NASA stuff

I'd be willing to scan just about all of the NASA stuff if it's really only 500 pages or so. Do you want me to send it back when I am done? I was thinking some of the documents might be better OCR'd and converted to wikitext articles, if they are predominantly textual. My scanner can scan up to legal size. For anything larger, I have a hand scanner that scans a path 4 inches wide, can stitch those scans together for larger images. please delete my email address when you are done with it. OK, I have the scanner running, trying to figure out the OCR thing. I uploaded this one file for test purposes. I'd like to convert this kind of thing to wikitext rather than keep them as jpgs, cause they get pretty big. For the record i've had this conversation with the dev's ... the image is on commons, not on the en server. The server load is therefore negligible. Or at least thats the conclusion we came to. I have a question about the above mentioned picture. You state it was taken by Utopium Photography, yet you claim to be the copyright holder. If this picture was not taken by you, but you are the subject the photographer has to release the copyright to you. Paul Oakenfold

I agree that the way I worded it, it sounded like he mixed his own records. I sat there for a few minutes trying to peice together a sentence that would be both grammatically correct and convey the correct message. "Not only did Oakenfold produce records, but he also mixed them." A few too many modifiers. The words but and also are both redundant but without them the sentence is screwed. I did my best to level out the flash, I also corrected the angular distortion so the frame around the sketch looks square now. I also reduced it to greyscale as color needlessly increased the file size for this image. If this is not what you wanted feel free to revert my changes.  ALKIVAR™ 22:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Spoken article help

Hi. I wanted to contribute a spoken article, but I am having trouble getting started. The format suggested (mandated?) is Ogg Vorbis, which my computer tells me is not available in my language. The download site allowed me to download a workaround, which lets me listen to articles using Windows Media Player, but I don't think I can record them. Is it not possible to upload an article as a .Wav file? My apologies if I am asking naive question, but I have never done anything like this before. Jeff, Ogg Vorbis is an encoding format that Wikipedia is required to use due to patents on the mp3 format. I'm sorry you cannot find a Dutch native version of a front end, but the codec has no language requirements. You cannot upload a .wav file due to file size constraints, that is the only reason. A reference is a reference is a reference. VDARE is considered a WP:RS, if said reference backs a statement, which I feel quite clearly it does, it belongs in the article. Whether you agree with the guys tactics, or revert warring is immaterial. A reference is a reference is a reference. We care about verifiability NOT TRUTH, a source to a statement regardless of whether you agree with what it states is a source. We do not, I repeat, DO NOT remove references even when they disparage the subject if they are included to support the opposing viewpoint. If you have a problem with my reversion, please feel free to take it to WP:ANI, but i'm pretty sure everyone's gonna tell you to leave the reference be (unless you can conclusively prove it to not be reliable... and unfortunately all the facts stated on that page are backed by numerous other sources linked in our article).  ALKIVAR™ ☢ 04:36, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

First, I have no opinion on the content of the source. I couldn't care less if it speaks the "truth". Second, pointing me to WP:ANI is quite ridiculous. My message here has nothing to do with you as an administrator. A reference may be a reference, but I disagree that this meets WP:RS. The source fails the most basic concept: neutrality. I have no vested interest in this, but my edit has absolutely zero to do with my personal opinions of the article, its subject, the material the source backs up, or the the source itself. There is absolutely unequivocaly no requirement that a reliable source be "neutral". In fact, you should go re-read WP:RS we can even use EXTREMIST SITES like www.ilovehitler.com (doesnt exist, fictional site) in an article about hitler, or sites like www.theholocaustdidnthappen.com (doesnt exist, fictional site) in an article on the holocaust when sourcing the opinion that the holocaust didnt happen. Neutrality of the source has nothing to do with its reliability.

As to your vested interest, from my seat over here, it looks like you edit warred over the removal of a site that might disparage a subject (even though lots of other sites contain the same information), because you felt it was spam. A reference cannot by definition be spam, due to its relevance to the subject matter. Spam requires it be completely irrelevant... if he had posted a link to an iPod sales site... If my view of the link is incorrect, so be it. But do not accuse me of edit warring. I removed the link from the articles the person added it to once on the 16th and a second time on the 19th. Two reversions on the given articles is not even close to an edit war, especially when I was being accused of being a vandal. I do not appreciate your unfounded accusations either. You recently semi-protected 2007 Timbaland plagiarism controversy with the reason "Libel concerns ... PER DANNY". I'm not aware of Danny saying anything about this. Prairie muffins draft

Is there some special reason you had to delete a draft page I was working on in my user space? And salt it? This seems radically abusive and uncalled for. I was working on expanding the article to survive any AfD! Information/ translation request

Its interesting to note specific examples however... we happen to have an FA on Colditz Castle in Germany... their article for it was a bare stub. It now is a mere translation of some of the articles content (that I spent several days researching/verifying sources and translating from german to english...) While I agree the DE wiki tends to have a better overall editing unit, I think the fact that EN had a featured article on something local to them that was a mere stub for almost a year until it was fixed up 28 May 2006 shows that both still have a ways to go.  ALKIVAR™ 02:15, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Blocking of CyberAnth

Hi. CyberAnth was removing unsourced statements from Rush Limbaugh that asserted that he dropped out of university and that he admitted he was wrong about a statement he made. That seems well within the instructions at Wikipedia:Biographies of living people, and such edits are explicitly not included in WP:3RR. I suggest that you have blocked someone one week for following policy, and I'd appreciate it if you reconsidered. Jkelly 06:02, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

CyberAnth still violated WP:3RR... there's removing content, then theres ignoring all discussion and continuing to remove content. He also pulled a WP:POINT on several other articles... he needs a timeout, his judgement is off. While I grant you that some of the content he removed from Rush Limbaugh was probably a worthwhile removal, his methodology was bad. Doing something wrong for the right reasons is still doing something wrong.  ALKIVAR™ ☢ 06:12, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

WP:BLP edits are exempt from the WP:3RR -- I really don't think that this block protects the project, and seems to suggest that people who are working on BLP should be worried about being blocked because people who don't like the policy edit war unsourced statements back in. I really don't think we should be sending that message, which is why this kind of editing was exempted. Jkelly 06:19, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Regarding the blocking of CyberAnth, I would ask you to take a look at the dispute on the Jimmy Swaggart page, particularly regarding |this verison of the page, which was repeatedly reverted to a stub with all manner of policies cited. When asked to expalin how the policies, especially WP:NPOV, applied to that particular version of the article he was either evasive or gave som opinions on the ideal state of a biography article that isn't really part of the policies mentioned.

User:Grace Note appears to be picking up the baton on that one, and though I beleive him to be operating under a misconception rather than any particular bad faith. Artw 06:41, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

This was a very bad block of an editor who is bravely standing up to an endless stream of nonsense. Please be more generous in the future. WP:BLP is essential the future of the project in every regard and must be taken very very seriously in all respects.
