal's Niram, which featured him opposite Shalini for the final time. Niram was a rage among the colleges in Kerala and through this movie, he attained the title choclate hero among youngsters.[8]

(2000–2004)

Dosth did fairly well, but in an age when Dileep had the Midas touch, Kunchacko's performance was really good.[neutrality is disputed][9] After Niram, Dosth and Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka, his next hits was Kasthooriman a story of a soft-spoken and studious young man. Kunchacko's performance was really good the film became the biggest blockbusters in 2003.[10] and After Kasthooriman, his next release was Swapnakkoodu. The movie Ee Snehatheerathu fetched him a Special Jury Award at the 2004 Kerala State Film Awards. In 2005, he got married and started concentrating on real estate business as a series of his films flopped back to back. He had just one release – Kilukkam Kilukilukkam in 2006, after which he took a long hiatus from acting, spanning over two years. He returned to films in 2008 with a special appearance in a song in the multistarrer Twenty:20 and Shafi's LollyPop, starring alongside Prithviraj and Jayasurya.[11][12]

(2009–present)

In 2009, he again paired up with Jayasurya in Gulumal: The Escape. After Gulumal, which was a success in the box office, he appeared in three female centered movies in 2010 – Mummy & Me, Sakudumbam Shyamala and Lal Jose's Elsamma Enna Aankutty. All of them were profitable at the box office. Through Elsamma Enna Aankutty, he had an image makeover with the character Palunni and the movie was among the biggest hits of 2010. His first release in 2011, Traffic was a superhit,.[13] His later releases Seniors, Three Kings, Sevens and Doctor Love also did extremely well at the box office.[14][15][16] Seniors was one among the biggest hits of 2011. His success train in 2011 fetched him the Youth Icon of the Year award at the Asianet Film Awards. 2012 started off with the release of Lal Jose movie Spanish Masala, but it was just an average grosser at the box office. His next release Ordinary got extremely positive responses from the theaters and is one of the biggest blockbusters in the recent years and completed 100 days of theatre run.[17] After Ordinary, his next release was Mallu Singh, directed by Vysakh. The movie also went on to become a hit.[18] Even though the movie was not critically acclaimed, the box office success of the movie was a strong underline for Kunchacko's family support. His 2013 works include Romanswhich was directed by Boban Samuel the movie became the biggest hits of 2012. 3 Dots directed by Sugeeth the movie was not critically acclaimed, at the box office, God for Sale: Bhakthi Prasthanam This movie mainly received average reviews Vincent of Malayalam Net gave an above average rating of 3.5/5 .His later release is Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum director by Lal Jose The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, claiming the film to be more of a family entertainer it declared as blockbuster after collecting Rs 5.76 crores in its second week. It was highest grossing in the list of films it released along with.[19]

Refusal to Tamil

When Mallywood actors and actresses are making a beeline to Kollywood, Kunchako Boban is one exception to the rule. The actor recently made a startling revelation. 'I did receive plenty of offers from Tamil.[20] People like Mani Ratnam and Agathiyan offered me films. But I had refused them. Unlike other heroes, my first priority is my health and personal life.' 'I don't believe in sacrificing my health or my personal life for the sake of money or popularity. I want to spend more time with my family. I want to enjoy life. Moreover my desire is to concentrate in Malayalam movies now'.[21]

Personal life

Kunchacko was born in Alappuzha, Kerala. He is the grandson of film producer Kunchacko of the erstwhile Udaya Studios, the first film studio in Kerala. His father Boban Kunchacko was also an actor and producer who acted in a few films produced by Udaya. Boban Kunchacko later ventured into direction with the films Palattu Kunhikkannan, Sanchari and Aazhi. Kunchacko Boban is also the grandnephew of Navodaya Appachan of the Navodaya Studios. Kunchako Boban married Priya Ann Samuel on April 2, 2005.

Acting style and analysis

Kunchacko Boban has been praised by contemporaries and commentators for his acting skills and devotion to his work.[22] Lal Jose described Kunchacko Boban as a "natural" explaining that he had "a rawness in him" and "a crowd appeal, even when he was just with friends."[23] He is also known to committing heavily to each role and doing monumental research for his characters.[24][25] He can give a role much more than what you can dream of. He can do anything and be anyone. Also, what really makes him stand apart is the fact that he goes by the tonality of the character. He is somebody who has no boundaries. On the other hand, he has also been criticized by some film critics for his "trademark" overacting[26]

During the span of his career, he has played an array, of roles from various film genres; romantic dramas, comedies, horrors, sport films and period films films.[27] Following the success of Elsamma Enna Aankutty, his film roles were subject to wide critical analysis. He also added: "Welcome to a new-look Mollywood. Today, it stands virtually transformed by his single-handedly into an entity that caters to Family's desire to see their superstar reflect their own weaknesses, pain and anguish.[28] The actor is contemplating limiting the number of his projects this year. "I am planning to cut down the number to five and choose only the cream of films that come my way," he says.[29]
