I honestly forgot you aren't "technically" a full clerk. I guess it shows just how little meaning the clerk fez actually has. ;)
Anyways, do you have any questions for me before I nominate you for full clerkship on the CU mailing list? Reaper Eternal (talk) 17:13, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Question?
Hi, hope you are well. I wanted to ask a question that is is possible to use #ifexpr for a range of value. For example, if we select:
- {{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Artices with long short summary}}=1000–3000|Yes}}
Another question is that is it possible to get to values from the #ifexpr function. For example
- {{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Articles with long short description}}>5|Yes|{{Not done}}}} and get both 'Yes' and ' Not done' as a result. Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 08:17, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- Empire AS, the first wouldn't work like that as the - sign would be interpreted as a subtract, and other symbols similar to the negative sign are not recognized by #expr / #ifexpr.
- You could achieve this by having two ifexpr's. One checks if the number is above 1000 and the other checks if the number is below 3000. If both are true then it is in the range of 1000-3000. If either is false, then it is not. So you could do
{{If both|{{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Artices with long short summary}}>1000|true|}}|{{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Artices with long short summary}}<3000|true|}}|in range|not in range}}
- In regards to the second question, the ifexpr function is defined by
{{#ifexpr: expression | value if true | value if false }}
. So the only things that are returned by the ifexpr is true or false (and by extension the it returns only the values you include after the expression). #expr just returns the result of the expression, if you are wanting the raw output. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 11:56, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- By using the first, wouldn't we get the values less than 1000 and greater than 3000? For the 2nd part, what parser function can be used to get 2 resulting values? Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 12:15, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- Empire AS, no. The first ifexpr checks if 1000 is smaller than and the other checks if 3000 is greater than the pages in the category. So in other words, the first ifexpr checks if the number of pages in the category is above 1000. The second checks if the number of pages in the category is below 3000. True is returned if the expression is true and nothing is returned if it is false. If both checks if both are non-empty strings. Therefore, if both are true, then the first parameter after the expression in {{if both}} is returned which is "in range" (in range as both conditions were true). Otherwise, "not in range" is returned as one was not true. You can test that out. Currently, the expression returns "not in range" as the category has no articles. If this was the case, it would have returned "in range".
- I'm still not sure what you mean. If you want the values from the second and third parameter, then just write them out separately. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 12:27, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

- I'm confused. See my sandbox (in progress). There I want 2 results, 1st Done and 2nd 0. Although I've got the first but I don't know how to get the 2nd value. Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 12:32, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

Still there's a mistake. Some text 'in range' is written multiple times. Moreover, what about 2 outputs? Is it possible to get an extra output showing the range of like 5000–7000. Thank you for helping. Empire AS Talk! 12:54, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
The category contains 6,857 pages which don't fall in any other parser function except the first as 6857 is between 5000–7000. Then why 'in range' is written multiple times? Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 12:58, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- Empire AS, the changes you have made have caused this. You duplicated the expression several times, so that's why there are multiple "in range" written. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 12:59, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

- Empire AS, I realised that "|R" is needed in the pages in category magic template, as the result returned usually includes a comma. The ifexpr conditional does not like commas, so using the R option removes the commas. It should now work, as I have updated this in your sandbox. . Morever, can an extra column of range can obtained? Thank you for fixing that? Empire AS Talk! 13:23, 26 January 2021 (UTC)- Empire AS, the order of the parameters in {{if both}} does not matter. You can swap it around if you want, as long as you leave the expression itself unchanged (as that modifies the output). I'm not sure what you mean by an extra column of range, but if you want to have multiple ranges to check, just copy and paste the code to where you want and change the lower and upper bounds for the range to what you want. For example
{{If both|{{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Articles with long short description|R}}<7000|true|}}|{{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Articles with long short description|R}}>5000|true|}}|in range|not in range}}{{If both|{{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Articles with long short description|R}}<5000|true|}}|{{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Articles with long short description|R}}>2000|true|}}|in range|not in range}}
- If you mean having it in separate columns, then place the copied and pasted code into a row for the other column. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 13:40, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

