BracketBot – Dienerto
Political funding in Ireland
Sorry, I am unable to make sense of the hints given to errors. Can anybody help? I'd appreciate that! Khnassmacher (talk) 17:30, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
- Fixed by Mandruss. You had a remnant <ref> tag that wasn't part of a reference. Huon (talk) 19:39, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

"November 2014" type section heads for BracketBot (redux)
I asked about this before but did not receive a response and BracketBot's behavior is the same? Thoughts? --Hammersoft (talk) 14:44, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- @Hammersoft: The previous answer is here. A930913 explained that another benefit is that if someone who gets tagged for vandalism caused a bracket error, that edit is likely to have also been vandalism - so the vandal-fighters are directed to edits that likely should also be reverted. Huon (talk) 17:40, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- But plenty of people who are not vandals are receiving these messages. --Hammersoft (talk) 19:35, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
BracketBot – Nyttend
Page: Boswell, Pennsylvania
Diff: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=633754648
Comment/question: I added File:GENERAL VIEW OF MAIN (SOUTH) FACADE OF CHURCH, LOOKING NORTH (For a brief history of Boswell and a description of Sts. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church see HABS PA,56-BOSW,1-1.tif — note that there's an opening parenthesis in the filename, but no corresponding closing parenthesis. The bot did its job, since I added an odd number of parentheses. As long as we don't get the name wrong, we don't care about a file's name when we're adding it to an article; would it be possible to tell the bot to ignore brackets/parentheses/etc. in filenames?
Nyttend (talk) 02:46, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- I'd expect it's possible, but is it desirable? What's more likely, that mismatched brackets in a file name are deliberate or that they're due to a typo? Huon (talk) 20:17, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- I think it's desirable, if nothing else because someone might think that they'd made a mistake. Since we have to be precise with a filename, I always copy/paste it from the file's page, so it's extremely unlikely that I'd make a typo, and I expect that other people do likewise. Moreover, I can see someone thinking that they'd made a mistake and spend time going back to the page, and someone might even try to "correct" the situation and thereby break a link. Finally, typos are frequent in the actual names of files — a file works regardless of the name it's given, so people are sometimes careless when naming them, and renaming a file to fix a typo is normally a bit of work, especially considering that there's virtually no benefit to correcting a minor error. Block bot
I can block DPL bot and some other bot which used to appear for some minor problem. Is there a way to block ReferenceBot? --Tom (LT) (talk) 01:10, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- @LT910001: ReferenceBot has an extremely low false-positive rate and is unlikely to ever notify you when there wasn't a genuine problem. That said, it is exclusion-compliant; if you don't want it to notify you about problems your edits caused, you can use the {{bots}} template on your talk page to tell ReferenceBot not to edit it. For now I've fixed the issues the bot notified you about. Huon (talk) 14:02, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
