Hotaru Tomoe (土萠ほたる, Tomoe Hotaru) is a fictional character in the Japanese manga and anime Sailor Moon. She is the only Sailor Senshi whose name was not actually modified in the English dub; although some fans cited an oft held rumor, it was because she debuted as an apparently evil character. In the Mixx (now TOKYOPOP) manga, she was once named Jenny; Mixx later admitted this was a mistake and changed her name back to "Hotaru". She is also notable for carrying a scythe called the Silence Glaive. The Glaive has the power to bring about the cataclysmic destruction of the world.
Personality
Adding to the mystery, her violet-clad, Sailor Saturn persona is also rarely seen in the series, and she has no proper henshin sequence. The henshin sequence most commonly associated with her actually only appeared in a Sailor Moon video game.
She lives with her demon-possessed father (who is depicted as genuinely malevolent in the manga) while her mother is deceased. Hotaru is known for her extreme shyness, and weak constitution. She is also known for occasional abnormal body growth after her (supposed) temporary death, which makes her actual age irrelevant. She is usually depicted as younger than the current run of typical senshi.
In the manga, the threat of Saturn actually doing damage is more overtly implied and she is frequently cited as able to destroy the world (and in fact destroyed the leftovers of the ruined Silver Millennium kingdom). Based on this somewhat disturbing information the "Outer Senshi", who are only somewhat aware of her reawakening, consequently make it part of their mission to 'deal' with her, causing the initial friction between them and Sailor Moon, who resolutely believes Hotaru can be saved.
The anime is slightly vaguer in its allusions, largely due to the darker aspects of Hotaru's personality being affected by an evil entity. Sailor Saturn herself (who unlike other senshi, often is depicted as a completely different aspect) describes the position as hametsu to tanjo no senshi which has been translated as "senshi of death and rebirth" or "senshi of ruin and birth".
Some fans will argue that the Senshi is more regularly referred to as the 'Senshi of Silence' than the 'Senshi of Death and Rebirth' because her powers have hardly any relation to rebirth. In the manga, when Sailor Saturn brings down her Silence Glaive, it is up to Super Sailor Moon to bring about the rebirth of the world that Sailor Saturn silenced.
Hotaru herself dresses predominantly in black and much art of her features a superficial gothic style. In the manga this was explained as disguising the extensive prostethics her father implanted to keep her alive. They later disappear after her rebirth but she (or the manga) seems to have kept the habit.
She also enjoys poetry and collecting lamps ("hotaru" means firefly in Japanese). After her father's death in the manga (the anime is somewhat contradictory about later aspects) she essentially becomes the adopted daughter of Haruka Tenoh and Michiru Kaioh.
Because of her rather ignoble and sympathetic treatment in the series, Hotaru has few detractors in fandom, though ironically her best friend (her occasional girlfriend in certain yuri fanfics and doujinshi) is Chibiusa, one of the most disliked characters in the show's American fandom.
Note on the Moon Kingdom
It must be noted that while the other senshi (soldiers) had a life during the time of the Moon Kingdom, Saturn did not. Her coming had always been prevented by the outer senshi (Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto) in addition to their duty of being the first line of defense for the solar system. It was thought that allowing her to come into existence would mean the destruction of their worlds. So was predicted- and so came true. Saturn always says, "With the end comes hope and rebirth." When the moon kingom was attacked, Queen Serenity did send her daughter, Princess Serenity, her lover Endymion and all of the Princess's gaurds (also the princess of the inner solar system) to be reborn on earth. This did not occur for the outer senshi though, seeing as doing this and sealing the Silver Millenium crystal within Princess Serenity killed Queen Serenity immediately after. The outer senshi were left in their grief, when Saturn arrived from her sleep. Dropping her Silence Glaive, she killed the senshi so they were reborn on earth. Unlike the Princess and her court, the outer senshi (in the manga it was suggested) were reborn on earth as adults, with the knowledge of Sailor Saturn and the terrible powers she had. She also has a hand in on the new moon kingdom known as Crystal Tokyo. As the world is destroyed by Pharoh 90 in the final battle, Sailor Saturn ends the world a second time, sealing Pharoh 90 and herself. With the end of her and the enemy's life, she leaves the world to be revived by Super Sailormoon (who transforms into Neo Queen Serenity) and Saturn is reborn as a small child.

