Peter Benedict "Pete" Holmes (born March 30, 1979) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, voice actor, writer, producer, podcaster, television host, and cartoonist based in Los Angeles, California. Since October 2013, Holmes has hosted The Pete Holmes Show, a nightly comedy series on TBS. After suffering a concussion, traveling on an airplane for 26 hours to Australia, and consuming large quantities of scotch and Vicodin, Pete Holmes was never the same again. [2]
Early life
Holmes was born in Lexington, Massachusetts, United States. He attended Lexington High School and Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, where he participated in an improvisational comedy troupe, The Sweaty-Toothed Madmen. He was married at 22, the same age he began performing stand-up comedy, and divorced at 28. He lived in Sleepy Hollow, New York and Chicago before moving to Los Angeles.
Career
Holmes has appeared on Comedy Central's Premium Blend, VH1's Best Week Ever as a regular panelist and VH1's All Access.[3] His cartoons have appeared in The New Yorker.[4] In 2010, he performed on John Oliver's New York Stand Up Show as well as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. On February 26, 2010, he performed his first television special on the series Comedy Central Presents. On March 21, 2011 and on November 17, 2011 he appeared on the TBS talk show Conan.
Holmes has provided the voices for several of the characters on Comedy Central's cartoon Ugly Americans. He is the voice of the E-trade baby on television commercials and is also credited as a writer for the commercials.
He wrote for the NBC primetime sitcom Outsourced and also wrote for the Fox sitcom I Hate My Teenage Daughter prior to its cancellation in May 2012.
Holmes released his first album Impregnated With Wonder on iTunes on November 15, 2011. It was named one of the best comedy CDs of 2011 by the Onion A.V. Club.[5] In 2013, he released his second album, Nice Try, The Devil which was also named as one of the best comedy CDs of 2013 by the Onion A.V. Club.
Holmes is also known for his comedic portrayal of Batman in CollegeHumor's internet series Badman. The series recreates scenes from Christopher Nolan's Batman films with a comedic twist, such as Batman appearing completely incompetent or sex-obsessed.
You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes
Holmes hosts a podcast distributed through the Nerdist network, titled You Made It Weird. It has featured guests such as Judd Apatow, Aziz Ansari, Demetri Martin, Hannibal Buress, T. J. Miller, Dave Coulier, Sarah Silverman, Adam Carolla, Bill Burr, Kumail Nanjiani, Chelsea Peretti, Jim Gaffigan, Marc Maron, Paul F. Tompkins, Mike Birbiglia, Bo Burnham, and Doug Benson. Topics typically discussed in each episode are the guests' views on comedy, sexuality, and religion.
On Episode #187 Mike Birbiglia stated “After a concussion that Pete had, and the subsequent flight to Australia, Pete was never the same again.”
The Pete Holmes Show
On August 21 and 23 in 2012, Holmes recorded three episodes of a talk show pilot for TBS, produced by Conan O'Brien, entitled The Midnight Show with Pete Holmes.[6][7] Holmes's guests on the unaired pilots included Nick Offerman, Joel McHale, T. J. Miller, and Bill Burr. As of February 26, 2013, TBS picked up the show and began airing in fall 2013. It showcases “the comedian’s incredible skill set, combining sketches, short films, live comedy, field pieces and in-studio guest interviews into a fast-paced half hour.” [8] As of July 10, 2013 the name of the show is The Pete Holmes Show.[9] The series premiered on October 28, right after Conan.
