Revision as of 13:31, 2 October 2010

Template:Infobox Ryder Cup The 38th Ryder Cup, which pits teams of professional golfers from the USA and Europe in a three-day series of matches, will be held 1–3 October 2010 at the Celtic Manor Resort in the city of Newport, South Wales. The event, of which the USA is the defending cup holder, will be played on a newly-constructed course. The team captains are Colin Montgomerie for Europe and Corey Pavin for the USA.

It was opened by Carwyn Jones, First Minister for Wales.[1]

Format

The Ryder Cup is a match play event, with each match worth one point. The competition format that was originally scheduled to be used was as follows:

  • Day 1 (Friday) — 4 four-ball (better ball) matches in a morning session and 4 foursome (alternate shot) matches in an afternoon session
  • Day 2 (Saturday) — 4 four-ball matches in a morning session and 4 foursome matches in an afternoon session
  • Day 3 (Sunday) — 12 singles matches

With a total of 28 points, 14½ points are required to win the Cup, and 14 points are required for the defending champion to retain the Cup. All matches will be played to a maximum of 18 holes.

It is the second time in succession that the schedule for four-ball (better ball) and foursome (alternate shot) matches on Day One and Day Two has been changed, i.e. it was scheduled to be effectively the same timetable as was used in 2006.

Revised format

As a result of the long suspension of play on the first day due to heavy rain, the format for the rest of the competition has been changed to try and bring a conclusion to the matches on Sunday. Because of the changes there will be a number of Ryder Cup firsts. For the first time in the history of the Ryder Cup all 24 players will take part in pairing sessions at the same time in six pairings (as opposed to the usual four pairings) and in another first for the event both foursome and fourball matches will be played in the same session at the same time. The revised schedule is as follows and will now only consist of four sessions as opposed to the usual five.[2]

  • Session One (Friday & Saturday) — 4 four-ball (better ball) matches
  • Session Two (Saturday) 6 foursome (alternate shot) matches
  • Session Three (Saturday) — 2 foursome and 4 four-ball matches
  • Session Four (Sunday) — 12 singles matches

The total number of each type of match remains the same, 8 four-ball, 8 foursomes, and 12 singles. By captains' agreement, if the matches extend into Monday, they will conclude at sundown Monday. Any matches still in progress will be considered halved at that point.[3]

Team qualification and selection

The European team consists of:[4]

  • The top four players on the Ryder Cup World Points List[5]
  • The five players, not qualified above, on the Ryder Cup European Points List[6]
    • Money earned in official European Tour events form 3 September 2009 to 29 August 2010
  • Three captain's picks

In previous Ryder Cups, only two wildcard places were available on the European team, but on 12 May 2009 it was announced that this had been increased to three.[7]

The United States team consists of:[8]

  • The top eight players on the Ryder Cup Points List[9]
    • Point are gained from money earned in majors in 2009 and official PGA tour events in 2010 up to 15 August (i.e., up to and including money earned at the 2010 PGA Championship). Money earned in 2010 majors counts double and money earned in 2010 events played opposite the majors or World Golf Championships counts half
  • Four captain's picks

Teams

The top players for the USA (8) and Europe (9) as determined by their points performance (described above) receive automatic selection. The remaining players on each team were selected at the discretion of the team captains. Qualification for Team Europe ended on 29 August, at which time, the captain's picks were named.[10] Team USA was finalized on 7 September.[11] The Official World Golf Rankings shown are as of 26 September 2010, the last assessment issued before the Ryder Cup. The average ranking of the American team was 17.3 and that of the European team was 18.3.
