Was there a discussion about changing NBA roster templates

From alpha order to numerical? The Bulls is numerical but the Hawks, Celtics, Hornets are alpha order. I was going to change the Bulls back but wanted to see if I missed something. Rikster2 (talk) 15:27, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

Not that I recall. I only remember making a comment about the rosters being alpha but the navs being numerical, but I dont think anyone cared. There was some other thread about automating WNBA templates.—Bagumba (talk) 15:36, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
Looked like the Bulls was just oddball so I restored alpha order Rikster2 (talk) 15:41, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

Richard Jefferson returning to the NBA?

Hello Bagumba, I've noticed the Twitter post of Richard Jefferson that he is planning to return to the NBA, as shown on his post.

But the article was changed by someone and stating that he is currently a free agent, things in the article are little bit of messed up right now. If this is correct, according to his tweet that he will be playing one more season before retiring again. Regards. VictorTorres2002 (talk) 10:32, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

@VictorTorres2002: Yes, it was sourced in the article that he is interested in playing again.—Bagumba (talk) 10:36, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
@Bagumba:, Thanks a lot, I thought he has already officially retired after the 2017-18 season. Looks like we will see him play again soon. Thanks again. :-) VictorTorres2002 (talk) 10:40, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
@VictorTorres2002: You rarely really know if a player "officially" retires i.e. filed the paperwork with the league. At any rate, there's ways to get re-instated, so will just have to go off of his word.—Bagumba (talk) 10:46, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Kawhi Leonard

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN NBA insider, Kawhi Leonard signed a 4 year contract on LA Clippers worth $142M maximum contract with Paul George trade. Please read this article. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/27129474/sources-clippers-land-leonard-george https://www.latimes.com/sports/clippers/la-sp-clippers-kawhi-leonard-paul-george-trade-20190705-story.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chaustria35 (talkcontribs) 11:43, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi Chaustria35, and welcome again to Wikipedia. Both of the articles you cited are based on anonymous sources. Woj cites unnamed "league sources", while the LA Times one is based on "people not authorized to speak publicly." See WP:SPORTSTRANS for how these transactions are usually handled on Wikipedia. We usually want a reliable person speaking on the record, which often is when the team announces a deal. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 12:11, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Marcus Morris Sr.

Can you see if the Marcus Morris Sr. Signing to the Knicks is official? Jake22923 (talk) 20:35, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

@Jake22923: A good resource is https://www.nba.com/freeagents/2019/tracker. See if they list anyone under "New team". You can double-check with the news link that they usually provide, and see if it sounds legitimate too. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 05:33, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

Isaac Lesiba Maphotho

WP:MOSNICKNAME is correct, thanks. GiantSnowman 07:52, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman: WP:MOSNICKNAME is part of Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people), which reads This guideline contains conventions on how to name Wikipedia articles. MOS:NICKNAME, part of Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography, reads Most of the examples throughout this section illustrate usage in the title sentence, but are generally applicable to personal names in any encyclopedic text ... It's MOS:NICKNAME that is applicable to prose. The one you cites is related to the page title.—Bagumba (talk) 07:58, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
And MOS:NICKNAME reflects that, and says that "If a nickname is used in place of the subject's entire name, it is usually given separately". GiantSnowman 08:00, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: I was under the impression it was a nickname replacing his given names, and not one that replaces his entire name. For example, he's mentioned as "Bra Ike Maphoto" at africantimesnews.co.za At any rate, I'm not too knowledgeable on him, so will defer to you if "Bra Ike" is used like "Scarface". Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 08:14, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
If the article was at 'Big Ike Maphotho' then I wouldn't have made the change - but a nickname he is given that is used in the media should not be in the opening name, hence why we don't have 'Paul "Gazza" Gascgoine' (though the nickname is mentioned later in the lede, which is fine). GiantSnowman 08:24, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
However for Earl Strickland, the MOS does say to use either Earl "the Pearl" Strickland; or: Earl Strickland, nicknamed "Earl the Pearl" At any rate, I'll leave it to others.—Bagumba (talk) 08:32, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: Forgot to ping above.—Bagumba (talk) 08:37, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

