Some old stuff

User:Tim Starling/Test1 is not needed, it just hasn't been worth the effort to delete it. If it annoys you, then I guess I can get rid of it. -- Tim Starling 08:29, Dec 18, 2003 (UTC)

 • If it's no longer required for anything, then it'd tidy things up a bit. Cheers! HappyDog 22:54, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hi, please could you stop removing those links from Cyp's signature. I believe he is experimenting to see if the phrase will appear on Special:Wantedpages so he might not be too pleased if you remove them all! Also, I'd rather my watchlist wasn't filled up with fixed dead link summaries. :) It just makes it harder to see whether any real changes have occurred to the pages. Cheers, Angela.

Archiving

 • Hi. I archive whenever the page is big (more than 32Kbytes). I don't really read what I am archiving, I just start from the top and I move some contents to an archive page. Actually it is not a job that I enjoy, it's tiresome and boring, but I do it in order to keep VP's size small. The problem with the Wikipedia:Village pump is a community problem: It fills very quickly and it becomes very big. We (the Wikipedia community) need to solve this problem somehow. Even now, the VP is more than 32Kbytes and people with slow connections and certain browsers may experience problems. I try to keep the Village pump and the Wikipedia:Reference desk accessible to anybody, so I try to reduce its size (ideally to less than 32Kbytes, but usually I allow it to be 40-45Kbytes because I know it fills so quickly that even one day discussions may fill it up) by archiving its contents. Until the community finds some way to solve the VP problem (probably by creating more specific fora), I don't see what else can I do except from mercilessly archiving in order to let people with slow connections be able to access the VP. We also have problems with the servers and big pages create more problems. Sorry for this, but I think nobody wants a 80KB or 100KB Village pump: It would be just unusable. You are free to move archived discussion again into the Village pump. Delete the discussion from the archiving page and move it at the end of the Village pump. Or, tell me which discussion you want me to restore and I will do it. The archiving pages are not protected so you can edit them (you can even continue your discussion there). I am sorry if I archived active discussion, but I just try to keep VP accessible and easy-to-use. You may consider having some discussion outside VP (at some talk page) and just putting a link in VP. Optim 17:28, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Would you prefer me not to archive VP again, and let you to archive VP instead? I don't have a problem with this, as long as someone keeps VP's size less than or close to 32Kbytes. Optim 17:36, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for understanding the VP's problem. Actually I also have lost active discussion about one article I was editing because someone archived it! yes it is annoying, but I didn't say anything because I knew the archiver had no other choice (VP was big). Now whenever I am about to initialise some big discussion which is of interest to the whole community, I start the discussion somewhere else (for example, a subpage of my userpage or some talk page) and I just put a link in VP (something like "those who are interested to discuss about this matter, visit this talk page"). We (all wikipedians) really need to find some solution to the VP problem soon: it suffers from overpopulation :( Optim 18:02, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I don't see any blank lines, though I think someone else has just changed the Mediawiki message, so maybe that's why. :) Do you still see them? Angela. 04:26, Feb 1, 2004 (UTC)

Oh, I thought you meant blank lines at the top. I hadn't seen those ones. I've moved the interlanguage links out of the message and back to the pump. This seems to have solved it I think. Angela. 04:44, Feb 1, 2004 (UTC)

The links you are adding are to pages currently listed on VfD. It might be a good idea to wait until they are more stable before linking them everywhere. Angela. 00:12, Feb 10, 2004 (UTC)

No, I mean the Wikipedia:Community Information Directory page and others like it that you are linking to. These pages might not stay, and if they do, their titles are not yet decided. It would be pointless to link to them all now and then have to change that again in a day or so. It would also be better to add the links slowly so watchlists are not rendered useless. Angela. 00:20, Feb 10, 2004 (UTC)

Oh! I hadn't noticed that. Good plan. :) Still, adding them more slowly would still be a good thing. Angela. 00:31, Feb 10, 2004 (UTC)

There's no need to apologise. :) Angela. 01:02, Feb 10, 2004 (UTC)

