On 14 December 2012 between 7 and 8 a.m. local time, a 36-year-old villager identified as Min Yingjun (Chinese: 闵应军) stabbed 23 people, including 22 children and an elderly woman, in a knife attack at Chenpeng Village Primary School. The school is situated in Wenshu Township of Guangshan County, which is administrated by the city of Xinyang, 800 km south of Beijing, in the Chinese province of Henan.[1][2][3][4] The children targeted by the knifeman are thought likely to be between six and eleven years of age and the attack occurred as the children were arriving for classes.[3]

Stabbing

The attack on the children occurred at the entrance of the school.[5] Min first targeted the elderly woman, aged 85, who lived next door to the school. He went to her house at around 7 am, stole one of her knives and attacked her head. The woman's daughter said an argument had occurred.[6] At around 7.40 am Min pursued the children with the knife he had stolen from the elderly woman's house and slashed them, many of them in their heads.[6] Xinhua reported that some of the children's fingers and ears had been cut off.[7]

Min was restrained at the primary school, and transferred to police custody.[3] The victims were treated at three hospitals.[6] Some of the children were reported to have been taken to hospitals located outside the county in which the stabbing occurred to receive specialised care. None of the victims were fatally wounded. Guangshan county government established an emergency response team for the incident.[3]

The incident has followed other school attacks in China since 2010, usually committed by mentally disturbed men involved in personal disputes or unhappy with the rapid changes occurring in Chinese society.[2] Security guards had been posted at schools across China,[3][8] with all schools to have a security guard by 2013.[9]

Reactions

Also on 14 December, shortly after the knife attack in Chenpeng Village, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in the United States claimed the lives of 28 people, including 20 children.[10][11] Blogs and academics started discussing similarities and differences between these two attacks (namely the fact that none of the children in China died, while all except one of the children at the Sandy Hook school died), and other similar attacks across the world.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] Chinese news agency Xinhua called for the United States to adopt stricter gun controls.