User block edit warring

This user keeps adding the same content over and over again to Kawhi Leonard, using the same style of edit summaries as if it is the first time. Consensus -- Skills Challenge

I'm a bit confused on what the consensus is at this point? If we're basing it off of the 2011 discussion, then it seems there was no consensus to include the dunk contest or three point contest winners either, yet they are included in infoboxes consistently. I've had numerous movements to get minor things changed on pages over the years, yet I usually have no luck and I'm told that there is no "consensus". I'm well aware of the definition of the word, I'm more so confused about how innovations to NBA players pages, infoboxes, and leads can come about if consensus is such a mystery (at least to me). I've read consensus can change, but it is very brief and vague about how you "may propose a consensus change by discussion or editing."

Is this the best place to ask/challenge/reiterate consensus? Frequently, there are not many responses and when there are, it is usually someone pointing out the fact that consensus hasn't been met. RichieConant34 (talk) 23:00, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

@RichieConant34: At WP:NBAHIGHLIGHTS, it references a 2012 discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_20#Order_of_NBA-specific_highlights. Discussions aside, there is WP:EDITCONSENSUS, in that it's generally been listed that way for years now. If you want something to change, you can be bold and change the articles directly, which you did, and I reverted. Now we are at the discussion phase of WP:BRD. Let me know if you have further questions.—Bagumba (talk) 02:19, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

Google hits check?

Do you know how to get reliable numbers for a Google hit count? A user recently moved Perry Young to Perry Young (basketball) to make way to promote Draft:Perry Young (aviator). I have no issue with doing this if the aviator is in fact the most likely Perry Young to be searched by users, I’m not convinced this is the case and wonder if “Perry Young” should be a DAB page (I don’t think either is a household name). The aviator article is definitely more clearly written and sourced, and I’d but the aviator has a larger contribution to society, but that’s not really what being the primary article means - as we learned with Mark Jackson, it’s all about what subject users expect to see when they search the name. Rikster2 (talk) 20:28, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

When you do a search on desktop, the number of found results shows on top. Like on Google News for search of "perry young" basketball, it shows "About 251 results (0.10 seconds)". This doesn't show on mobiles though. Alternatively, there's https://trends.google.com/, which is the number of times people have used the search term.—Bagumba (talk) 07:04, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
... what being the primary article means: Wikipedia:Move_review#Mark_Jackson just shows me that what is written is not how people !vote, and these "reviews" (WP:DRV included) are just a crap shoot on who shows up. That being said, it's not earth shattering, so I'm not going to stress out about these RMs. BTW, Mark Jackson MR is still open, if you still wanted to make a more formal !vote (i.e. boldface) there for the record.—Bagumba (talk) 07:04, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Ben Kinchlow, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Evangelist (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

@DBigXray: Thanks. I don't mean to make you defensive. I'm actually trying to help you not get into long-term issues. Perhaps you can consider tagging unsourced text, and at least give a couple of days for yourself and others to fix before commenting out/moving. Don't feel obligated to leave a response. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 11:31, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words. Each article is different. The issues are not always the same. Hence my approach to resolve them are also not same for all. As I already said, I would try to be less aggressive in commenting out unsourced content. But again, I am not responsible for its addition into the article in the first place. I will still remove/comment anything that IMHO are controversial as the WP:ITN RD candidates are WP:BLP's and articles with BLP violations cannot be promoted to the main page. Since "controversial" is subjective and our perceptions clearly dont match, so it may be possible that we may disagree again in future. Although I hope we dont. cheers. --DBigXray 11:40, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup team pages moves

Hi. I realize that User:Sawol moved Serbia, Italy and the Philippines articles for 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. I see that you moved back for the United States. Should we do the same for others? --IndexAccount (talk) 10:55, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

