SB19, also known as Sound Break 19, is a five-member Filipino boy band formed under ShowBT Philippines Corporation. The group consists of members Sejun, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin. [1] They are the first Filipino act trained by a Korean entertainment company [2] under the same system that catapulted K-pop artists into global stardom.

History

2018–2019: Starting year and rise to stardom

Before their debut, most of them trained for at least 2 years in ShowBT Philippines. The company's goal was to produce talented individuals who have the passion and drive to make it in the industry. The group debuted on October 26, 2018, with their first single, "Tilaluha". They made their comeback on July 26, 2019, as they released a music video on YouTube for their second single, "Go Up".

Their main goal is to break into the music scene of the Philippines with their 'new and fresh sound'. The group has five members: Ken, Sejun, Stell, Josh, and Justin. They started to achieve mainstream popularity when a dance practice video of their second single "Go Up" went viral on Twitter last September 2, 2019.[3]

On November 14, 2019, the group won their first-ever local award as Favorite Group of the Year by the RAWR Awards 5th edition.[4]

The group unveiled its official fan base name, A'TIN (pronounced as Eighteen), on November 2, 2019. In a Facebook Live video, SB19 elaborated on the significance of the fandom name.[5]

SB19 made history on November 20, 2019, as the first Filipino group to land a spot on the Billboard's Next Big Sound Chart.[6] According to the Billboard report, the Next Big Sound chart measures "the fastest growing artists over the past week across all major social music sites that are statistically expected to achieve future success." The chart is calculated by Next Big Sound, an American company that provides online music analysis.[7]

On December 25, SB19 signed contract under the label of Sony Music Philippines.[8]

2019–2020: Mainstream breakthrough

On December 22, 2019, the group embarked on the first leg of their 10-city "Get in the Zone" free concert tour, starting with Negros Occidental and through 2020, on other major cities in the Philippines. Furthermore, it was announced on January 12, 2020 at ASAP Natin 'To that SB19 will be a regular guest for the month of January.

The group once again made history by being the first Filipino boy band to simultaneously chart on three Billboard charts, placing 10th (peak @ 5th) on Social 50, 12th (peak @ 6th) on Next Big Sound, and 49th (peak @ 23rd) on Emerging Artists for the week of March 7, 2020.[9] On April 21st, they landed on the 5th spot of Social 50 Chart and the 25th spot on the Emerging Artists. On April 28th, SB19 climb to the 23rd spot of the Emerging Artists Chart and kept the 5th spot on Social 50.


On March 9, 2020, SB19 was chosen as one of the emerging artists under Spotify's RADAR Program.[10]. The inaugural RADAR class features 36 performers from all over the world. Each will receive special incentives in their target markets, such as exposure of the playlist, documentary material and releases of "Spotify Singles." They will also appear on the latest playlist On Our RADAR which seems ready for monthly refreshments[11][12].

Impact

On November 20, 2019, SB19 made history by being the first Filipino artist to chart and debut on the Billboard Next Big Sound chart debuting and peaking at #6. The Next Big Sound chart tracks "the fastest accelerating artists during the past week, across all major social music sites, statistically predicted to achieve future success," according to the Billboard website.[13]

On December 3, 2019, the group broke the all-time record of longest stay at the No. 1 spot of Myx Daily Top Ten with Go Up reaching the top spot for 52 non-consecutive days.[14]

SB19 is also the most searched male personalities on Google Philippines in 2019. They also hold the record with Go Up for having the most weeks at #1 staying for 13 weeks at Pinoy MYX Countdown.[15]

On December 24, 2019, SB19 again made history by being the first Filipino act to debut on Billboard Social 50 Chart landing on the 28th spot (peak @ 5th)[16][17]. Since then, SB19 has maintained its presence in the said chart. The Billboard Social 50 is a popularity chart which ranks the most active musical artists on the world's leading social networking services.[18] Its data, published by Billboard magazine and compiled by Next Big Sound, is based collectively on each artist's weekly additions of friends, fans, and followers, along with artist website views and streaming mediums.

On January 9, 2020, at 7:00 pm, they released the music video for their third single "Alab" and immediately hit the top spot in Twitter world trends. Two days after, January 11, 2020, the music video reached 1 million views and hit its 2 million views after 9 days, January 20.

On March 26, 2020, for the second time, the group broke the all-time record of longest stay at the No. 1 spot of Myx Daily Top Ten with Alab (Burning) reaching the top spot for 53 (peak @ 61) consecutive days[19]. The previous record was also their song Go up that stayed on top of the chart for 52 non-consecutive days[20].

  • John Paulo Nase "Sejun" (Leader, Main Rapper, Lead Vocalist & Dancer) was born in Cavite on September 14, 1994. Sejun is the main songwriter of the group. He loves hiphop and producing music. His musical inspiration comes from hiphop, and rapper artists NF, GDragon, Zico, Dean and Gloc-9 and Loonie.
  • Josh Cullen Santos "Josh" (Lead Rapper, Dancer & Vocalist) was born in Pasig on October 22, 1993. The group's most charismatic member, Josh is into hiphop and is a professional-level gamer. His inspirations are the hiphop artists and rappers Gloc-9, Smugglaz, Loonie, and G-Dragon.
  • Stellvester Ajero "Stell" (Main Vocalist & Lead Dancer) was born in Las Piñas on June 16, 1995. Stell is the main choreographer and the group's heavenly voice. His musical inspirations are Jed Madela and Morissette Amon.
  • Felip Jhon Suson "Ken" (Main Dancer, Vocalist & Rapper) was born in Cagayan de Oro on January 12, 1997. Ken loves to create his own choreographies and songs. His musical inspirations are Daniel Ceasar, Al James, and IV of Spades.
  • Justin de Dios "Justin" (Youngest, Visual, Vocalist, Dancer & Rapper) was born in Malabon on July 7, 1998. Justin loves to draw and does photography. His musical inspiration is Michael Pangilinan.
