hi re my adjustment Neal Murry i didnt provide source as the article contradicts itself ie places Neals birth as ...... Victoria Australia while claiming their origin as Pupunya in Northern Territority Australia obviously one can't be from two places? Neal does not make any claim to be indigenous Australian so references to his aboriginality are also inaccurate.

I would be interested to know what references are provided to substantiate Meals origins and aboriginality?

Thanks

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.

Miscellaneous

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Hi! Are you a Wikipedia administrator? I would kindly ask you if also users like me Can revert contents. I have Just noticed someone deleted a piece I wrote about Ronnie Radke with silly motivations as It was widely documented and properly cited with references(so there is nothing "skanted" in the Truth). As this happens very often cause of haters and vandals and very annoyed ti rewrite pieces everything ,is there a way ti simple directly revert It? Thanks for your atttention. News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).

Administrator changes

added Sro23
readded KaisaLYmblanter

Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

Subject: Block on User:Mareike at Röchling

Dear Longhair, I have some trouble with my account User:Mareike at Röchling. I will tell you the whole story: At first I used my account User:Röchling-Gruppe, which was originally from the German Wikipedia. I didn't know the account’s name was against the English username policy. I'm sorry for my mistake. (But I am convinced that my changes in Röchling Group were not spammy. Could you please have a second view on the text? No other editor complained about my changes.) After this trouble I created the new, verified account User:Mareike at Röchling to follow all Wikipedia guidelines from now on. But when I tried my first changes on an article this account was temporarily blocked too, because of using the same IP-address. How can I get out of this? It would be very kind if you could help me. Best regards, Mareike at Röchling (talk) 07:24, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Interface administrator changes

added AmorymeltzerMr. StradivariusMusikAnimalMSGJTheDJXaosflux

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
  • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
  • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

  • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
  • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

EnglandUser (talk) 11:49, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Longhair,

I am contacting you regarding your notes about the external links recently added to the page of Oliver Griffin which you have apparently deemed inappropriate and removed. I fail to see how providing further information about the artist's published work and referring to his publisher official website is inappropriate. Could you explain, please?

Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IsabelMarkus (talkcontribs) 12:23, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@IsabelMarkus:, take for example the link you were adding, loosejoints.biz. It's an online gallery, offering art for sale by many artists. It's spam. -- Longhair\talk 12:32, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Longhair: The links referred to the relevant published projects on the official website of the publishing house Loose Joints which is the artist's publisher - not an online gallery. This is certainly not a spam. Could you please rectify this mistake? -- IsabelMarkus\talk 12:53, 4 November 2018 (GMT)
You linked to the main page of Loose Joints, not any particular works from this artist. I see many artists works offered at the main page and only a handful of Oliver's works in the catalog. My opinion stands. It's a commercial site, ie, spam. -- Longhair\talk 12:58, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Longhair: I understand this might be a problem for the external links section but why was the entire list of published work removed when these were only linked to the relevant web pages?-- IsabelMarkus\talk 13:08, 4 November 2018 (GMT)

Hello Longhair, The link you removed has the same purpose as "HomeLib On-line index for early issues of Byte" (second external link in byte magazine page) but on articles level. It contains an index of all articles published in Byte Magazine and available in "archive.org" (first external link in byte magazine page). It offers direct links to over 12,000 Byte magazine articles. It is complementary to other external links in byte magazine page. I've read guidelines about links (neutral and accurate material that is relevant to an encyclopedic understanding, non commercial, english language, ...) and I think that the link you removed is appropriate for wikipedia. Hoping to contribute to the wikipedia project. Regards, Empichon — Preceding unsigned comment added by Empichon (talkcontribs) 16:59, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Empichon: With the title of the subdomain being almost identical to your username, this smells strongly of self promotion. -- Longhair\talk 17:02, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Longhair: The link contains only byte magazine content (cover and summaries) and a neutral presentation page. It is not a question of personal promotion but of a work of volunteer archivist. The sole purpose is to facilitate the search for information and access to archive.org. Empichon (talk) 17:57, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sock puppet blocks

Hi Longhair! I hope life has been treating you well! I noticed that you've made a good number of blocks on some accounts under sock puppetry today (for example: MYLIFEIS122333444455555666666). Are they all controlled by the same sock master or same user? What makes them similar that you know right away that they're sock puppet accounts? Is there an SPI report open? I'm just curious about it and would like to take a further look - just let me know when you can. Thanks, and good hunting! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:24, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Oshwah:. Many vandals have a pattern or signature as you already know. The ones I am marking as a sock are those I recognise so I can refer back later when asked to compile a list etc. I'm blocking far too many in a hurry of late so it's my way of grouping similar attacks under the same banner so to say. A common one is the one using numbers in his username as you've used as an example above. -- Longhair\talk 01:29, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, fine by me. Just curious to see who the master is. Let me know when you file the SPI for these cases; I'd like to take a look at them. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:34, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Longhair. I saw this username blocked as an organization by you. I can't help but think it's actually a joke considering how long Reagan has been gone. By the way, thanks for all your frequent admin work, appreciated. Home Lander (talk) 01:47, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Home Lander: Ha. Both sides can have a laugh hey>? Clearly it's a prank, so I thought I'd return the joke and block it as promotional :D -- Longhair\talk 01:48, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Heh heh. I did a double-take when I saw it crossed-out in the newusers list. Home Lander (talk) 01:52, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wonder if Special:Contributions/JohnAdamsIsHip is related... 🤣 Home Lander (talk) 01:58, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your block on this user for sure, but I'd consider if blocking the user indefinitely is the right solution compared to a 31 hour block. It's clear based off the user's edits, deleted contribs, and the username to match them that he's clearly here to promote himself - and it's highly likely that this is the user's main and only purpose. It's your call of course, but I figured I'd message you, weigh in, and give my two cents. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:43, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Oshwah: First block and all... some learn, some don't, and when they don't, that's when I deliver the final blow. -- Longhair\talk 06:45, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Uh oh... *Oshwah goes and takes a look* (lol) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:53, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Declined. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:02, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Oshwah: Fair decision too. Fancy labeling me the problem? (as they do) :D -- Longhair\talk 07:03, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, that's what I tend to see with users in the same exact situation who request an unblock. They think they deserve a page about themselves despite Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, they don't care to follow the rules nor read about Wikipedia's fundamentals and principles and respect them, and those who get in the way of their main (usually only) objective to write about themselves are obviously wrong and are just after them to give them a hard time - hence they blame the blocking admin (in this case, you). There are people out there who just don't want to be helped and would rather do things the hard way (or sometimes the uncivil or unpleasant way)... we can only help them as much as they want to be helped. *Shrug* ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:10, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
