Diane Therrien is a Canadian municipal politician who is the mayor of Peterborough, Ontario, a position she won in the 2018 Ontario municipal elections.[1] Therrien is the third woman to be mayor of the city. Prior to her mayoral election, she was a city councillor for Ward 3 (Town Ward) from 2014 to 2018.[2]
On August 13, 2019, Peterborough City Council unanimously passed a by-law to eliminate camping in City Parks.[3] Therrien has stated publicly she will not allow the police to enforce the bylaws as written.[4]
In the weeks prior to the August 13th council meeting, a number of violent crimes were comitted by those camping in the park. There was an attempted murder[5], there was a local business person beaten and robbed[6], multiple stabbings[7][8], the drug trade[9] and intimidation[10].
Over 1700 members of the local community have signed a petition[11] requesting the removal of Tent City. Therrien has not yet responded to the petition.
