[[File:Black Lives Matter protest in NY.jpg|thumb|right|250px|One of hundreds of "Black Lives Matter" protests, in New York.] Black Lives Matter is a primarily American movement and hashtag (#BlackLivesMatter) that started after the acquittal of the killer of Trayvon Martin and received fresh impetus from the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown. In December 2014 at least 20 members of a protest that had been using the slogan were arrested at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.[1]

The Economist chose the hashtag form of the phrase as their word of the year for 2014.[2]