Don't worry, you're very low on the list of things that bug me. ;) Angela. 01:07, Feb 10, 2004 (UTC)

Thank you. :) Angela. 19:28, Feb 14, 2004 (UTC)

Refreshing brilliant prose

Hi, thought I'd let you know that the Wikipedia:Refreshing brilliant prose voting has ended. The discussion has now moved over to Wikipedia:Featured article candidates to determing what should happen to these pages. Thanks, Gentgeen 19:37, 16 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hey HappyDog, thanks for stopping by my talk page. After wondering for a few minutes whether or not my memory retention had deteriated beyond all hope, I checked the page history [1] and it turns out that Eloquence removed the dictionary entry. Not sure whether or not he added or checked at wiktionary. Take care, and good fortune. nsh 18:43, Feb 27, 2004 (UTC)

Ordering of "N is also" lists

I agree with you that the "N is also" lists in the number articles should be sorted by widest relevance, and I also think that relevance should be judged from a secular standpoint (since for me, for example, the bar mitzvah age is more important than the atomic number of aluminum). Therefore, I agree with you that Wikipedia should put aluminum ahead of bar mitzvah. But what I'm taking issue with is your suggestion in your edit summary that an edit war could start over this. I'd like to think that Jewish Wikipedians would be sensible and not try to impose their views on others. Robert Happelberg 16:48, 10 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I agree with your edit too, but like Bob, I didn't quite like your edit summary. For me, "edit war" is a far more unlucky thing to say than "thirteen". So I'm knocking on wood, hoping no one starts one of those over this just because that unlucky word was uttered! PrimeFan 17:37, 10 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Sorry - didn't mean to imply anything by that. I've just had experiences where people haven't understood my edit and have just reverted instinctively, and wanted to make sure that if anyone disagreed (or just plain missed my point - which is obviously not the case here) we could talk about it first. I didn't really expect a 'war' as such! --HappyDog 19:05, 10 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Bones in the human body

How many bones in the human body? There's a discussion on this subject at Talk:200 (number), also involving movies. Anton Mravcek 21:29, 10 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Inline tex

For style issues regarding the typesetting of math, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics. In particular, please avoid using this feature as part of a line of regular text, as the formulas don't align properly and the font is too large. -- from Wikipedia:Tex markup page

It's current wikipedia policy to use inline tex markup as little as possible. If it's possible to render something in HTML without losing meaning, then this is preferred. If something really needs tex, then go ahead. But, this is rare. If something longer than a couple symbols really requires tex, then it's best to put it on a separate line. Revolver 01:58, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hi, again. You asked what article I was referring to. It was Integer (computer science). And I think I came across this on another user's discussion page, where you questioned him/her on why the in-line tex was reverted.
I see you like Monty Python. I'm semi-obsessed with Fawlty Towers, thinking of making pages for each episode sometime. Are you interested in doing part of this? (I don't even know, maybe each episode already has its own article, a few months ago I checked and they didn't.) Revolver 18:37, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Translation into English

Please see my remark/question at Wikipedia_talk:Translation_into_English#Split_up_this_page.3F -- Jmabel 17:17, Sep 23, 2004 (UTC)

I'm hoping that we can begin to work out the problems on Talk:Translation. I'm trying to mediate; please leave your comments in the new topic. Thanks, Whosyourjudas (talk) 02:34, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

You added a short suggested message to my page (the Wikimedia Compatible License) which would be a great thing to do if you added that to your page. I created a template which aims to do the same thing at "WikimediaTextLicensing". (See Template:WikimediaTextLicensing). I suppose either your text or the template would be fine. Later! Hello! Thanks for your offer for brightening up the wikispecies logo, I like the idea of the wikimedia colors. However, I'm on vacation now and don't have access to the original file, but maybe the small png at http://species.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Wikispecies.png is useful. I'll come back to you after christmas, best, Benedikt

Nice Idea

As I am very fond of stub-sorting (I know, that's weird indeed): Thx for the compu-soft-stub Lectonar 13:56, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Stack of Books

