Slew of spelling/grammar fixes

I noticed that the character descriptions were chock full of comma splices, wandering tenses, and other basic grammatical errors. I didn't have the time or energy to do a full copy-edit pass, but I did paste everything into a word processor and check all of the things it flagged.
