Not the most viewed sporting event

From the data the latest superbowl the total viewer ship was 111 million compared to 109 for uefa championship.

Picture of girls with trophy

I see no need for this picture. The trophy in the photo is out of focus and is only a small part of the photo - the girls appear to have have made themselves more the subject of the photo but that is not what this wiki page is about, posting on FLickr etc is more suitable.

The picture of the trophy at the top of the page is of MUCH better quality therefore the page itself has lost nothing of value by the change.

the above is an anonymous edit

You may be right, but having regard to the trouble we went to in order to access the FC Barca trophy room, then ... Izzy (talk) 16:08, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Izzy, with respect, the page is not about the security of the Barcelona trophy room. As you state, the trophy is merely a replica, copies of which are also on display at Old Trafford, Anfield, Parkhead, the Bernabéu etc etc (see links 1-3 below). I feel the inclusion of the picture is more about satisfying your ego rather than the quality/relevance of the page - I say that without meaning any personal offence whatsoever. Posting on flickr with the appropriate tags will get you a LOT of views I'm sure.

I take your point. By the way, I inserted the image in good faith assuming that the trophy we were holding was the actual Champions Cup. That is what we were told at the time. I have only now been informed that we were holding a replica. Izzy (talk) 09:58, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Spain and UEFA Chanpions League sponsors

Should Spain be added to list of countries with sponsorship restrictions? At the Santiago Bernabéu today I saw all of the Heineken adboards were replaced with "Star Experience" and Sevilla for some reason are forced to strip their sponsors 188bet.com from their shirts and replace them with UEFA Respect logos during UEFA Chanpions League matches.

Single team federation victory

The article is not clear on what happens in qualification if a team from a league with only one place in the Champions League wins the title but not its league. Would they just displace the league winners? Lenzar (talk) 19:29, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I need an answer for this

In the Copa Libertadores section, we are discussing how would we rate the "prestigue" of winning the old Intercontinental Cup/Club World Cup. Some clubs in South America care deeply for the tournament (Boca Juniors, Internacional, Flamengo, etc); others simply could give a squat about it (Estudiantes, Sao Paulo, River Plate, etc).

I would like to get opinions from Europeans as to how they view this competition. Jamen Somasu (talk) 18:59, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In England, I don't think anyone really cares. The Club World Cup is just another couple of matches in an already crowded fixture schedule. And it takes two seasons to qualify for. It's treated as a bit of a novelty, tbh. – PeeJay 19:15, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It doesnt take 2 seasons to qualify, its Champions League winner who get to Club World Cup. But noone really cares because European are much superior than other continent teams, might sound bit too egoistic but thats the case (DJSurvivor (talk) 08:17, 1 October 2012 (UTC)).[reply]

It does take two seasons to qualify. You have to qualify for the Champions League in season 1, then win the Champions League in season 2. That's two seasons. – PeeJay 11:05, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but to qualify to Club World Cup it depends if you win Champions League during previous season...it doesnt matter how you finish at the domestic league...you might even qualify without getting Champions League spot at domestic league...this could be done if you win Champions League and hence qualify to Champions League 2nd season and then win it again, so hence domestic league doesnt count I say it takes 1 season to qualify...but that could be my perspective. (DJSurvivor (talk) 06:44, 7 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

No, you're wrong. It always takes at least two seasons to qualify for the Club World Cup, because you have to qualify for the Champions League first in order to win it the following season. It doesn't matter how you qualify, whether that's through the domestic league or winning the CL, but it still takes two years at the very least to reach the Club World Cup. – PeeJay 11:19, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have proposed, with strong reason, to merge the list into this article. Although I used the "merging" template, it is more than obvious that the merge has already been complete and we currently have two articles that carries the same, exact information. Jamen Somasu (talk) 02:02, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Given my previous interactions with this editor, I was unsure whether there would be a lot in this. But he's right. The tables here are an exact duplication of the list, and the prose there is merely a condensed version of the prose here. WFC (talk) 12:39, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The template {{UEFA Champions League winners by club}} was added to this article only a couple of months ago by an occasional editor. I'm not sure exactly what it was supposed to transclude, but at the moment, since it was redirected to a section of the winners' list, it seems to bring in the whole of that list. Which is why the contents are exactly the same. I've left a note with Rambo's Revenge, who changed that template to a redirect, but I don't suppose he's had a chance to look at it yet. Perhaps it would be best to wait until the peculiar transclusion is fixed and see what's in this article then. And if it's still the same content as the list, take this article back to its pre-May 2010 state by removing the template or its contents. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:03, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Struway2, a little bit of research goes a long way. I suggest the transclusion is removed and we leave the list as it stands, with any obvious issues with current FL criteria fixed. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:06, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing as there was no objections, I took the transclusion out of the parent article, making the list viable to keep. Jamen Somasu (talk) 14:40, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My sincere apologies. I was too hasty and did not check thoroughly enough. I've rectified other occurances of my mistake. Now everything is as was, except the information is directly in the article not transcluding from templates. It is now how it was before any changes were made. However, I'm not sure the "May 2010 edit" (discussed above) was beneficial (a possible CFORK?) and perhaps that information (which is now directly in this article following substitution) should be removed altogether. First European Cup/Champions League final with a foreign starting eleven

