Angelique Kerber is the defending champion.

Simona Halep, Garbiñe Muguruza, Elina Svitolina, Karolína Plíšková, Caroline Wozniacki, Johanna Konta, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Venus Williams are all in contention for the WTA no. 1 singles ranking at the beginning of the tournament. With last year's US Open points removed, Halep has the most ranking points. In order to have a chance of surpassing Halep and reaching (or retaining) the top ranking, Muguruza must reach at least the fourth round, Svitolina must reach at least the semifinals, Plíšková must reach the final, and Wozniacki, Konta, Kuznetsova or Williams must win the title.[1]

This is Maria Sharapova's first Grand Slam appearance since the 2016 Australian Open due to a suspension for doping. Sharapova was awarded a wildcard into the main draw.
