Redrum is the word murder spelled backwards. It was used in The Shining by Stephen King and in both the film The Shining and the miniseries The Shining based on the book.

Movies

  • Stephen King also uses redrum in other books and movies such as in Desperation where on the wall REDRUM DOG (God Murder) appears.
  • The scene from The Shining where Wendy looks at Danny's writing of "REDRUM" in the mirror as "MURDER" can be briefly seen in the drive-in scene in Twister (1996).
  • In the first Toy Story movie, "Redrum" is said by a doll/metal spider scaring Sid.

  • Redrum was used in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, by the character Xander as a joke in Episode 9 of season 1, "The Puppet Show"
  • The word is spelled out by Stewie using blocks in the episode "Love Thy Trophy" of the cartoon series Family Guy, as well as The Simpsons' Maggie in the episode "Treehouse of Horror V".
  • The Drawn Together episode "Xandir and Tim, Sitting in a Tree" features a killing spree by Billy of The Family Circus. In one of the rooms in the house, the burning corpse of Not Me can be seen next to a mirror with "redrum" written on it in blood.
  • Redrum is the name of an X-files episode on season eight.
  • The Supernatural episode, "The Usual Suspects" Redrum is referenced by Dean Winchester, explaining in a mock video confession that the message the spirit featured in the episode is trying to communicate, DANASCHULPS, is similar to "Redrum"
  • Redrum is the name of a CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode on season seven, the title referring to the use, within the episode's plot-line, of "reverse forensics".
  • In the episode "I Don't" from the second season of the animated series Daria, Daria Morgendorffer intones "Redrum, redrum" as the family approaches the hotel where a wedding ceremony is being held.
  • In one episode of Trading Spaces one of the rooms is painted red, and the designer nicknamed the room "redroom" in reference to the famous line.

  • Redrum is a monster in the Square RPG, Xenogears. At that point in the game, the monster is blamed for many murders happening in the sewers.
  • Redrum is used in the PlayStation game Silent Hill in a street written on a garage door.
  • In the video game Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, "Redrum" is written on a wall inside of a funhouse.
  • In the video game Timesplitters: Future Perfect, there is a haunted mansion level where the word REDRUM can be seen on a chalkboard.
  • In the 3D fighting game Last Bronx, one gang is called "Redrum".
  • Redrum, along with Stendek, is used as command line parameters for the game Aquanox to access the debug mode, and activate the cheat codes.
  • "Redrum" is the name of the third chapter of the parody Mod for Half-Life 2, DayHard. The level is dark hotel with some horror moments, as well as a spoof on the horror movie, The Ring
  • In the videogame "Road Rash: Jailbreak", the player can taunt other racers. One of the "taunt-lines" is "Redrum, REDRUM!"
  • In the mech fighting game S.L.A.I.: Steel Lancer Arena International, victims dying under mysterious circumstances repeat "Red rum red rum red rum... Trick or treat." in red text before signing off.
