Małgorzata Jamroży (born 30 June 1991), known by her stage name Margaret, is a Polish singer and fashion designer.[2]
In 2013 her debut single "Thank You Very Much" was released in Poland and other European countries.[3] It peaked at number 38 in Austria, 41 in Germany and 22 in Italy. Her debut studio album, Add the Blonde, was released in Poland on August 26, 2014 where it peaked at number 8 and was certified Platinium.[4] It featured top-10 hits "Wasted" and "Start a Fire" as well as a top-15 single "Heartbeat", all released in Poland only.
In 2015, Margaret recorded a collaborative jazz album with Matt Dusk titled Just the Two of Us which was released in Poland on November 6.[5] That same year she won MTV Europe Music Award for Best Polish Act.
Career
Career beginnings
Margaret's career began during her senior year, as a singer-songwriter of the band oNieboLepiej (Template:Lang-en), created in early January 2009.[6] In the same year, Margaret won the 254th episode of Polish reality-singing competition show Szansa na sukces (trans. Chance for Success), where she sang "Znam Cię na pamięć", originally by Monika Brodka, and performed during the main annual concert at the Congress Hall in Warsaw.[7] In 2010, she starred in the musical Rent at the Szczecin Opera in the Castle.[8] Margaret had also been a singer-songwriter of the Gosia Jamroży Project (also known as the Margaret J. Project), a band she co-created, and with which she performed at the semi-finals of the Coke Live Fresh Noise 2010.[9]
2012–2013: "Thank You Very Much" and All I Need
Margaret collaborated with the award-winning director Chris Piliero (who regularly collaborates with The Black Keys, Britney Spears, and Ke$ha) to create a controversial music video for her debut single, "Thank You Very Much", in which she was surrounded by thirty naked extras.[10] The video was banned from YouTube, however, it was later restored on her official channel. With this work, Margaret aimed to propose rights for nudity under the slogan "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity".[11] She defended her position by saying that "even though YouTube, considered one of the leading defenders for freedom of speech of the 21st century, censored the video, I'm happy that my fans are able to understand it in another way."[11] The song was released for digital download on February 21, 2013, and listed at number two on the Polish Airplay Chart.[12] The single also has reached number 41 on Media Control Charts in Germany, number 38 on Ö3 Austria Top 40 and number 22 on Singles Chart in Italy.[13][14][15] She, among others, performed "Thank You Very Much" during "Trendy" concert at the 2012 Sopot TOPtrendy Festival in Forest Opera,[16] "Największe Przeboje Roku" (trans. Biggest Hits of the Year) concert at the 2013 Sopot TOPtrendy Festival[17] and in popular German show, the ZDF Fernsehgarten, broadcasting live by ZDF.[18]
On July 4, 2013, Margaret's second single, "Tell Me How Are Ya", premiered exclusively on Radio Eska, and was released for digital download on July 9.[19] In the Summer 2013, she also performed "Thank You Very Much" during a televised concert organized by Radio ZET and TVP2 in Słubice.[20]
In late July, Margaret was chosen to represent Poland at the Baltic Song Contest 2013 in Sweden,[21] where she sang "Thank You Very Much" and "I Get Along", taking second place.[22] On July 30, 2013, her EP All I Need was released, debuting at number 50 on the OLiS chart.[23] In late August, she performed at the Stars for Free 2013 concert in Berlin, organized by German radio station, RTL Radio.[24]
Margaret was nominated in several categories at the Eska Music Awards 2013, including Best Artist, Best Hit (for "Thank You Very Much"), Best Music Video ("Thank You Very Much"), and Best Debut, winning an award for Best Music Video.[25][26] Margaret was nominated for Best Polish Act at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards.[27]
2014–present: Add the Blonde and Just the Two of Us
On December 31, Margaret premiered "Wasted" with the live performance of the song, at the "Sylwestrowa Moc Przebojów" (trans. New Year's Eve Power of Hits) concert in Gdynia, Poland.[28] On January 15, 2014 the song was released for digital download in Poland and served as the lead single from her debut studio album.[29] The day before, orange.pl kicked off the premiere of the music video for the song, directed by Julia Bui Ngoc.[30] The single peaked at number 6 on the Polish Airplay Chart.[31]
In the summer, Margaret collaborated with Thomas Karlsson and Mats Tärnfors, to create the official song of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship in Poland.[32][33] "Start a Fire" was performed by Margaret at the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Opening Ceremony on August 30 in front of 62,000 spectators in National Stadium, Warsaw, prior to the Poland v. Serbia match. The event was broadcast in over 168 countries.[34][35]
On August 26 her debut studio album, Add the Blonde was released. It reached number 8 on the Polish Albums Chart[36][37] and was certified platinum in Poland.[38]
In late August, she performed at the NRJ Music Tour in Beirut, organized by Lebanese radio station, NRJ Lebanon.[39][40] In September, Margaret won Glamour Women of the Year Award.[41]
Her next single, "Heartbeat", was released in the first half of 2015 and peaked at number 11 on the Polish Airplay Chart.[31] In August, Margaret won two Eska Music Awards for the Best Artist and Best Artist in Web.[42] At the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards, she won the award for Best Polish Act and automatically received a nomination for Worldwide Act: Europe.[43]
She collaborated with Canadian jazz singer Matt Dusk on an album of jazz standards called Just the Two of Us. It was released on November 6, 2015, and peaked at number 28 on the Polish Albums Chart.[44][37]
On February 19, 2016, she released the single "Cool Me Down", which will compete to represent Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.[45][46]
