Lodge Heather No.928 SC

HISTORY OF LODGE HEATHER 928 SC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munnar[1]

Mr. Henry Gribble father of Baroness von Rosenburg, paid the High Range a visit about April 1901. He was a keen Mason and under his persuasion those who were Freemasons got together; six of these were members of Scottish Lodgers, while A. Ff. Martin was a member of an English Lodge, “Faith, Hope and Charity,” Ootacamund. On the 24th May 1902, Lodge Heather was opened. The installation took place by a quorum of seven members, Mr. Gribble officiating. A. Ff. Martin was elected the first Master. A beautiful hymn composed by Mr. Gribble was sung at the opening and again in the little room where we held church services the next day. The words are well worth printing.

We pray our ancient order May rule throughout the land; And we may form as brethren One firm united band. No envy, no hatred, No discord shall be there; For this alone our motto: ‘In all things just and fair’

Our craft each creed embraces, Each colour and each race Here every man is a brother For each we find a place. We worship all one Master, One God we all adore; His guiding aid we ask for, His blessings we implore.

Of one colossal temple We form the living stones, In which by love cemented Love speaks in gentle tones. Built on this firm foundation We deem three duties chief------ To practise to each other Truth, Honour, and Relief.

Thus can we our duty And thus fulfil our trust; Thus can we form, thus only, A perfect Lodge and just; Until the last dread summons Shall call us hence above To that grand \lodge in Heaven The Lodge of perfect love.

Lodge meetings took place full moon and proved a great success. New Masters were installed each year and more than once have the rights of the Masonic funeral been given to Masons who have passed beyond. Baroness von Rosenburg, Mrs. Martin and Miss Anna Martin, sister of Mr. A. Ff. Martin, were the ladies interested in the furnishing of the Lodge, and they made cushions, covered them with dark green silk trimmed with the gold cord. The maid the banner, the elephant drawing of which was taken from a photograph of a very fine tusker from the kedders in Mysore. It was indeed a work art, and is probably in existence to this day. The building where the meeting were first held was part of the present head quarters offices and one of the old rooms is now used by the \General Manager. This rooms were entered by wooden steps placed almost in the same place as the steps are now. Part of that building was the first premises of the Munnar Supply Association. The Lodge meetings were continued for years in these premises, until the present rooms were taken over, they once were used as the club library. The lower rooms form the first station from the steam tram, and the rice stores have been now converted into a very good school for the bigger boys and girls of our writers and clerks.

