The Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Awards (named after the medieval falchion weapon) are a literary award to honor the best books that contain elements of mystery, thriller, or suspense readily available to a North American audience published in any format (print or e-book) during the past year as voted upon by literary peers.[1] The prize is a Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award emblem stating the Killer Nashville year of receipt.[2] There is no fee to enter.[3] The Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award was established in 2008 by the Killer Nashville Writers' Conference.[4]
The best books are nominated by publisher, authors, agents, editors, and publicists during an open nomination period, then nominated only by publishers during the publishers-only period, then vetted by a nominating committee of judges, and finally voted upon annually by attendees[5] of the Killer Nashville Writers' Conference founded in 2006[6] and held in August of each year in Nashville, Tennessee.[7] The winner is announced at the International Killer Nashville Writers' Conference Guest of Honor Dinner & Awards Presentation.[8]
The award is given in nine main categories: Best Novel (which includes novellas), Best First Novel, Best Young Adult Novel, Best Children's, Best Young Readers, Best Preschool, Best Anthology or Collection, Best Nonfiction, and Best Book by a Conference Attendee. Books may be from traditionally-published or self-published authors. Sometimes categories will be open to honor an exceptional work, such as poetry. Prior to 2014, only one award was given and nominees could only be attendees of the Killer Nashville Writers' Conference.[9]
For the sake of fair competition, in years when there is a surplus of merit-worthy submissions, subcategories may comprise horror, literary, mystery (crime fiction / cozy / amateur sleuth / hardboiled / detective / reporter / historical / legal / police procedural), romantic suspense, sci-fi / fantasy, thriller, adventure, biography / autobiography, business / productivity, promotion / publicity, research, forensics, industry study, writing / publishing how-to, and poetry relating specifically to writers, writing in general, mystery/thriller/suspense writing specifically, and the fields of crime fiction / adventure fiction, thriller fiction, and / or true crime, nonfiction.[10]
In the judges' determination of an absence of quality of books during a particular year, certain categories or subcategories may also be eliminated an no award will be given for that category.[11]