- I think that you didn't get it. I meant to say that the above code returns us a single output (for example, X) if in range. But is there any way to get 2 outputs (like X and Y)? The above code gives a single output but can it provide 2 outputs in 2 columns? For example, if it returns the 1st output X then 2nd would be Y (both in separate columns). If 1st as A then 2nd should be B. If first is M and then second as N. In other words, I need 3 columns, first 'Category', second 'Status' and third 'Range'. If the value of 2nd column due to 1st, then the value of third column should also change according to the 2nd. The first column provides the value of 2nd column but not of 3rd. How can we get a 3rd value in 3rd column that would change accordingly to 1st and 2nd? Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 04:17, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- Empire AS, I see what you mean now. If you want to have the values in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd column depend on each other, then I think the way it can be done is having the code in each column for the row. You then customise the output for each, ensuring that the the status and range columns have the same category in the check. However, this would mean a lot of duplication and a long file. There is another way you could simplify this. You could create another page which acts like a template, such that you have a definition of a row as a subpage which is transcludable. You can then transclude the subpage for each row, defining the category name and ranges. That would be complicated to set up as a subpage, but would save the amount of raw wikitext on the page. See the page Pages with citation errors. However its code is a bit difficult to understand. Can this code be modified to get a range like 1000–3000. By looking at the code I think it may be used to select a range. Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 10:26, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- Empire AS, using the code from there
{{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Pages with broken reference names|R}}<3000 : |{{#ifexpr:{{PAGESINCAT:Pages with broken reference names|R}}<1000|{{done}}|{{half done|No backlog}}}}|{{notdone}}}}
It displays Not done when the count is at or above 3000, it displays No backlog when the count is at or above 1000 and below 3000, and it displays Done when the count is below 1000. You can add further ifexpr's to get more statuses. To change the range, change the number for each expression, but the order of the numbers has to be biggest to smallest left to right in the expressions (i.e. 3000 then 1000, or 500 then 50). Another thing, can you adjust the template Template:Backlog progress bar small to display only the green bar and percentage unlike Template:Backlog progress bar that displays a box. Thank you.Empire AS Talk! 10:31, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- Empire AS, done. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 12:40, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
I thought that I'd not disturb you again but the issue rose again. First, see my sandbox, in the citations section you may see an error. All the 4 lights are visible but only red light was made to be visible above 20. Other thing, can you please remove the word 'complete' from Template:Backlog progress bar small and add a new parameter for the width of bar like 80% width or 30%. Empire AS Talk! 04:54, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- Empire AS, the error looks to be caused by your use of "≤". The "≤" symbol is not recognised by expr. To achieve less than or equal, you need to use "<=". This is because, as meta:Help:Calculation § Operators, numbers, and constants says, less than or equal is defined by an less than sign followed by an equals sign. It does not list the combined unicode symbol. When replacing "≤" with "<=" in your sandbox it fixed the problem.
- In regards to the progress bar, I have added that functionality and hidden the "complete" from the bar. To define the width, when transcluding the template add the parameter "width" with the width you want. This can be a percentage, but can also be in pixels or em. Global locks
Hi mate, saw your note on Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/DJdjPollard15. What exactly are global locks? I'm keen to see if we can get this sockmaster's IPs blocked if possible, but I dunno if that's what you were suggesting. – PeeJay 22:47, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- PeeJay, hello. Global locks are basically the equivalent of a block of an account but for all WMF wikis. To go into more detail, it prevents an account from logging on any wiki and therefore also prevents the account from making more edits. Global locks do not block the IP of the sockmaster and only affect the account.
- The IPs used by an account can only be viewed by checkusers. Checkusers do not publicly disclose IP addresses they find using their tools per the privacy policy, but they will block IPs and IP ranges without disclosing which sockmaster they relate to. With cases like this, it is possible that the user is on a highly dynamic IP address or they are using different networks. This means it could be a game of cat and mouse with blocking IP addresses. It is also possible that a checkuser has blocked the IP address or IP address range used by the sockmaster following your request. If a checkuser has actioned your request, they won't necessarily respond with "I've blocked the IP address", as doing so would allow someone to correlate the times between their recent IP address blocks and when they said "I've done that" to work out which range the sockmaster uses. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 23:04, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Admin Recruitment ?
What is a "need for the tools"? I think that if you think you need the tools, you maybe shouldn't have them. I think that what we should be looking for is editors who are willing to use the tools prudently.
I am ready to stand for admin again if someone will nominate me. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:42, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- Robert McClenon, my description of that is pretty vague even in my own mind. What that statement means for me is that the editor should use the tools once they get them for the benefit of the community and also in an area which they have experience in.
- I agree that an editor who thinks they need the tools may actually not be suitable, but editors with experience enough for RfA should know and understand what being an administrator is. The saying "A good leader is someone who doesn't want to be a leader" is relevant, and I would agree that an overly confident editor wanting the tools wouldn't be a good fit. However, those who don't want to be administrators aren't going to want or use the tools (and for someone to feel pressured for something they don't want to do isn't good). There is a balance of want and not wanting which I think is what makes a good administrator. My description however is primarily "my life would be easier if I had the tools" / "I could do this if I have the tools".
- The second point about experience is to ensure that the area they initially will work in is somewhere which they understand and so moving from no tools to tools isn't a big jump. This has the benefit of ensuring that the community can see they understand the particulars in this area, so can be trusted to do good.
- Perhaps what I actually mean is "will use the tools to benefit the community". This is also vague, but I hope conveys that an editor should find use for and want to use the tools in a way which will be a benefit, but not overly want them. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 22:07, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- I would say that I'm probably not the best person to nominate, as I have never had an actual RfA run with myself as a nominator / co-nominator (although there is one not yet transcluded). However, I am open to such a proposition if you would like me to. I suggest looking for editors / admins at Wikipedia:Request an RfA nomination if you would like to pursue it. - EditorThanos, I am a adopter at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user which is separate to the counter-vandalism unit academy. I have never been a instructor at the counter vandalism unit academy. At the moment I am not accepting new adoptees under adopt-a-user. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 19:07, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
- Noted:) If you will be adopting, let me know. –EditorThanos (talk) 19:17, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