When you proposed the "Stack of Books" logo at Wikisource you also recognized that the eventual winner would need to sign over his rights to the design to the Wikimedia Foundation. The matter has progressed to the point where it looks like we will be having a final vote between that and the stylized iceberg. Could you please indicate on your Wikisource user page that you are the designer of that proposed logo, and that you are willing to transfer all your rights under copyright and trademark law to the Wikimedia Foundation if it is finally chosen. Namesdays

Oh, sure, that's OK. I was just looking in Wikipedia:Pages_needing_attention/Culture_and_Fine_Arts and couldn't find it there. Maybe Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Cultural studies should be merged with it. -- Beland 05:20, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I thought links in headings were fine--I'm not that fond of them, actually, but I see them in wikipedia all over the place. If it's against policy, I'll start unlinking them. Quill 21:16, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Caesar

ehm, why did you revert my grammar correction? Just curious, Kosebamse 05:57, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Ah well, no problem :-) Kosebamse 15:09, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

About right to left languages

hi friend, in this page of wikisource http://wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Scriptorium/Language_domain_proposal you said it's imposible to create a wikisource for right to left languages, but i didn't understand why was that, especially that hebrew is a right to left language and it has it's own subdomain!!!

hello anonymous! I think you are confusing me with someone else, as I have made no contributions to the page in question, and I don't think I've ever expressed an opinion regarding right-to-left languages in my life! I did archive some old discussions from the Scriptorium by moving them to that page, but I don't think they were related to this subject either. --HappyDog 16:28, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Wikisun

Hi, you need to tag your proposed logos with a copyright tag or else they will be deleted from WikiCommons: Image:Wikisun1.png, Image:Wikisun2.png, Image:Wikisun3.png and Image:Wikisun4.png. Thuresson 8 July 2005 18:16 (UTC)

Locating a bug report

Hi, I found bug #383 which appears to describe a problem I've encountered. You say there that you opened a new bug to replace it, but I haven't been able to locate it (and I'm not really sure how to look) - could you perhaps provide a reference? Cheers, Hv 13:42, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Since you have taken an interest in links. Please be kind enough to vote for my new bot application to reduce overlinking of dates where they are not part of date preferences. bobblewik 23:21, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tarmac Photo

I have taken one of your Tarmac photos for use at Pavement_(material)#Asphalt_paving. I think it fits in there quite nicely, even though that is what your side of the pond would call 'Pavement'...  :) --Mdwyer 05:13, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Logo contests

Hi! Since you are one of the people who proposed very well-designed logos over here, I thought you might be interested in the contests for a meta:logo for Incubator and a meta:New logo for Wiktionary. I'd love to see some proposals from you. =] Looking forward to your participation! —Nightstallion (?) 06:02, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HappyDog/WikiDB

Hi! I like a lot your concept about what WikiDB can be. Can you tell me if you have plans to develop this kind of facility as an extension to Mediawiki? Thanks a lot. IAlmeida 17:08, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

It is very much in development! I am not far from a working prototype. I will announce it in all the usual places when it is ready to go live, but in the meantime, thanks for your interest. I am pretty excited about it... --HappyDog 00:49, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I transferred your PROD on a category to WP:CFD because PROD does not handle categories due to specially handling requirements. 132.205.44.134 05:41, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. --HappyDog 14:18, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Doing something about the ridiculous date autoformatting/linking mess

Dear Happy—you may be interested in putting your name to, or at least commenting on this new push to get the developers to create a parallel syntax that separates autoformatting and linking functions. IMV, it would go a long way towards fixing the untidy blueing of trivial chronological items, and would probably calm the nastiness between the anti- and pro-linking factions in the project. The proposal is to retain the existing function, to reduce the risk of objection from pro-linkers. Tony 15:05, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Last change / Long Integer

Thanks for making improvements to the long int page, especially the table format. Min range / max range didn't make sense before, but I don't know enough about wiki markup to fix that sort of thing.
