The 67th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen (第67回NHK紅白歌合戦) is the 67th and upcoming edition of NHK's Kōhaku Uta Gassen, to be held in December 31, 2016, live from NHK Hall starting 19:15 (JST), and finishing around 23:45 (JST), with a 5-minute break for latest news. This is the 28th and most probably final Heisei Era edition, due to the possible abdication of Emperor Akihito announced on July 13, 2016. Broadcasting time was announced on September 8.
This year's theme is: "Yume o Utaō" (Let's sing a dream).
Broadcast
NHK revealed on September 8 that the 67th Kouhaku will air on December 31 (Saturday), starting from 19:15 JST and ending at 23:45 JST, with a 5-minute break for latest news. On Japan, the broadcast is made by NHK-G and Radio 1, and worldwide by NHK World Premium. In United States, the show's broadcast is made through the TV Japan, starting around 05:15 (Eastern Time). Viewers outside Japan can watch the Kouhaku on NHK World Premium, at 10:15 UTC airing on a same time with NHK-G. This year's theme is "Let's sing a dream" (夢を歌おう). It was revealed that the theme, "Let's sing a dream", will remain unchanged from this year onward until the 70th edition in 2019, in support of the impending 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics.[1]
On November 12, Kasumi Arimura and Aiba Masaki were announced as the captains of the Red and White Teams, respectively. On November 24, the list of program artists were announced as well as this year's mediator, Shinichi Takeda.
A special showcase from this year's Taiga Drama Sanada Maru is also being planned.
Performances Speculation
SMAP announced its disband for later this year, and since then it began to draw their attention to their final appearance on Kouhaku. Several rumors began circulating in the Japanese press.
For the SMAP, the news is that the group most likely will decline their participation in this Kouhaku. After their disband announcement (August 2016), NHK revealed that his intention is to make an offering to SMAP to perform his "last stage" in Kouhaku, to bid farewell to the fans.
AKB48 which sold over 4 million singles in 2016, was held their AKB48 Fes 2016 along with other 48G sister groups, and aired October 22, only on Japan. However, Haruka Shimazaki will graduate from the group late this year, and this Kouhaku may be a chance for Paruru perform her final stage as idol with AKB48.
Momoiro Clover Z wasn't performed last year because were not invited, and may return this year due to other important factor: Kanako Momota is currently on the main cast from Beppinsan which was premiered October 03. MCZ has been released two albums simultaneaosly, "Amaranthus" and "Hakkin no Yoake". In September, "The Golden History" was released.
Arashi is also one of artists which will perform this year, due to Aiba's leading Shirogumi for the sixth time (counting other five contests with all Arashi members).
Kimi no Na wa
NHK invited RADWIMPS to perform "Kohaku Uta Gassen" for the first time, due the band's involvement in what the company called a film that "symbolized the year". The band released the movie soundtrack "Your Name", from animation picture of same name.

Trivia
- This year's theme was announced toward the 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games which will held in Tokyo, and 4 years from now, the 70th Kouhaku Utagassen will take place in support from these events.
- This could be the final appearance of SMAP on this program. The group will disband at end of 2016.[3]
- There is a chance that Haruka Shimazaki will perform her last activity as AKB48 Member at Kouhaku, as she will graduate in late December.
- Once again Arashi is confirmed for Kouhaku, as Masaki Aiba will be captain for the sixth time of the White Team (counting the other five times along with the other members of Arashi between 2010 and 2014).
- Kasumi Arimura will be the main star from Asadora Hiyokko, which premieres April 2017.
- On November 21, Takashi Hosokawa refused his invitation and announced his honorary retirement from Kouhaku. Akiko Wada will not attend this year.
