Template:Infobox South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft" is episode 1008 (#147) of Comedy Central's South Park and aired on October 4, 2006 at 10 PM EST. The episode is a parody of the popularity of the MMORPG video game, World of Warcraft, or rather, gamers themselves, and was announced by Comedy Central on September 30, 2006. It was campaigned as the first episode of season 10, even though season 10 officially began in March. [1]

The episode uses machinima with the help of Blizzard Entertainment, the company that created the Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo franchises. This is the first time South Park has ever used this genre of animation.

The title of the episode is a reference to the 1960s counterculture saying "make love not war".

Plot

Template:Spoilers Someone keeps logging onto the World of Warcraft game and killing the South Park characters' in-game avatars, despite the game's rule that a character must accept a duel before fighting. This leads to everybody becoming incredibly frustrated with the game, and wanting to quit the game altogether. Cartman, along with Stan, Kyle and Kenny, gathers the other boys of South Park to combine into a team to defeat this mysterious menace. Nevertheless, the renegade player destroys them all. The makers of the game become concerned that this griefer's mindless destruction will eventually cause people to simply stop playing, effectively destroying the game's membership.

Cartman devises an idea — the four boys will spend all their time playing the game, not going on quests, but killing millions of low level boars in order to safely level up (grinding), preventing them from running into their foe; though boars raise their power level slowly ("2 experience points a piece"), they begin to get stronger by playing constantly (approximately 20 hours per day, for seven weeks). In the process, they become grossly overweight, acne-ridden, and begin to use large amounts of Internet slang ("uber" and "pwned"). They become so lazy that Cartman speaks to his mother through an intercom, ordering Hot Pockets and a bedpan to pass diarrhea while they continuously play in his basement. The boys' characters grow so quickly that the Blizzard executives take notice, marvelling that "they must have no lives." Determined to help them slay the enemy (who is portrayed as simply being another fat, pimply geek who wears a wrist brace and eats junk food and as stated by the Blizzard execs. "A person with absolutely no life"), Blizzard decides to give the four boys the "Sword of a Thousand Truths" — a weapon that was considered so powerful that it was removed from the game, though a prophecy (from a guy in accounting) says it will one day be used. However, the boys, not privy to the plan, engage the enemy early, at a level where the executives predict a 90% chance of failure.

The executives show up at Stan's house, but he is at Cartman's, fighting the enemy with the others. Randy, who is a "noob", and also obsessed with Warcraft, takes the Sword (which is stored on a 1 gigabyte USB flash drive) and is determined to sign onto the game to give it to Stan (the Blizzard execs don't have WoW accounts - they sanctimoniously tell Randy that they "have lives"). After running around town, trying to find a suitable computer, they finally find one at a Best Buy, and Randy manages to get the Sword to Stan before being killed (in the game), and Stan then uses it to horribly weaken the foe so the others can kill him: Kenny shoots the renegade in the chest with an arrow, then Kyle casts a fire spell on the renegade, knocking him down. With the words, "Looks like you're about to get pwned," Cartman crushes the griefer's head in a bloody explosion. Stan's character holds Randy's dying character for a moment before he passes on, and the other Warcraft players rejoice. Stan asks what they'll do now that the game is done. Cartman responds that they can "finally" play the game, apparently ignoring the fact that in training to kill the griefer, they've been doing this for the past several weeks. Cartman then continues to direct the others in continuing the game.

Kenny's 'death'

Kenny's World of Warcraft character dies after being killed by the renegade character several times like everyone else (though he died first). He doesn't die in real life. But when Kenny's character is first killed, Stan and Kyle say their trademark phrases ("Oh my God! They killed Kenny!" "You bastard!")