(cross posted from the 2011 final article talk page, to which it refers)

This info was completely removed for being 'unsourced' [1]. The fact there were no Italians in Inter's starting lineup was obviously simply true, and I'm pretty sure this being a 'first' in the history of the competition is also pretty indisputable. A citation needed tag would have sufficed for both of these facts. This was found in a few minutes to support the obvious fact, and while I can't find a more reliable source than this in the few minutes I have available now, I'd be amazed if one doesn't exist. If someone with more time finds a better source, it really should be restored. MickMacNee (talk) 20:36, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UEFA Champions Leagu revamp

See the Copa Libertadores page. I pretty much made it into a GA single-handedly. I am now planning on transforming the UEFA Champions League page the same way. I only have a feew thins I could need help on.

On the history section, I plan on separating the decades as such:

1956-1965: Beginnings 1966-1975: The birth of total football 1976-1985: English dominance 1986-1995: Renaissance 1996-2005: G14 dominance

Plus, some info or sites of the cultural impact of the tournament in Europe would help.

What does everyone think? 184.37.251.225 (talk) 15:49, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Go ahead and do so, you can put it on your sandbox before applying it so we can see how it looks.

I would be wary of this suggestion. The user claims to have revamped the Copa Libertadores page singlehandedly, but their only edit has been to this page! Have they been working under a different name, perhaps as a registered user? – PeeJay 18:07, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UEFA champion doesn't qualify for the World Cup

It says in the article that the winner qualifies for the World Cup. That doesn't even make since. Every club in the league has players from different countries. Silly wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.215.63.237 (talk) 03:00, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It says FIFA Club World Cup. nothing wrong with that.
  – HonorTheKing (talk) 04:08, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This section is very difficult to follow, as it implies that just ten teams (5+5) make it into the first round. Presumably what's missing is that 22 teams don't need to play qualifying matches? --Dweller (talk) 13:49, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Country flags and names

In this article there seems to be a HUGE double standard which pertains to the flags and country names next to particular teams. In the case of Red Star Belgrade and Partizan Belgrade a Yugoslavian flag is used. Why? It is a fair point to say that during the time of their champions league successes those teams were representing Yugoslavia but if the rule is that the flag pertains to the year in which they won shouldn't Bayern Munich/Frankfurt/Hamburg have a west Germany flag and under "by nation" shouldn't it say 3 wins for West Germany. Same thing for Steaua Bucharest which would have the flag of Socialist Republic of Romania. Obviously this is ridiculous. Therefore the flag of a team should be the one they currently represent. That's why I believe that for Red Star and Partizan should say Serbia not Yugoslavia. --Branis1av77 (talk) 19:37, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

While I agree with you, I believe the reason for this double standard is that the Serbian and Romanian clubs haven't been in the final after the "country split". But I guess that would be the same case for one or two of the West German teams. Mentoz86 (talk) 18:50, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Splitting up e.g. Bayern Munich into two teams under the records section makes no sense, it's only one club. For the country section, why not say totals include west germany too. -Koppapa (talk) 12:49, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

@Menotz86 Thank you for your support. I think it's interesting that all the people who constantly edit war and who are on the other side of this issue are too afraid to debate with me openly on this talk page.

@Koppapa I think that's a great idea for Bayern Munich and Dortmund, but what would you suggest we do for Hamburg, Franckfurt, and Monchengladbach (teams that haven't won any CLs since unification)? Also how would that work for Steaua Bucharest?

