arthur rackham painting of idun

I was looking for images of the Norse goddess Idunn, and came across the photograph of Arthur Rackham's "Idun." I tried to click on the link for the original website, but my browser could not find the server.

Do you know if this and other Arthur Rackham images are in the public domain? If so, please send an e-mail to: andrew_spencer81@yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Andrew Spencer

Hm—it seems that the source link I had provided back in February 2004 indeed has vanished. Anyway, I uploaded the picture based on the assumption that it was public domain (pre-1923). Then it occurred to me that since Rackham was British, I'd better check when he died, and found out that it was in 1939. Hence, the image might not be PD (his works would be copyrighted for 70 years after his death). Or it might, based on the assumption that the image is a simple reproductive scan. Or not, because the image the scan was taken from would be a derivative work... in short, I don't know. Lupo 19:14, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Mr. Diaper vandal

This is not a ban... all he has to do is behave sensibly the next time he creates yet another account. Bans apply to people, not accounts (see for instance attempts to ban Gzormenplatz (sp?) for apparently being a sock puppet of the banned Wik, even though Gzormenplatz has apparently not done anything objectionable under that name). I'm not blocking him on sight, I'm blocking him because he comes back and does the exact same thing that got him blocked previous times: diaper-related disruption and images (the images don't show up in contributions because they are deleted; otherwise, he just logs in later as an anon and uses the images uploaded earlier for further, harder-to-detect vandalism).

I believe he is Wikipedia-savvy... his last account voted in a Votes for Deletion poll as one of its first actions, not something a newbie would do. So if he wanted to file an arbitration he knows how to do it.

I also don't believe he is doing this because he's misguided and clueless; he knows exactly what he's doing. He seems to be getting at least some of the images from some website (one recent one had an URL printed on it), and one of his sock-puppets vandalized a page about a Ukrainian politician. One anon IP he used (219.77.75.200) is Netvigator, Hong Kong. So this isn't some clueless guy sitting in a trailer park somewhere.

Blocking Sud-Pol for only a month or two wouldn't help anything, because he came back with his "Brother Larry" accounts long before such a 1-2 month ban would have expired.

tiny entries

Dear Lupo,

Tiny entries, as you call them, are just the beginning. I am part of a group that wish to define those terms in depth. My sole resposibility is to put them on Wiki. In a week or so entries will grow. I ask only for a bit of patience.

sex toy images

The sex toy images you listed on IFD weren't deleted because noone else commented on them apart from their creator. My apologies for that, I'll try and keep a better eye on IfD. I do believe however that based on the fact that the other images from the set were deleted too that there is strong consensus for deleting these images. I have decided to rather unusually (and I hope it remains something unusual) list them again. I'll also list this at RfC to avoid charges of foul play, but I think you might want to vote on this. Thanks. --fvw* 02:04, 2005 Feb 4 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me. I've left my comment over at IFD. Lupo 07:45, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Toyslove images

Greetings. You recently voted to delete several toyslove images because they were orphans, the copyright status was suspect, and there was a URL to a commercial site on the images. The URL has now been removed, the copyright status has been verified, and two of the images are no longer orphans. I was wondering if you might consider changing your vote. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 20:38, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Lupo. I am once more trying to resolve the dispute related to names of locations with a Polish/German history. I would invite you to vote on Talk:Gdansk/Vote to settle the multi-year dozens-of-pages dispute about the naming of Gdansk/Danzig and other locations. The vote has two parts, one with questions when to use Gdansk/Danzig, and a second part affecting articles related to locations with Polish/German history in general. An enforcement is also voted on. The vote has a total of 10 questions to vote on, and ends in two weeks on Friday, March 4 0:00. Thank you -- Chris 73 Talk 00:59, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

Alexander Graham Bell

I am sorry Lupo, I accidently replaced your image of Alexander Graham Bell in Wikicommons with mine. I could add a description but maybe you want to re-upload your image instead. 195.241.105.124 12:56, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hey Jan, you could upload your image under a different name and add a description. And then you could ask Chris 73 on commons to revert. I don't really care (your image is a nice one, too, albeit a bit dark), it's just having an image vs. description mismatch that bothers me. Lupo 13:04, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Then I will not make the effort to set it back. I will change the description. Thanks.~~

Biographical arcticles

C.f. User talk:Porcher. Lupo 13:35, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hello! Thanks for your message!

