Son Chae-young (born April 23, 1999), known mononymously as Chaeyoung, is a South Korean singer. She is a member of Twice, a K-pop girl group formed by JYP Entertainment. In addition to singing for the group, Chaeyoung is often referred to as Twice's main rapper.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Early life

Chaeyoung was born in Seoul, South Korea[8] on April 23, 1999.[9][10] Chaeyoung was 13 years old when she first auditioned to join JYP Entertainment as a trainee.[3][5] Before debuting with Twice, she appeared in music videos by Got7 and Miss A.[3][5]

Career

Chaeyoung participated in the reality television competition Sixteen in 2015.[11] As one of nine successful participants, she went on to join the newly-formed girl group Twice.[2] On October 20, 2015, Twice officially debuted with the release of their first extended play The Story Begins.[12] The lead single "Like Ooh-Ahh" was the first K-pop debut song to reach 100 million views on YouTube.[13]

Personal life

Chaeyoung attended Hanlim Multi Art School with fellow Twice member Tzuyu, and graduated in 2019.[1][14] In 2020, Chaeyoung's personal phone number was leaked on social media; JYP Entertainment released a statement about the incident, and Chaeyoung responded directly on Twice's Instagram page.[15][16]

Chaeyoung maintains a friendship with Jeon So-mi, a K-pop artist against whom she competed on Sixteen.[7]