@IndexAccount: I moved the US ones back because a plausible reason was not given, and it's inconsistent with US Olympic basketball pages at Category:United States at the Olympic Men's Basketball Tournament. As for the other ones, you can revert the bold move if you dont agree with them. Frankly, when there are other page titles like Great Britain Olympic football team, it seems natural to just have the year in front of the similar title instead of a convoluted <country> at <year> <event> format.—Bagumba (talk) 11:12, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Graham Farmer

I'm puzzled by your decision to close the RM as moved. The assertion that it is the common name was refuted, and high quality sources as well as those within Western Australia call him Graham first and foremost, not Polly. Noting that Polly is a nickname. The most common name may be Graham "Polly" Farmer, but I don't see a consensus in the discussion that the common name is Polly Farmer. Please could you relist or reclose as no consensus. Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 09:24, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

@Amakuru: As there is no MOS:TIES-like guideline for article titles, I left it up to the participants whether the claim about Western Australian convention had any precedence, but that was a minority view. There was no argument that supporters were using non-reliable sources or that they were not of "high quality". WP:COMMONNAME does not disallow nicknames. The close was based on the arguments presented. If the arguments presented were not "right" this time, perhaps consensus can change later. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 10:47, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

It's ba-aaaack.....

Greetings, User:Bagumba. That large, heavily OR/insufficiently germane section on "unbreakable" attendance records, slightly enlarged, all +23,000K of it, is back at the List of Major League Baseball records considered unbreakable page...with no new citations.

So is the long, uncited, heavily OR-laden section on most games played in a season. That is actually a "performance-based" record (moreso than say games managed, won, and lost, which is in the article without challenge, and I can look the other way on, even if it is not a "player" stat). Per my recent partial re-heading/reorganization, games played in a season should - trimmed down and properly cited - be allowed to return and move under the overarching "Batting" heading, as it is a standard statistic included under "Batting Leaderboards" at baseball-reference.com and is, indeed, a traditional "player" stat scrupulously recorded for both position players and pitchers. But the "unbreakable attendance" records, well, they're the only wingnut at the article...and not something someone is going to think they'll find or immediately go looking for at an article entitled "List of Major League Baseball records considered unbreakable" any more than say "Most hot dogs sold" or "Oldest vendor".

Honestly, that content - properly cited - belongs in an article on "baseball attendance", however constructed. Ideally documenting and explaining historic levels and trends (number of teams, parks and their partial histories, "eras", and so on), and addressing the sport's current (and obviously alarming) erosion (and the various reasons for it).

You gonged that section from the "unbreakable records" article already. Per the above, it's back unimproved. Ditto the uncited "games played". Your serve? Yours, Wikiuser100 (talk) 12:25, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

@Wikiuser100: If I knew it was verifiable, I'd leave it, even without citations e.g. the "Most road losses, season – 101" section. However, I dont know that for this re-introduced text. The WP:ONUS is on editors to show it belongs. Was there something else you were concerned about that made you hold off? Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 14:09, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
@Bagumba: No. I just held off because I thought it was worth bouncing it all off you first, including the rationale for potentially retaining the "Most games played in a season", cited and relocated under the Batting records heading. The attendance stuff, properly cited, really belongs somewhere else, per the above.
I figured since you'd done the gonging first you were clearly willing to defend any blowback from an obviously avid and invested poster. Me, I hate edit wars, they drive me away from the encyclopedia. I didn't realize you were an administrator now - Congratulations - and had been since 2012, until coming to your page for this. How times flies! Yours, Wikiuser100 (talk) 11:45, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
@Wikiuser100: You shouldn't consider a single revert of a bold edit to be an edit war, though you certainly can choose to use WP:0RR and directly discuss if you prefer. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 19:58, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
No, it’s when the revert gets reverted...then things are off and running. I don’t believe I have succeeded once that starts ever. Yours, Wikiuser100 (talk) 16:27, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Bagumba. Just a heads-up that per the above I reintroduced the section on most games played in a season - edited down somewhat, reorganized, and perfunctorily cited. Yours, Wikiuser100 (talk) 14:45, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