On a side note I just wanted to add credit to my argument. According to FIFA and UEFA Serbia is the direct descendant of all records and trophies won under Yugoslavia. In fact on the uefa champions league official website under "SERBIA" it says one champions league victory. Here is the link: http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/association=srb/honours/index.html --Branis1av77 (talk) 15:06, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to reinforce Branislav`s point of view due to analysis of following criteria; Criteria of nations continuity - To the same extent to which Germany claims continuity with Western Germany, Serbia is entitled to claim continuity with Yugoslavia since footballing criteria depends on footballing governing bodies namely Football associations - German F.A. today is same as it was in past and Serbian F.A. is actually only renamed Yugoslav F.A. that is FIFA affiliated since 1921 (much before Serbia ever existed). If on the contrary we choose to ignore "footballing World Map" (governed by FIFA) and abide strictly by "political World Map" (governed by UN) - then there is no place even for England or Scotland and we must list only UK. To further extend nonsense of maintaing YUG instead of SRB consider the fact that both Red Star and Partizan are and have always been clubs based in Belgrade - Serbian capital, also Munich was always in what is now unified Germany. So please, let us all leave our bias aside and let`s agree on one of the following - maintain consistent list with UK, FRG and YUG or the one with ENG, SCO, GER and SRB. 94.203.115.237 (talk) 22:16, 18 July 2012 (UTC) 94.203.115.237 (talkcontribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic. GAZPROM new sponsor

On 9 July 2012, Gazprom confirmed that they will be the sponsor of UCL and SuperCup for three years from 2012-13 season until 2015 [2].

All UEFA competitions have had (or will have) the 'UEFA' portion of their logos changed according to the new UEFA logo that was introduced several weeks ago. Now 'UEFA' should have a different font instead of the previous font they've been using for the competitions for umpteen years now. 69.255.19.141 (talk) 02:37, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Goalscorers

The two tables of goalscorers incorrectly attribute Raul's goals to his time in Madrid. From what I can tell, he scored 5 of his 71 with Schalke 04 in 2010–11, but I haven't looked to see in which rounds they occurred. It might be a few days before I can get around to sorting it out, so feel to make this edit if you are interested. Slow Graffiti (talk) 00:25, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Football/Association football

Please bear with me here, I do not want to unduly upset anyone so I didn't just change this unilaterally. I have no problem with this page using "football" for the game that I have always known as "soccer" in the body of the article. However, I feel that the first mention of the game should display as "association football" just as the first mention of the game on the Super Bowl page displays as "American football". This would match the style used for the pages for the sports themselves as well. --Khajidha (talk) 13:48, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Five teams each?

I do not think it is fair to say that top leagues provide up to 5 teams each. Only in 2005-06 England provided 5 and it was a one off thing. I suggest it is turned to 4.

No, it's correct. In May 2013 UEFA changed the rules. The Europa league winners will now qualify for the following season's Champions league. That country gets an extra place in the Champs league, even if it is Germany, Spain or England. UEFA explicitly say this here: "As an effect of the UEFA Europa League winners qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, the current limit of a maximum four teams per association will be increased to five." Valenciano (talk) 16:01, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But isn't that starting at 2015? QED237 (talk) 16:09, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fair point. I've reworded to explicitly state that. Valenciano (talk) 17:54, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong country flag for Atletico de Madrid i

Dear admin,

I noticed that in the table: Winning clubs - Main article: List of European Cup and UEFA Champions League finals there is a mistake on the country flag used for Atletico de Madrid. It somehow resembles the flag used during Franco's regime and needs to be changed to the flag used in the other Spanish teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid or Valencia for example. Best regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.42.252.4 (talk) 13:16, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Media Coverage

The article states "The competition attracts an extensive television audience, not just in Europe, but throughout the world. The final of the tournament has been, in recent years, the most-watched annual sporting event in the world. With an estimated audience of 109 million people" but the average Formula1 race dwarfs these figures with a global viewing figure pre race being around 305 million people and as high as 507 million for some races. These races are annual and thus are the most watched sporting events, not the champions league or the superbowl. 77.97.151.145 (talk) 00:09, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is prize money cumulative or either-or?

Does the winner get just the 10.5 million, or does they get the 10.5 million, plus the 4.9 for having gotten into the semis, plus...? I'd like to make this clearer in the article, but I want to be sure first: UEFA_Champions_League#Prize_money Gronky (talk) 16:34, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

anthem section

There reads: The anthem has never been released commercially in its original version.
Strangely, the separate article has this: The anthem has been released commercially in its original version on iTunes with the title of Champions League Theme.
Which one is true? 82.141.126.28 (talk) 18:49, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Versions of the anthem have been released commercially, but the one(s) on iTunes are not official or sanctioned by UEFA. The person(s) who uploaded the tracks to iTunes and receive money when it is/they are downloaded are third party individuals. So the info on the UEFA Champions League anthem page is technically wrong. – PeeJay 19:44, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
