The 2010–11 season will be Tottenham Hotspur's 19th season in the Premier League. It will be their 33rd successive season in the top division of the English football league system.

The campaign will feature Tottenham's first ever involvement in the UEFA Champions League, entering the Play-off round due to finishing Fourth in the 2009–10 season.

Season 2010–2011

Pre-season

Transfers

Tottenham began their transfer movement for the 2010–11 season in mid-March, when on the 26 March 2010, Spurs completed the deal for young Brazilian midfielder Sandro, joining the club from Internacional, a club whom Tottenham have a key affiliation with, Sandro will link up with squad once the 2010 Copa Libertadores is completed. Back-up goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini signed a new season long contract following his recovery for a serious road accident sustained in November 2009,[1] along with the club captain Ledley King, who also committed to the club by signing a 2 year deal on the 16 May 2010, that will keep him at Spurs until 2012.[2] Also, youngster Anton Blackwood signed a 1-year deal to keep him at the club until 2011. Luka Modric also replied to the speculation linking him with Europe's top clubs by signing a bumper 6-year deal, expiring in 2016. The same day, goalkeeper David Button signed a 3 year extension to his Spurs contract. Also, a couple of fringe players, including veteran goalkeeper Jimmy Walker, left the club available on free transfers. Also, young defender Steven Caulker who impressed for the England under-19s signed a contract keeping him at the club until 2013. Tottenham then allowed Dorian Dervite to join Villarreal C.F. for an undisclosed fee and youngsters David Button, Oscar Jansson and John Bostock to go out on loan to Plymouth Argyle, Northampton Town F.C. and Hull City respectively.

Friendlies

Spurs kicked off pre-season by getting a win under their belt against A.F.C. Bournemouth. Tottenham won the game 4–0, with goals from Danny Rose, Jon Obika and a brace from Roman Pavlyuchenko. Tottenham began a series of matches in the United States of America by drawing 0–0 in a game with few chances with feeder club San Jose Earthquakes on the 17 July, before competing in the New York Football Challenge, a tournament featuring Spurs, New York Red Bulls, Sporting Lisbon and Premier League rivals Manchester City from 22 July to 25 July 2010. Spurs won their first match, against New York, 2–1.[3] The final game of the tournament, against Sporting Lisbon, was an entertaining 2–2 draw, which resulted in Sporting lifting the trophy of the New York Challenge. Tottenham took an early lead through Robbie Keane, finishing well one-on-one with the 'keeper. Lisbon hit back with goals from Chileans Matias and Valdes. Spurs equalised though 20 minutes from time after Jon Obika ran on to a Keane through ball to cap a man-of-the-match display. A Spurs XI also came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Leyton Orient, Ryan Mason & Jon Obika amongst the goals. Spurs's first friendly at White Hart Lane against Villarreal ended in a 4-1 defeat, with Giovani dos Santos scoring Spurs' only goal and Giuseppe Rossi getting a hat-trick. Tottenham then traveled to Lisbon to play Benfica in the Eusébio Cup. Spurs ended up lifting the trophy after securing a 1-0 win, with Gareth Bale scoring the only goal. On the same day, Ledley King got through 45 minutes unscathed in an XI Friendly against Ipswich Town, Pavlyuchenko scoring the only goal as Spurs won 1-0. Spurs played Fiorentina at home in early August as their final friendly of the pre-season.[4] In this game, a defensive error gifted Fiorentina the lead inside 10 minutes through Alberto Gilardino. Spurs hit back though with an equalising goal from Roman Pavlyuchenko, scoring his 4th goal in pre-season. Fiorentina re-gained the lead though ten minutes later with a shot from Adem Ljajić beating Gomes. Spurs however dominated the second half, and eventually won the game through a well taken brace from Robbie Keane. Spurs then took a youthful XI side to Hampton & Richmond Borough F.C.. The game ended 1-1 with a late Harry Kane equaliser. The XI then beat a strong Charlton Athletic F.C. side 3-2, Luongo & Obika (2 goals) finishing off the visitors at Spurs Lodge.
