March flowers

story · music · places

in memory of the birthday of a friend who showed me art such as this, and of Vami --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rossini's Petite messe solennelle was premiered on 14 March 1864, - when I listen to the desolate Agnus Dei I think of Vami. - Also travelling, in the country where the flowers grow and I met some great cats! Just wait ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:57, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: - Returned home last night and just getting caught up... music, flowers, cats, and those who are gone. Safe travels, my friend. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:36, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Travels were safe and wonderful! Returned early morning, and finally managed first day of Madeira pics, with a cat, also with some red like yours today! I'll try to upload one day per day, the next two sets are assembled, you can look forward to three cats around a fish in two days. Actually the fish was already dead and on a plate, and the cats were on the stony beach, and looking closer one is pictured twice. (There were four in waiting ...) - Don't miss today's composer story, with an opera trailer. I briefly and per chance met the composer during intermission of that wild piece. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome back, Gerda. Can I just say that this steak tatare is exquisite. Do you recall what wine was paired with it? (Also, I did notice the nice black and white cat by the red hydrant. For some unknown reason, I've been noticing and including a lot of cat photos by red objects this week, we we are in sync!) --Rosiestep (talk) 17:00, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Acknowledging translation of page from German Wikipedia

I am working on a page on John Toner (see [1]). I started from the German page, translated it using Google translation, and then edited it adding additional information and rephrasing some of the translated page. How do I properly acknowledge the fact I started with a translation of the German page? Mvitulli (talk) 22:38, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mvitulli, and thanks for stopping by. I am glad to know that you are translating from one language Wikipedia into EN-WP. There are so many articles that would qualify for that work, and I find it to be so rewarding.
  • I'll start with a friendly reminder that the translated article needs to meet the policies of EN-WP, e.g., WP:N, WP:RS, and so forth. So, regarding the John Joseph Toner biography in your sandbox5, I noticed that a couple of paragraphs don't have inline citations. Theoretically, someone might want to delete them for that reason. Best practice is for the translator to find reliable sources to support the unsourced content when doing a translation; OR, don't include the unsourced paragraph on EN-WP.
  • With each edit you save, the edit summary should be in accordance with: Help:Translation. This is to say that, in the example of Mr. Toner, each save that includes translation would have the following edit summary: Content in this edit is translated from the existing German Wikipedia article at de:John Joseph Toner; see its history for attribution..
  • On Mr. Toner's talkpage, you would add, underneath the WikiProjects: {{Translated page|de|John Joseph Toner}}
In 2023, I did a lot of translations from FR-WP and ES-WP (you can view them on my list of articles created in 2023). By way of example, see Fanny Clar; that article's Edit Summaries are viewable here and its talkpage translation note is viewable here. Hope all of this is clear and helpful, but I'd be happy to answer other questions if you wish. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:32, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I provided similar explanations on MLG's talk page. As it looks to me as if the draft is ready for mainspace, I have suggested that the move would be a good opportunity to mention the translation in the edit comment. But as you suggest, it would be useful to add citations to the paragraphs in question, e.g. using this APS source. It seems to me that some of the sources already included could also be re-cited in this connection. I would be happy to take care of the move if Mvitulli would like me to do so.--Ipigott (talk) 09:18, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Ipigott. cc: Mvitulli and Megalibrarygirl. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:52, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both, Rosiestep and Ipigott! I knew you would know exactly what to do. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:05, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
