Dong Sicheng (Chinese: 董思成; pinyin: dǒng sīchéng), known professionally as WinWin (Hangul: 윈윈; Chinese: 昀昀; pinyin: yúnyún), is a mainland Chinese singer, rapper, and dancer based in South Korea and China. He is best known as a member of the South Korean K-pop boy group, NCT and its sub-units NCT 127, NCT U, and China-based unit WayV.[1]
Early life
WinWin was born on October 28, 1997 in Lucheng District, Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, China.[2] In 2009, WinWin was admitted to the Affiliated Secondary School of Beijing Dance Academy where he ranked first in the Chinese Classical Dance major.[3] During his freshman year in 2015, he was street cast by an SM Entertainment scouting agent at his school's entrance.[4] He initially thought he was being scammed, so he gave the recuiter a fake phone number. The scouting agent, however, managed to find him a second time where they convinced him of their position at SM Entertainment and offered him a chance to be a trainee at the company that would later land him a spot in NCT.[5]
Career
Pre-debut
- On January 5, 2016, WinWin was introduced to the world as a member of SM Entertainment's pre-debut trainee group, SM Rookies.[6]
- On February 1, 2016, a video of WinWin performing a beautiful rendition of Chinese classical dance was released as the third installment of NCT's debut teasers on SM Town's official YouTube channel.
2016-2017: Debut and early days with NCT 127
- On April 9, 2019, WinWin appeared alongside NCT U in China at the 16th Music Feng Yun Bang Awards for their first live performance of "The 7th Sense". At the time, WinWin has not been officially introduced as a member of NCT.[7] On the same day, he also made a cameo on NCT U's music video for "Without You".
- On July 1, WinWin was announced as a member of NCT's second unit, NCT 127 along with Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Mark, and Haechan. The unit is based in Seoul, with the number "127" representing the first three digits of the city's longitude coordinate.[8]
- NCT 127 went on to win the Best New Group of 2016 in several year-end music award ceremonies, including Asia Artist Awards, Golden Disc Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards, and Gaon Chart Music Awards.
2018: NCT U and NCT 2018
- On February 18, 2018, WinWin made his second debut on sub-unit, NCT U with "Boss" alongside Taeyong, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Jungwoo, Lucas, and Mark.[9]
- On August 13, 2018, SM Entertainment announced that they are planning on debuting NCT's fourth sub-unit, "NCT China", which the company has said is a temporary group name. SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man stated that the sub-unit will consist of NCT's Chinese members and will focus on promotions in China.[10]
- On November 22, 2018, it was announced that WinWin would not be participating in NCT 127's comeback activities for the repackaged edition of their first studio album, Regular-Irregular, titled Regulate, so that he could prepare for his third debut with NCT's China-based sub-unit.[11]
- On December 31, 2018, SM Entertainment announced NCT's fourth sub-unit, WayV (Chinese: 威神V; pinyin: wēishén V), which will be based in China. WinWin was announced as a member alongside Kun, Ten, Lucas, Hendery, Xiaojun, and Yangyang. WayV is managed under Label V, SM Entertainment's new exclusive Chinese label and officially debuted on January 17, 2019 with the Chinese version of NCT 127's "Regular".[12]
- Although WayV is a sub-unit of NCT, it is not being promoted as part of NCT. There were many speculations that the exclusion of WayV from the NCT brand is due to tense relations between China and South Korea. However, SM Entertainment CEO Chris Lee have acknowledged that WayV is NCT's China-based unit in a press conference.[13]
2019-present: WayV and solo endeavors
- On December 4, 2019, WayV took home the award for Best New Asian Artist at the 2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards.[14]
- On March 30, 2019, WinWin joined as a cast member of Hunan Television's My Brilliant Masters (Chinese: 我们的师父]; pinyin: wǒmen de shīfu) alongside Wowkie Zhang, Yu Xiaoguang, and Liu Yuning.[15]
Personal life
- WinWin has lived away from his family since 2009, when he moved from Wenzhou to Beijing in order to attend Beijing Dance Academy for six years. In 2015, he moved to Seoul, where he became a trainee at South Korea's largest entertainment company, SM Entertainment. WinWin has said that since his primary school graduation, he's only been able to visit his family in Wenzhou, for about a few days each year. He also has an older sister who has been living in New Zealand for a long time.[16]
- WinWin currently attends Central Academy of Drama where he majors in Performing Arts.