Characters' Warcraft data

  • No Horde players are seen in this episode.
  • Token's character is the only black character in the group.
Character Race Class Remarks
Cartman (bigboNed3) Dwarf Warrior Cartman's character is the main tank and wields an Unyielding Maul. He is the leader of the boys' group and is always the last killed. His armor color is the same as his jacket. He is a warrior, but when you see his actionbar, it looks like a Rogues actionbar (It has Eviscrate and Stealth).
Stan (Luvs2SPWGE) Human Warrior His armor color is the same as his hat. Though, he could be considered a paladin until the end, when Cartman tells Stan to check his Fury talents, a warrior talent branch. His name is acually Stanlizzard or Stanblizzard when it shows the game through his computer (about 1:30 into the episode).
Kyle Human Mage Kyle's character has an Arcane/Fire spec. His armor color is the same as his hat. Cartman makes fun of his character because it is female.
Kenny Human Warrior Kenny's character dies twice in game, the first time receiving the usual "Oh my God, they killed Kenny" response from his friends. The second time, Jimmy informs that Kenny is down. His armor color is the same as his parka. Kenny has Trueshot Aura which is mentioned he uses. Kenny character kicks the ganker in the final fight (which interrupts spellcasting), so he might also be a rogue.
Randy (Falcorn) Human Warrior He incorrectly suggests that he is a hunter.
Token Human Rogue His class is not made explicit, but his leather armor and melee fighting suggests a rogue. His character is dark skinned just like him.
Jimmy Night Elf Hunter Jimmy's character is wearing a quiver and leather armor, suggesting a hunter.
Timmy Human Priest Timmy's character is wearing the starting equipment for the priest class.
Butters Dwarf Warrior Butters has the exact same character as Cartman. After Cartman tells him to change characters, he leaves. Although it is not mentioned, another human female is with the group afterwards that may be Butters again.
Ike Human Priest Ike is wearing the Devout set (minus the head), an end-game dungeon set for priests.
Clyde Night Elf Hunter Clyde is wielding a crossbow and wearing leather armor.
Tweek Gnome Warrior Tweek's character is seen only on fire, but he appears to have a sword and shield. Warriors are the only gnome class who can use shields.
Craig Gnome Mage Craig's character is wearing robes and a staff, and Cartman instructs him to use his intellect buff – a spell only mages can cast.
Mysterious Guy Human Warrior This guy's character is shirtless and wears a helmet, boots and gloves.

Trivia

  • The sword used to defeat the ganker is graphically identical to the epic sword The Hungering Cold, although it doesn't work like the one in this episode.
  • Tweek makes his first speaking appearance since the Season 9 episode Marjorine.
  • The French phrase Cartman says during his Hitler speech is "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, Clyde?" which means "Do you want to sleep with me, Clyde?".
  • The unnamed Renegade player does not have a single line of dialogue. His stature partially resembles Tourettes Guy.
  • Throughout the episode, references made to locations in World of Warcraft are accurate to their in-game counterparts. This can be explained that a large number of the South Park Studios team plays the game. More likely this is a result of interactions between Blizzard and members of the South Park Studios or a single very knowledgeable WoW player working for the South Park Studios.
  • The bass guitar that Token used in the episode Christian Rock Hard can be seen sitting in his room while playing the game.
  • Live to Win, the title track from KISS vocalist Paul Stanley's upcoming solo album, made its world debut in the episode, during the sequence where the boys are accumulating experience for their characters, by killing boars in the forest.
  • In addition, actual World of Warcraft music is played throughout the episode.
  • The fictional Sword of a Thousand Truths does 120.0 DPS, has a mana burn proc, and has a +80 Stamina enchant. Such a weapon would be incredibly powerful and unbalanced, as the Blizzard employees suggest. Imbalanced weapons and armor do in fact exist within the game that are attainable by players.
  • At one point during the final battle, the renegade player has a souvenir "Pirates of the Caribbean" cup.
  • Trailers for this episode show Stan and Kyle in what appears to be the Undercity, right after Kenny is killed. In the airing of the show, they were in Goldshire.
  • When Randy hijacks a car to take himself and the two blizzard employees to Cartman's house, he does it in the exact same way as in the video game Grand Theft Auto.
  • Some of the words that Cartman uses when they start the final battle are quotes from the Leeroy Jenkins video

Goofs not relating to WoW gameplay

  • When Randy gives Stan the Sword of 1000 Truths, he is able to talk to Stan even though Stan isn't using his headset microphone.

-- although the animators used headsets as a visual clue that the boys were communicating via the computer, headsets are not the only way to communicate via PC. There could be a desktop mic or one built in to the monitor, etc.

  • Cartman's speech remains the same in the World of Warcraft even though he develops an accent that would be expected from a nerd.