2019 NBA All-Star Game

Sorry - I should have checked. It will work however without disruption if the hashtag goes outside the tag: #{{not a typo|nbavote}} - I'll not add it if you'd prefer not, but the typo spellchecks will eventually pick it up again. Ingratis (talk) 15:14, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

@Ingratis: No worries. My objection at the time was solely because of the broken display. After further thinking, however, it seems to me that spellecheckers should be the ones that just leave hashtags alone. It's not something I'll likely get involved in unless it affect readers. Use your best judgement. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 15:28, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

If you get a chance. Thx. Rikster2 (talk) 16:27, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Also, IP 70.113.46.71 could probably use a timeout. As near as I can tell it’s only been used for vandalism Rikster2 (talk) 16:37, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
IP blocked. Also gave it pending changes protection for 1 yr. Let me know if prolems persists and a short-term semi-protect is needed also.—Bagumba (talk) 00:02, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

In relation to this, it's the script doing it, not me. You should raise it with @Ohconfucius: as to why it does it and how it can be removed. GiantSnowman 11:11, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman: Understood. But you know the drill, the editor who publishes the changes also bears responsibility, e.g. WP:AWB. Moving on ... @Ohconfucius: the baseball project regularly uses {{mlby}} to link year ranges of tenures in the infobox of bios. Likewise, {{nbay}} is used in basketball. You may want to bring this disconnect up with the respective WikiProjects (or perhaps wider venue). Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 12:02, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
Oh yes, absolutely - I'm just saying that until you notified me I had no idea that those edits were not OK. I trusted in the script. GiantSnowman 13:01, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
It's a linking template that I once considered to be used for gratuituous linking of dates, which explains why the script removes it. I take it that the problem no longer exists, and I have now disabled those regexes. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 19:39, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Proxy sockpuppetting on the Daryl Morey page

Hi Bagumba I am the user who worked with you on Daryl Morey page when his tweets on Hong Kong blew up. Can you take a look at the contributions by this IP user with the Daryl Morey contributions by this now blocked proxy user? Lots of strong signs that they are the same person/people (the way they write, the sources they use, etc), i would say block the 121 user but but of course it's your call as you are the admin. I would also ask if you could upgrade the level of protection on that page given the proxy editing on the page (just as I had expected which i made clear to you on the morey talk page) but again it's your call. Not anything severe, but enough to stop IP users at least from editing on it. My feeling is that the most important part of the editing phase wrt to the situation with Morey has come to pass, but there still are the aftereffects we need to deal with (i.e. stragglers who hear the news from the grapevine and just are hell bent on skewing the section in one way or the other.) Regardless of what you do though, I think we can both agree: it's a pain that we need to keep putting an eye on this issue but it is what it is. Best case scenario is if nobody in the NBA talks about this tweet thing anymore but of course that really is out of our hands. Flaughtin (talk) 22:29, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

I'm not an expert on open proxies, so I will defer from taking action on those grounds. However, you can pursue it at WP:OP. As far as the content issue, aside from just reverting or boldly editing it, you could consider starting a talk page discussion and see if there is any consensus for the disputed points. Outside of egregious policy violations, I'll also defer on admin action on my part because I'm WP:INVOLVED. Thanks for your vigilance wrt WP:NPOV. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 23:42, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
Will do and thanks for the info. Flaughtin (talk) 18:26, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Baghdadi

Hi Bagumba. Al-Baghdadi got 10 mins before the image was changed. Would you mind if we gave him a few hours before switching to this new image? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:48, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

@MSGJ: I had saw that it had been up for about 6 hours when it was first post on October 28 [1]. It also seems like old news.—Bagumba (talk) 09:03, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
Ah, okay. I didn't notice it had already been up — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:06, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

