I believe it was you who said in a discussion a few months ago that Template:for should be preferred over Template:distinguish. I don't remember your exact rationale but I remember I agreed with you. In addition to {for} being more helpful to the reader, I've also never been a fan of the imperative tone of {distinguish}; "not to be confused." And so I can't think of any scenario where {distinguish} would be more suitable than {for}. Lizard (talk) 05:02, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I had put it in the template's doc at some point: This template is used in the cases where the distinction between the titles is so obvious that the reader needs no further explanation. For cases where an explanation is required, use {{For}} and {{About}}..—Bagumba (talk) 05:52, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Right, so in the case of individuals {for} should always be preferred. I also think {distinguish} can potentially cause unneeded confusion sometimes, such as if it was used on Joe Greene to distinguish him from Joe Green (American football). Since 99.9% of readers will be looking for Greene, we shouldn't lead them astray by suggesting they're looking for a far less notable person. That's my take. I first became aware of how silly it was with the Aaron Gray mention in the second paragraph here.—Bagumba (talk) 18:08, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, the 'pedia has come a long way since the Hornets became the Pelicans (which I still think sounds ridiculous, but at least they're not Baby Cakes). Lizard (talk) 18:14, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rugby MOS at NCSP

The previous version was the applied MOS for both codes of rugby for disambiguation. I do not disagree with potential confusion that arises for dual code players, but it was felt long ago that (dual code rugby) or variation of, would be more confusing than having just (rugby). The current reverted NCSP is wrong as we have had editors moving pages against both codes of rugby MOS'. For the failings of both codes of rugby, and the lack of co-operation, this was apparently as close as they got to agreeing on anything.Fleets (talk) 11:10, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Protect Avery Bradley?

He’s mentioned in the Blake Griffin talk, will be a target all day long. Thanks. Rikster2 (talk) 23:47, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also, may want to protect Brice Johnson, Willie Reed, Tobias Harris, and Boban Marjanovic Rikster2 (talk) 23:49, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tomlinson vandal

Not sure if you've noticed, but the IP that keeps removing chunks of LaDainian Tomlinson is actually reverting the page all the way back to when the highlights in the infobox read San Diego instead of Los Angeles. I have no idea why they're doing it this roundabout way, but the pattern has been consistent for nearly a year. At least since this discussion. Just letting you know that's what's going on. Lizard (talk) 20:26, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm WP:INVOLVED in that discussion, and I guess one could argue there was no clear consensus there. At any rate, I'd say at least inform editors of that discussion if you think it did provide clear direction. At any rate, an admin has blocked the IP range already.—Bagumba (talk) 00:13, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah there wasn't a clear consensus. So, thankfully I guess, he's making it easy by turning a potential content dispute matter into vandalism. And WP:AGF goes out the window with this. Lizard (talk) 18:07, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dossier suffers from an identity problem

I don't think Dossier knows what it wants to be. It's apparently a dab page, but most of the entries violate WP:NOTDAB. The page gets quite a lot of traffic so people are coming to it looking for something; I'm guessing to learn what a dossier is. So I see three options: (1) convert it into a content article about dossiers, (2) soft redirect to Wiktionary, or (3) rename to "List of dossiers" and then create an actual dab page if needed. What says you? Lizard (talk) 23:27, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You hit the key, which is that a dab is not meant to match partial title matches. #1 is most encyclopedic if you have content. Would still need to provide way for readers to get to specific dossiers (can use "see also" if only a few after paring partial matches). #3 would be better to redirect to List of dossiers, which could briefly define the term in opening sentence and also have link to Wiktionary. #2 is easiest, and has builtin link to search for partial titles. If u r not ready to be bold, perhaps ping the Dab project or the Wikipedia dab talk page.—Bagumba (talk) 01:19, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has closed with a consensus that candidates at WP:RFA must disclose whether they have ever edited for pay and that administrators may never use administrative tools as part of any paid editing activity, except when they are acting as a Wikipedian-in-Residence or when the payment is made by the Wikimedia Foundation or an affiliate of the WMF.
  • Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.

Technical news

  • A tag will now be automatically applied to edits that blank a page, turn a page into a redirect, remove/replace almost all content in a page, undo an edit, or rollback an edit. These edits were previously denoted solely by automatic edit summaries.

Basketball stats

That was kind of the point, to add "dead link" to uses where the name was still present, because those links don't work anymore, and to encourage people to replace them with the ID number instead. howcheng {chat} 23:54, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Howcheng: As far as I could tell, active players (e.g. Lonzo Ball) were still working with supplying the name, and NBA.com would redirect to the URL with the number format. It's players that arent in the NBA anymore that are only available at stats.nba.com. Frankly, I doubt if the number format is sustainable, as websites are always changing their internal IDs without redirecting old URLs. Perhaps discuss this at WT:NBA. For historical players, maybe basketball-reference.com is sufficient?—Bagumba (talk) 00:06, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. OK, I guess this requires more thought/experimentation. howcheng {chat} 00:42, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, Nash wasn't working because your change should have had "player" in the URL, not "players" e.g. http://stats.nba.com/player/959/ All the more reason to test this out at Template:Basketballstats/sandbox with Template:Basketballstats/testcases.—Bagumba (talk) 20:44, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you get a chance ....

Mike James (basketball, born 1990) could use protection. Apparently there are rumors he is signing in Greece so folks are WAY jumping the gun. Thanks Rikster2 (talk) 21:24, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Isaiah Thomas

I don’t know why you changed Isaiah Thomas back to the Cavs. The trade has already been accepted and reported Pennstater90 (talk) 18:01, 8 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