I figured you should whether use the initials or the whole name, for aesthetical reasons, but I thank you for your advice. I will change and redirect the biographical articles I have contributed on as soon as I can (N. C. A. da Costa to Newton da Costa; W. H. Young to William Henry Young etc etc).

Image deletion

I removed the ifd request, I agree with you.

Moving this around...

Gee, I'm sorry! I moved it from Renato M.E. Sabbatini to Renato M. E. Sabbatini because I thought the title had to be corrected and that's the only way I know how to do it. I was trying to help.

Jesus, of all things I never noticed the "move" tab. Thanks for the warning!

One question left

Now that things are fixed I'd like to ask: Would it be wrong to move the arcticle from Renato M.E. Sabbatini to Renato M. E. Sabbatini and redirect the former to the latter?

You noticed! Yes, that would actually be correct. But then, also make sure that "Renato" and "R. M. E." are changed from redirects to "Renato M.E." into redirects to "Renato M. E.". Otherwise, these will remain double redirects (redirects to a redirect), which doesn't work. BTW, it is customary to sign messages on talk pages. Just add four tildes (~~~~) to your messages; the software will replace them by your signature and a timestamp. Lupo 14:19, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
BTW, if you move the page, the old title will automatically become a redirect to the new title, you won't have to do that manually. Lupo 14:24, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'll do that and then I'll forget the Sabbatini page, since I consider it to be autobiographical and falling under the concept of vanity page. So I'll just step back. Thanks for your tips once again! Porcher 14:26, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I agree that it's a borderline case. However, he does seem to be noteable enough, and as far as I could verify it, it also is factually correct, so the only flaw the page has is that he wrote it himself. If somebody else had written it (even he himself under a pseudonym or as a non-logged-in user), nobody would question that article. In my opinion, it falls on this side of the line. I prefer having articles about noteable professors than Pokémons or other fancruft about obscure fictional characters in (in-)significant books or films. Lupo 14:31, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

the Schillings

I have seen the reference. The two Schillings are often confused, and that's just some statement on a random webpage. The drawings of the Berner+Spiezer Schillings are in a quite different style from the Luzerner one, and this Laupen image is definitely either Berner or Spiezer. I don't have an edition here, right now, but I can find out. (The Zurich one has yet again a very different style, but it is quite inferior in comparison, and assumed to be illustrated by a beginner). The mercenaries image (Luzerner Schilling, compare the style) I found on the web. I was planning on scanning a few images from "Die Welt der Schweizer Bilderchroniken", which I have here, but I haven't got round to it yet. best regards, dab () 09:05, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I do (have background information), but I scribbled it on a slip of paper which I cannot find now :o) give me a couple of days, a friend of mine has a complete edition (not faksimile) of the Luzerner one, and I was going to state folio and all, so that the website I got the scan from would become irrelevant. btw, the Laupen website states "Cronica di Lucerna di D. Schilling, fine sec.XV", which is impossible. Either it's "fine sec.XV" and an Elder Schilling, as I claim, or it's from the "Cronica di Lucerna", but then "inizio sec.XVI"! Seeing this inconsistency, you should just discard that information altogether. Btw, the mercenaries are deserting, on this particular image, they are fed up with some campaign in Italy, and sneak off home (crossing the Alps South to North). As I said, I'll provide exact folio number and context as soon as I can. dab () 09:17, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
ah, re the woman, it's a so-called Marketenderin, a woman on campaign with landsknechts: cheap workforce and sex-worker in combination. The elder Diebold depicts them very ladylike, while the younger gives a very realistic image of hard-boiled, tough women, who could also hold their own when the battle went ill. Btw, [1] has a lot of scans of the Luzerner Schilling, but unfortunately in very low resolution. dab () 09:24, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

That's fine — my confusion was stemming from the fact that the "Habitants: Renards" had been there from the beginning, and so I assumed it was genuine. Looking back, though, I realize that the original author was probably the same troll that's been adding nonsense to all Switerland-related articles... — Asbestos | Talk 16:10, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, the problem is that the "renard" stuff is even in the original version on fr:Apples, written by the esteemed editor fr:Utilisateur:Greatpatton... I don't quite understand what this anon is doing: obviously, he's trying to import things from fr:, but then he puts in spurious nonsense. Oh, and I'm sorry about forgetting the sig. Urheberrecht

