Taina Pereira, or "Caveira", is a fictional player character who appears in the 2015 video game Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege—a tactical online first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal—and other video games published by French video game publisher Ubisoft. She was introduced in the third expansion Operation Skull Rain, released on August 6, 2016. She has also appeared in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands as a crossover DLC character and is planned to appear in Ubisoft's upcoming crossover title Tom Clancy's Elite Squad. She is voiced by Renata Eastlick.

In Rainbow Six Siege lore, Caveira is known as an interrogator working for Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (BOPE), the police tactical unit of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro State (PMERJ) in Brazil. Originally from a small town on the outskirts of São Paulo, she was arrested at age 16 on robbery charges. Her criminal profile allowed her the option between entering juvenile reformatory or working with BOPE.

Within the game, Caveira has access to her "Luison", a specialised semi-automatic pistol sidearm equipped with a custom suppressor and fitted with subsonic ammunition that would down enemies rather than killing them. While enemies are down, she gains the opportunity to interrogate them and if successful, the position and identities of all enemy operators will be revealed for a limited time. She also possesses the "Silent Step" ability, which allows her to move discreetly across the map.

Development and release

On August 2, 2016, Ubisoft released the third free expansion Operation Skull Rain for Rainbow Six Siege for Season Pass owners. Alongside Favela, a map available to the public for free, two operators from Brazil's special police force BOPE were released as part of the expansion, including Caveira, a stealth-focused operator.[1]

In late September 2018, Ubisoft announced that they were lowering the price for all Year One operators, including Caveira, from 600 R6 Credits/25,000 Renown to 360 R6 Credits/15,000 Renown.[2][3][4]

Post-release

Rainbow Six Siege's Update 4.3 adjusted Caveira's interrogation mechanics, fixing an exploit that would prevent players from effectively denying an interrogation by leaving the match mid-way through the process. With the update, Caveira would automatically complete an interrogation if the other player leaves.[5][6]

The Operation Velvet Shell expansion, released on February 8, 2017, introduced Spanish operator Jackal, whose unique ability allowed him to track enemies by their footprints left behind. He was released as a counter towards roaming operators, with editors for PCGamesN and PC Gamer noting him as a counter specifically against Caveira.[7][8] Caveira's Luison pistol had also been buffed to favour medium-range encounters, with the damage drop off being changed from 70 damage at 7 meters to 35 damage at 18 meters.[9]

In mid-January 2019, Ubisoft implemented a nerf for Caveira in their technical test server which decreased the damage, adjusted the damage falloff, lowered the magazine size, increased recoil and increased hip fire spread for her Luison pistol.[10][11][12] The nerf was later implemented into the main game in late January 2019 as part of the Y3S4.2 update.[13][14][15] Ubisoft stated that the purpose of the nerf was to make her "less frustrating to play against and reduce her power level at low to medium levels", as well as attempting to normalise the Luison to be more consistent with the other pistols in the game.[16] The Operation Burnt Horizon expansion, released on March 6, 2019, fixed the Luison's fire rate, as it was lower than intended.[17][18]

In February 2019, Rainbow Six Siege YouTuber Get_Flanked posted a video to his channel detailing an exploit with Caveira's "Silent Step" ability, demonstrating that crouching while using the ability would lower her from a third-person perspective lower than her first-person perspective, giving her a potential advantage in firefights.[19][20]

Caveira is a 1-armour, 3-speed defensive operator who possesses the "Silent Step" skill that allows her to produce less noise while moving for a limited time before needing to recharge, allowing her to sneak up on enemies to immobilise and take them down.[21] While an enemy is down, she is able to interrogate them and if done successfully, the position and identity of every enemy operator will be compromised for a limited time.[22][23]

For firearms, she possesses either a Beretta M12 submachine gun or a Franchi SPAS-15 semi-automatic shotgun as primary weapons and a custom Taurus PT92 pistol nicknamed "Luison" as a secondary weapon. She also possessed nitro cell C-4 explosive and barbed wire as gadgets.[24][25] The nitro cell was later replaced with an impact grenade[26] and the barbed wire was later replaced by a Bulletproof Camera gadget.[27]

From July 2 to July 16, 2019, Caveira, alongside various other operators, were made playable in the in-game event Showdown.[28] The event's featured operators were given Western-style clothing, with Caveira being dressed as a stovepipe hat-wearing bandit.[29][better source needed]

Other Games

On July 24, 2018, Ubisoft released Operation Archangel, the second Special Operation downloadable content (DLC) for their 2017 tactical shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands.[30] The DLC featured Caveira, alongside fellow Rainbow Six operators Valkyrie and Twitch.[31] In the DLC, Caveira had gone missing and Valkyrie enlists the player to hop figure out Caveira's last known location.[32] It is discovered that Caveira's brother had been captured by the Cartel, and the player helps her extract him safely to an outpost controlled by the Ghost Recons fireteam.[33]

During Ubisoft's presentation at the 2019 Electronic Entertainment Expo, they announced Tom Clancy's Elite Squad, a free-to-play mobile RPG.[34] The game featured Caveira alongside various other Tom Clancy's characters, including Sam Fisher from the Splinter Cell franchise, Nomad from Ghost Recon, Megan from The Division, and fellow Rainbow Six Siege operator Montagne.[35][36]

Reception

Morgan Park of PC Gamer listed her in the "Viable, but not essential" category alongside other defensive operators Warden, Maestro, Kapkan, Alibi, Doc, Echo, Ela, Smoke, Lesion, Vigil, and Frost, calling her useless against multiple enemies at once, but effective if an enemy is alone.[37] Writing for VG247, Mitch Lineham placed her as the 5th best defender, below Rook, Doc, Mute, and Jäger, calling her "one of the scariest Operators to go against", but noted that she isn't "too hard to win against in a gunfight."[38]

In 2019, Ubisoft introduced a pick-and-ban system to the Rainbow Six Pro League, allowing players to choose several operators and ban them from play for the match. They later introduced this system to the public in the competitive ranked gamemode. Alongside Blitz, Jackal, and Echo, Caveira is one of the most commonly banned operators by the system.[39][40] While answering questions in an Ask Me Anything on Reddit, The Rainbow Six Siege balancing team responded to a user who asked about the current state of Caveira, responding that they considered her to be well-balanced.[41]

Controversy

On November 2, 2018, Ubisoft announced that they were making upcoming changes to Rainbow Six Siege to have a "single, global version" which would help increase development efficiency. This would mean removing any references to gambling, sex, and violence as well as changes to the user interface elements such as the icons for melee, death, and friendly fire to comply with regulations of Asian countries. Other elements that were planned to be removed included graphical elements such as slot machines, skull graffiti, blood spray, and a neon sign of a woman dancing.[42]

Caveira was often used in arguments against the changes, as she dons skull-shaped face paint and that her name directly translates to "skull" in Portuguese. This is because some of the outlined changes included references and graphical elements of skulls, leading players to argue that the changes were inconsistent.[43] Ubisoft later announced that they were reversing the changes following community backlash.[44]
