Gameplay

Sea of Thieves is a pirate-themed action-adventure cooperative multiplayer game played from a first-person perspective.[1][2] The game features cross-platform play between Windows-based personal computers and Xbox One video game consoles.[3] A group of players travel and explore an open world via a pirate ship and assume different roles such as steering, hoisting sails, navigation, firing cannons and other tasks.[2][4] Players will embarks on quests, collect loot and engage in combat with other players.[4] Sea of Thieves is a shared world game, which means groups of players will encounter each other regularly throughout their adventures.[2] The game has a cartoonish art style and exaggerated physics that allow players to be shot out of ship cannons.[3][5]

Development

Sea of Thieves is being developed by British video game development studio Rare.[1] The game is being developed using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4.[6] In November 2016, Rare launched a insider programme initiative to give select member access to an in development version of the game. Rare is using the programme for testing purposes and to get feedback from players.[7]

Release

In June 2015, Sea of Thieves was announced at Microsoft's Xbox press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015 (E3).[8] Gameplay was first shown at E3 2016.[1] The game was scheduled to launch on Windows and Xbox One in 2017, but it was later delayed into early 2020.[9] The game will be part of Microsoft's Xbox Play Anywhere cross-buy program.[7]