2019 World Series

Okay, I get that "title" could mean any title. It just said "title" for the franchise but that could only be the World Series. But the city has won a World Series and that seems important enough for the lead. I also don't see the title anywhere so You need to show me where it is.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:08, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

@Vchimpanzee: Thanks for discussing this. The 1924 title is in the end of next to last paragraph at 2019_World_Series#Game_7. I just think the sources put more WP:WEIGHT on it being the Nationals first title, and not as much about DC's first WS in a while. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 18:23, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
It was mentioned on the news, so I thought it needed to be said.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:29, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

1994-95 Seattle SuperSonics season

Hello, there is a user Wikiacontribbutor who keeps making questionable edits to the 1994-95 Seattle SuperSonics page see this.-UCO2009bluejay (talk) 01:18, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

@UCO2009bluejay: That edit on its own looks ok, but I suppose there is more history that you might be referring to? Have you asked them what they are trying to do?—Bagumba (talk) 01:30, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Possible sock puppet on 2019–20 Ottawa Senators season page

Hi Bagumba, I've become suspicious about these two IP users, 2607:FEA8 (long IP address) and 174.112.37.23 that have edited the Senators page. I feel that both IP users edits are very similar. 2607:FEA8 updates the page almost immediately after each Senators game. They edit the page in sections; they would update the info box area where the general team information is, the regular season game log, and the statistics section. Here are the IP's most recent edits [2], [3], [4] from November 7. 174.112.37.23 has not edited since October 27, but I feel that it could be the same person connected to a different internet connection due to the similarities in their edits [5], [6], [7]. A few things that made think that these two IP users are connected, is that they both make multiple edits, the attendance and recap parameters in the game log are blank (although 2607:FEA8 had the attendance filled in the [2] diff, most of the time 2607:FEA8 leaves the attendance and recap parameters blank), and both IP's have edited the page instantly (sometimes a couple minutes) after a Senators' game is over. I could be very wrong about this, but the way these two IP's have edited seem quite suspicious to me. Although, the fact that 174.112.37.23 has not edited for a while hurts the chances of it being a sock puppet. But, as I said, it could likely be the same person using an internet connection different from their own home connection. Also, I apologize for bringing an ice hockey related issue to your attention. Yowashi (talk) 01:03, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

@Yowashi: You didnt mention a registered account, so I'll assume you only believe this is the same user who always uses IPs. (Though having an account and not being logged in can sometimes be OK too, see WP:LOGOUT) If so, there's nothing inherently wrong with using multiple IPs unless you can show it's being done for deceit. Are the edits incorrect, against consensus, etc? The IPs can legitimately be different if they are editing (honestly) from different locations, or using both mobile internet and a wired connection from the same geographic location. In the case of IPv6 addresses, the ISP rotates through addresses where the first four groups of addresses are the same, like these edits from 2607:FEA8:E2DF:F428:* The user has no control over the different IPs, and the are using the same connection.—Bagumba (talk) 02:26, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, there aren't any registered users that edit that page regularly. The only user that edits that page on a regular basis is 2607:FEA8:E2DF:F428. I just assumed that it could have been a possible sock puppet due to the two IP's having such similar edits. Perhaps I may have to familiarize myself with sock puppetry a little more before I make assumptions. I just thought that editors aren't allowed using more than one account or multiple IP addresses in general. That's what I thought sock puppetry was. To answer your question about the IP's edits, there is nothing wrong with the edits that are made. Anyhow, thanks for explaining how IP's work. Yowashi (talk) 02:59, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
@Yowashi: Yeah, check out WP:SOCK if you are inclined. The key problem is when it's done ... to deceive or mislead other editors, disrupt discussions, distort consensus, avoid sanctions, evade blocks, or otherwise violate community standards and policies. Though some get bugged even when edits are productive but they believe an editor with an account is logged out—Bagumba (talk) 03:07, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
