Dr. Sahruddin bin Jamal (born 26 May 1975) is a Malaysian politician and the seventeenth and current Menteri Besar of Johor.[1] He is a member of the Johor State Legislative Assembly for the state constituency of Bukit Kepong. Sahruddin is also the Johor state Health, Environment and Agriculture Committee chairman since 16 May 2018.[2] Sahruddin is a member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party or Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), a component of Pakatan Harapan (PH) ruling coalition.
Backgrounds
Sahruddin was born on 26 May 1975 to a peasant family at 28th Mile, Lenga, Muar, Johor.[3] He formerly studied at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah 1, Pagoh.[4] He holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Universiti Hasanuddin, Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.[1] He previously had worked as a medical doctor for five years at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital, Muar and operated his own clinic, Klinik Dr Sahruddin, in Bukit Pasir, Pagoh, Muar before entering politics.[3]
Sahruddin married Dr. Nila Armila Mukdan who is also a doctor and they have three daughters.[1]
Politics
In the 2018 general election he made his debut contested as PBBM under the PH candidate and managed to win the Bukit Kepong state seat to be its assemblyman. Subsequently, Sahruddin was appointed as Johor's EXCO and holds the portfolio for Johor state Health, Environment and Agriculture Committee chairman.
He was appointed and sworn in as the 17th Johor Menteri Besar on 14 April 2019 after incumbent Osman Sapian resigned.[1]
