Sonic Runners (ソニック・ランナーズ, Sonikku Rannāzu) is a mobile video game for iOS and Android[1] in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, announced by publisher Sega on December 28, 2014.[2][3][4][5][6] It is the first mobile game in the series developed by Sonic Team. The game was initially released as a test launch in Japan and Canada on February 25, 2015.[7]

Gameplay

Development

In February 2014, a poster hosted at a German toy fair announced a 2015 Sonic game for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U, as well as the Sonic Boom series and games, a feature film, and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.[8] This information circulated on the Internet, especially concerning the unannounced Sonic game, but Sega quickly asserted that the information on the supposed new title was false.[5] Later in 2014, however, rumors of a smartphone game titled Sonic Runners began to circulate online;[3] Sega had registered the domain name sonicrunners.com in July of that year.[9] Eventually, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka confirmed these rumors at a Sega event called "Sonic Fan Thanksgiving" in Tokyo.[3]

A small teaser and more details about the game were revealed in early February 2015. The gameplay is described as a 2D side-scrolling that utilizes the touchscreen.[10] Composer Tomoya Ohtani also announced on Twitter that he composed the musical score for the game.[11] It is also free, but supported by in-app purchases.[10][12] Released in February 2015, it is available for iOS and Android devices.

Pre-release reception

Upon the game's announcement, Thomas Whitehead of NintendoLife voiced disappointment at Runners not being a Wii U title.[3] Similarly, Tatiana Morris from GameZone hoped that it would not be the only Sonic game of the year, instead wishing for a console game similar to Sonic the Hedgehog or Sonic Adventure.[13] Destructoid staff writer Brett Makedonski opined that while "it's tough to imagine Sonic fans getting too excited about Runners", its future augured well after the critical panning of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.[2]