Powers
Hotaru differs from most other Senshi (Mars and Neptune being obvious exceptions), in that she has several powers outside of her Senshi form. Some of these powers may be attributed to the influence of Mistress 9 posessing her body. However many of these powers take place after Mistress 9 has been destroyed, or show Hotaru using the power while the Saturn symbol shines on her forehead (indictating that the power is that of Hotaru/Saturn).
- Energy Barrier - At various times in the anime, Hotaru is protected from harm by a barrier of energy. This barrier severely damages the enemy. This barrier appears to be involuntary.
- Energy Beams - At various times in Sailor Moon S, Hotaru uses her power to damage or paralyze enemies.
- Healing - In both the anime and manga, Hotaru has the ability to heal wounds. This power was never explored in-depth, and the wounds being healed were always shown to be fairly minor.
- Rebirth - It appears that Hotaru has the ability to be reborn when defeated. It is unknown as to what the extent of this power is. In conjunction with her rebirth, Hotaru also ages rapidly. In both the anime and manga, she is shown to reach her former age in a matter of days.
- Power-Ups - In both the manga and anime, Hotaru is the one to power up the Outer Senshi into their 'super' forms.
- Visions & Projections - Hotaru often has visions of upcoming events. She also has the ability to project visions to others. She does this several times in the Dream arc of the manga and in the Sailor Stars anime. Notable occurrences involve showing a defeated Pegasus in the Dream arc of the manga, and a projection of the Universe being invaded in Sailor Stars.
- Rebirth by death- Sailor Saturn, scout of destruction, has the ability to end all life as known. With the death, she brings hope in rebirth. This is demonstrated when she kills the outer senshi and the silver millenium as well as 'sealing away' herself and Pharoh 90 to allow the earth and herself to be reborn.
Senshi powers
Transformations
- Saturn Crystal Power, Make-Up! - (Manga only) Used to transform into Sailor Saturn.
Powers
- Death Reborn Revolution - (Manga only) This forbidden power was used to drain the energy from Pharaoh 90. The kanji used with this maneuver means 'death world change' but the furigana shows that it should be spoken as Death Reborn Revolution. Only used in the manga. It is occasionally (incorrectly) romanized as "Death Ribbon Revolution," due to the attack resembling hundreds of black ribbons. What happens is that she says "Death Reborn Revolution" and then drops the Silence Glaive. As it falls it brings with it the end of the world. But as she destroys the world, it is also reborn, but at a cost, Sailor Saturn's life. However, she is reborn as an infant bearing the symbol of Saturn on her forehead.
- Bring Ruin to the World - Sailor Saturn brings down her Silence Glaive. There is no incantation for this maneuver.
- Silence Wall - Sailor Saturn creates a barrier to protect her allies and neutralize attacks.
- Silent Wall - The same attack as Silence Wall, with a shorter range. This attack is only used in the anime. What happens is that a wall of black ribbons, her power, goes up around her from her glaive, protecting whatever is behind her. This is a powerful shield but can drain her after some time.
- Silence Glaive Surprise - An attack seen in the manga which resembles Sailor Mercury's Shabon Spray. A technique with the same name is nearly used in the Sailor Stars anime against Nehellenia that has a double-edge effect as it will also take Sailor Saturn's life once she uses it. Super Sailor Chibimoon asked Saturn to not use this attack. However, what happens is that all becomes silent around her before the attack is sent. It is shaped as an orb and is very powerful.
- Galactica Glaive Surprise - Sailor Saturn used this attack while under the control of Sailor Galaxia in the manga.
- Galactica Cannon - In the manga, Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn use this attack against Sailor Moon when they are controlled by Sailor Galaxia.