Christ Church

Church News The first Bishop to visit the High Range was Bishop Hodges. He rode from Kodaikanal in April 1898 and was met by Mr. Martin about three miles beyond Bomabardie Shola. Mr. Martin had his rifle with him and as he was resting in the shade waiting for the Bishop, about three miles beyond Bombardie Shola. Mr. Martin had his rifle with him and as he was resting in the shade waiting for the Bishop, about three o’ clock in the afternoon, a fine herd of Bison, with a bull that was very attractive to a sportsman appeared. An affectionate young cow was between Mr. Martin and bull, preventing a good shot. Mr Martin brought down the cow first. Then with the second barrel the bull fell shot through the heart. The herd turned back into the jungle and were right on his track. To save himself from being run over and perhaps killed, he fired again. Another young cow fell and rolled almost to his feet. Taking his shikar knife he cut off their tails as trophies, the easiest and lightest parts, to show his sport of the day. Afterwards he went on to meet the Bishop. On seeing these three tails the Bishop asked, “Do the planters on the Travancore Hills do this very often?’’ Bishop Hodges was the guest of the Martins for a week. He held two services, one at the Chittavurrai bungalow and the others at Mrs. Thorp’s bungalow at Kundalle. He visited several other estates and then returned by the Bodi – Mettu Ghaut passing Devikulam and Periakanal. About 1905 Mr. Buchanan encouraged the managers of the K.D.H.P. Co. To subscribe to the building of the church at Munnar. This idea was well received. The company was very generous in making up the sum collected to that actually required for building. A site was choosen just below the cemetery and here the present church was erected; it took about a year to built. It is a pretty and pleasant building. The first recorded service took place on May 1st 1898 at Mr. W. D. Martin’s bungalow at Shollamalai. The service was taken by the Rev. C. A. Neve, C.M.S. Missionary. Eight adukts were present and a baby was baptized. In the early days chaplains bad, of course, to move about on horseback, just as the planters did. The first chaplain to visit us was the Rev. F. E. Markby. He came in September 1903. The next was the Rev. B. C. B. Irwin; his coming in 1905 was a great help. It was pleasant to have in the pin, came Rev. W.F.B. Hoysted ( 1909 – 1912). Rev. W. Bateman followed him (1912 – 1916). Then there was Rev. Basil I. Morgan (1916 – 1920 ), followed by Rev. D. B. Reynolds (1920 – 1924). He left just after the armistice service in 1924, and from then until November 1925 there were no services held. The present chaplain lives in the Parsonage near the church. This house was built in 1920. The beautifully laid out grounds and lovely – trees are due to Mr. Buchanan’s good palnning and judgement. Before the church was bult the back office was used. There Mr. Irwin and others conducted services. The history of the Christ church, Munnar really begins with the history of the cemetery attached to it. Mrs. Eleanor Knight, the wife of Mr Henry Knight, General Manager, was buried there in 1894. Mr Knight afterwards presented the ground to the community as a place of burial. It was formally consecrated on April 15th 1900, Easter Day, by the Right Rev. E. Noel Hodges, The second Anglican Bishop in Travancore and Cochin. The foundation stone of church was laid on March 11th 1910 by Sir A. K. Muir. This is not recorded in the church service register. It was dedicated on Easter Day, April 16th , 1911, by Bishop Charles Hope Gill, D.D., third Bishop in Travancore and Cochin. The Rev. W. F. B. Hoysted was Chaplain at the time. The burial register opens with the record of Mrs Knight’s burial. Five others are recorded before, the formal consecration of the cemetery. After the consecration the first burial was that of Doris, daughter of Walter and Maud Pereira, on March 12th, 1901. Of the 27 burials recorded up to April 1929 only six have been conducted by clergymen. The Baptismal Register opens with the baptism of Herbert Edward Leslie Tissera on January 26th, 1902, by the Rev. R.W.H. Stuart, Chaplain of St. John’s Calcutta. The first baptism conducted in Christ Church was that of Ruth Swayne on April 22nd, 1911, by Bishop Gill. The baptismal register is the only register which has so far attained a second volume. The Marriage Register opens with the marriage of Mr. Alexander MacDonald, farrier, to Miss A. E. Rodrigues by the Rev. F. E. Markby, Chaplain, on Janurary 5th 1904. The next recorded marriage, that of Mr. James Hampron Cantlay to Miss Margaret Emily Bewely on January 12th 1912, was celebrated in the new church by Rev. W. F. B . Hoysted, Chaplain. All the earlier marriages were by banns. Not until January 1927 do we find the record of a marriage by license, the first couple to be married thus being Mr. W. S. Mackay and Miss John. The Marriage Register also happens to contain a record of the plague scare of 1927-1928. This is due to the fact that the Munnar Church was, by Government demand, closed from December 1927 to March 1928 as a measure of precaution. Thus the marriage of Mr. William Stanley Rowson to Miss Eva Nellie Torr Todman on February 2nd 1928 had to be celebrated in the Church of the Ascension, Yellapatty. The Chaplain was assisted by the bride’s father, Rev. John Todman, L.M.S. missionary at Gooty. Indian Church News The Indian Church was one of longer standing than our English. Rev. S. Vethamanickam of the American Madura Mission Church, Bodinayakanur, was the pioneer eyangelist of the High Range. He was a most able and God-fearing man. In 1890 there was no Traveller’s Bungalow in Bodinayakanur and the Europeans were made very welcome in Pastor Vethamanickam’s thatched school-house there, He helped them by getting supplies and coolies at their request, He used to come up to the High Range twice a year to hold services for the Indians and to collect subscriptions for the support of his own church. During his visits he was keen to bring Pulias living below Talliar and Chattamanar to Christianity. The first Indian baptism was conducted by him near the riverside and many people came to it. Later a catechist was appointed and paid for by Mr. Thangasamy, late conductor of Talliar, and continues his work to his day. The first prayer house was built at Devicolam and a catechist, D. Samuel; was appointed; he afterwards became a conductor. The Church Missionary Society, having work in South and Central Travancore; took over the North Travancore work, and in 1912 or 1913 a catechist, Antony, was appointed to Munnar. Rev. P. Samuel became pastor in 1918 or 1919. He was transferred from the Wyanaad to the Indian Church of the High Range Mission and has remained there. Two new pastors have been engaged for further extension work-one for Sothuparai, Talliar, Mattupatty and Ellapatty churches, and the other for Periakanal, Lockhart and the South side. [2]

Only Organic

Only Organic is an exclusive organic firm dealing with organic goods and services started by four friends viz., Mrs.Ramlath, Mr.Kuriakose, Mr.Manish and Mr.Pinoj of Munnar. Their theme is "Saving Earth, Serving Society". They started with tea since this tea is the most dangerous non organic food in the world because the place where the majority of pesticides are washed off of tea leaves is in your cup. Unlike food that you can wash or soak before consumption, dried tea leaves are used once when wet. To accelerate this, boiling water magnifies the release of chemicals from the leaves. While some pesticides and fertilizers are naturally removed during processing, many are water-soluble, meaning they stay in the leaf structure- only to be removed when steeping. Many studies provide evidence that synthetic pesticides cause significant health risks to people including birth defects, damage to the nervous and endocrine systems, hormonal imbalances, respiratory disorders and various types of cancers.