Mal schauen was dabei rauskommt. Herzliche Gruesse -- Chris 73 Talk 04:15, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

Of course; I had no intention of removing that image. But from what I can see, it clearly is not PD. It's copyrighted and {{fairuse}}.
As to just accepting his word: maybe. But his actions (and reactions) don't exactly make me confident that he is well versed in copyright issues. At the very least, he should be able to provide verifiable references if he claims things marked as © were actually PD.
Yes, I had seen the nomination and planned to take a closer look. Lupo 07:41, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Well, lets hope I get a useful response. I'll let you know if I get anything. Also, thanks for your vote. Happy editing -- Chris 73 Talk 11:05, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

Lupo!

I totally forgot to send you a message! Yeah, I'm leaving Wikipedia - not because of the people (they are an amazing bunch - even the controversial ones) and not because of the project. To be honest it's just that I'm a Christian whose spent too much time on here. I want to get more involved in my church, but I can't also spend large amounts of time on Wikipedia. My church is struggling at the moment (not because of me, of course) and I've burnt a few bridges along the way, but I needed to choose between Wikipedia and Christianity. I chose Christianity. This isn't to say I think that Christians can't edit Wikipedia! It's just I'm a bit of a victim of my own success and I have spent too long on Wikipedia.

So I'm going cold turkey. No more Wikipedia :(

I'd like to thank you for your confidence in me in submitting me for admin candidacy! Your advise and mentorship over the months has been most valuable. Keep up the good work Lupo. I have a lot of respect for the work you do around here! - Ta bu shi da yu 23:03, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks mate :) Of all the people, I'll probably add a message to your talk page every now and then. Just don't tell anyone, k? And do me a favour? Make sure that Everyking, Dr Zen and Netoholic get treated fairly. They can be difficult at tiimes, but they are valuable and not bad sorts. All the best mate. - Ta bu shi da yu 08:13, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

My adminship

Thank you for voting for me for adminship. I appreciate the confidence you showed in me. By the way, I'm addicted to paper encyclopedias too—textbooks also. monobook.js

Hi, I've noticed that you seem to know a bit about how to construct javascripts, so I'd like to ask you something. On wiktionary, I've tried to create (through my monobook.js file) a script which pastes a block of text into the edit window. Now, what I wonder is: if the block of text I want pasted includes apostrophes, how do I get the script to include them? I've tried with only the apostrophe, with \' and with \\', but none of them works...

I'd need those as part of the usual wiki-markup; right now I use <i> </i> and <b> </b> instead, but that's a bit ugly...

Thanks in advance,
\Mikez 13:57, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, most of what I know about Javascript is general knowledge of programming plus a lot of trial and error... I see three things you could try:
  • Use the hexadecimal code of the apostrophe, i.e. \x27 or \\x27 (don't know which one might work, if at all).
  • Use the double quote " as the outermost string delimiter for the insertTags, i.e. onclick='javascript:insertTags(\" ... \", \"\", \"\");'. Within the argument strings of insertTags, you should then be able to use a plain apostrophe. Though I must admit I would have to look up what insertTags is supposed to do. Why not use document.editform.wpTextbox1.value = document.editform.wpTextbox1.value + "Your text" instead of calling insertTags? And maybe the fact that the whole thing is enclosed in a string already (as the argument to document.write) means that you would have to invert all your string delimiters, i.e. use " for document.write, too, and quote all contained double quotes...
  • Take a look at my monobook.js, especially the functions myPortlet and makeactivelink. It does the same what you are trying to do, but uses Javascript to integrate the portlet (or quickbar) properly into the xhtml sent by the Wiki servers, instead of just blasting it out-of-sequence with a document.write. A call like makeactivelink ("test", "document.editform.wpTextbox1.value = '''Hello''';") produces a link named "test" that replaces the content of the edit box by '''Hello'''.
I would have to experiment, too, to figure out how to do it properly within a single document.write... HTH. Lupo 20:15, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the hint. I only had to try the \\x27 – version; it works perfectly :)
Oh, but concerning your second suggestion (well, I haven't tried it yet...) doesn't that add the block of text at the end of the edit box? That's not quite what I need - I want to be able to place it anywhere in the text... But maybe I should try it out before I complain — as you see, I don't know very much about programming... ;)
Anyway, I appreciate your help. \Mikez 10:16, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
