Julian Wesley Green (born 6 June 1995) is an American professional football player who plays as a winger for German Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and the United States national soccer team. Prior to his senior international appearance, Green played internationally for the German and American youth teams due to having dual citizenship.

Club career

On 8 November 2013, Green signed a professional contract with Bayern Munich to stay at the club until 2017.[2] Green made his professional debut on 27 November 2013, coming on in the 88th minute of a UEFA Champions League game against CSKA Moscow as a substitute for Mario Götze.[3][4] He was named in Bayern's squad for the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup, as a late replacement for the injured Arjen Robben.[5]

International career

Green was born in Tampa, Florida, United States to an American father and German mother; his family moved to Germany when he was two years old.[6] Eligible to play for either the United States or German national teams, he was sought after by both federations.

His international career began with Germany U16s and U17s. In September 2012, Green represented the United States at the U18 level in an international friendly with Netherlands, scoring in a 4–2 victory.[7]

Green has represented Germany at the U19 level and featured in the qualifying round of the 2014 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.[8]

Green was called up to the United States senior team by head coach Jürgen Klinsmann for friendlies in November 2013, but he declined the call due to being ineligible to play unless a one-time switch – allowed for players with dual nationalities - was filed, something he said he was not ready to do. Instead he joined the German U19 team for a friendly against France.[9][10] He trained with the United States ahead of their match against Ukraine on 5 March 2014.[11] Green filed for a one-time switch to play for the United States on 18 March 2014.[12] Explaining his decision to play for the U.S., Green said, "I was born in Florida and my father still lives there, so I have deep roots in the U.S. I'm very proud to be representing the United States."[13]

On 24 March 2014, FIFA approved Green's change of nationality, making him eligible to play in games for the United States with immediate effect.[14] On 26 March 2014, Green received his first call up for the senior national team for the friendly in April against Mexico.[15] Green made his debut for the United States in the second half.[16]

On 12 May 2014, Green was officially selected as a part of the United States men's national team to train for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and was named to the final 23-man squad on 22 May.[17][18]