You are fast today
About 8 minutes from a certain account's first edit until you opened an SPI. Nice. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 22:09, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
- Davidwr, it's all about when the right time is to open the watchlist. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 22:17, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
Discussion
I opened discussion about the very late evidence and you immediately after closing the discussion for rebuttals: [1] Could you explain how me and other editors are supposed to rebuttal when the evidence was posted 30 minute before closure? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 02:51, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- Supreme Deliciousness, I note that the evidence phase has since been re-opened for two more days. I do agree that the evidence was late, and it is good that you can now respond on the evidence subpage to the late evidence. As I had no instruction otherwise, I closed the evidence phase as scheduled. Perhaps adding in time or a procedure which allows responses to evidence added close to the deadline is needed. Hopefully the next few days will be enough to respond to the evidence added close to the deadline. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 14:47, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
Hey, did you see my comment? [2] Without the rebuttals its below 1000 words, so its ok? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 00:09, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Supreme Deliciousness, I hadn't until now. However, an arbitrator confirmed that I should ask you to shorten your evidence. If you would like to request an extension, then request at the /Evidence subpage or email the arbitrators directly. Otherwise, please shorten your submission. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 09:23, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Does that arbitrator know that my main evidence is below 1000 words without the rebuttals? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 11:28, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Supreme Deliciousness, they didn't ask, but I can relay this and ask therefore if the length is acceptable. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 12:16, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- To add, I have asked on clerk-l about this. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 12:35, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

Jazz, I would like to ad 2 more quotes from GPinkerton, 105 words and 2 links. Is it possible? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 19:01, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- I've asked the arbs. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 19:08, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- No extension? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 22:13, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Supreme Deliciousness, no reply yet. The AIK extension was previously agreed. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 22:14, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- There have been some replies, however, no decision on your request specifically yet. It looks like the phase will remain open for another day, but it is late where I am so I am off for the night. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 00:06, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikipedia app for Android now has watchlists and talk pages in the app. [3]
Changes later this week
- You can see edits to chosen pages on Special:Watchlist. You can add pages to your watchlist on every wiki you like. The GlobalWatchlist extension will come to Meta on 11 February. There you can see entries on watched pages on different wikis on the same page. The new watchlist will be found on Special:GlobalWatchlist on Meta. You can choose which wikis to watch and other preferences on Special:GlobalWatchlistSettings on Meta. You can watch up to five wikis. [4]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 February. It will be on all wikis from 11 February (calendar).
Future changes
- When admins protect pages the form will use the OOUI look. Special:Import will also get the new look. This will make them easier to use on mobile phones. [5][6]
- Some services will not work for a short period of time from 07:00 UTC on 17 February. There might be problems with new short links, new translations, new notifications, adding new items to your reading lists or recording email bounces. This is because of database maintenance. [7]
- Last week Tech News reported that the IP address Cloud VPS and Toolforge use to contact the wikis will change on 8 February. This is delayed. It will happen later instead. [8]
