The Champions Tennis League is a tennis championship league to be held in November 2014, and will be held across six Indian cities: Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Chandigarh.[1] This first edition of Champions Tennis League has been scheduled to be played from 17 to 26 November 2014.[2] The tournament is the brainchild of retired professional tennis player Vijay Amritraj and is styled on the (cricket) Indian Premier League. The 10 day tennis exhibition tournament will be aired live on Sony SIX, the channel which also holds the broadcast rights for Indian Premier League. [3]
Background
Promoted by Amritraj's sports management company Second Serve, the CTL will feature six teams, one each from Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The promoter announced five of the six team owners at the launch event of the league held in Mumbai. Mittu Chandilya, chief executive of Air Asia, has come on board as the owner of the Bengaluru franchise and Gurpreet Singh Kiki as the owner of Chandigarh team.
Format
CTL will have 13 matches played over the 10-day period, with the teams structured into two groups, each having three teams, where all teams play each other. The teams with the highest number of games (not sets) won in their respective group, will play each other in the grand finale to win prize money of Rs 1 crore. The runner-up will get Rs 50 lakh.
Each team will play the other two teams on a home and away basis to decide the group standings. The top team of each group will then face each other in the final.
The player draft was conducted without any auction with each team picking four players from a pool of 24. The player pool consisted of six legends, six international men, six international women and six Indians.[4]
