Kishen Das is an Indian actor, content creator and YouTuber, known for his role in the Tamil film Mudhal Nee Mudivum Nee which is streaming on ZEE5.[1][2][3] Kishen also hosts the popular show Menu Please on Youtube for Netflix, some of his guests over the years have been Anil Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Neeraj Madhav etc.[4][5]
Early life
Kishen was born on 26 April 1997 in Chennai.[6] His mother Brinda Das is a well-known theatre and television actor. In many interviews Kishen has mentioned that he was a very silent child growing up who was average at anything and everything. Life took a turn when he ventured into theatre in Chettinad Vidyashram, under the guidance of Mr Jayakumar Janakiraman of the Koothupattarai. His interest for performing and acting began just around then and was a part of Chennai's theatre circuit till college. His love for cinema and media saw him fall for the effective cliche of Visual Communication at Loyola College, Chennai. Knowing that the competition in the field was unreal and in an attempt to get a head start, Kishen ventured out in search of some work when he found Fully Filmy. Kishen's association with Fully Filmy began in 2016 when he was working part-time and studying at Loyola and went on till 2019 when he decided to actively look for acting work. During his time at Fully Filmy, he was known for Fully Rewind, a show wherein he would present listicles about cinema and the infamous '2 minute reviews' which were very popular back then.[7][8][9][10]
Apart from his youtube work, he has also featured in multiple national advertisements and takes pride in being a content creator on Instagram who works with brands on a regular basis. His podcast 'Timepass with Das' which he began in 2019 officially became a Spotify Original in May 2022.[11]
Film career
During his stint at Fully Filmy, he came across an audition announcement for a film shared by Gautham Vasudev Menon. Being the fanboy he is, he applied and went through 4-5 rounds of auditions and meetings before he was cast in this untitled project directed by the famous Mr X a.k.a. Darbuka Siva. They began filming this ensemble in 2019 with updates on the project, songs, and teasers consecutively. The title of the film was revealed to be Mudhal Nee Mudivum Nee or MNMN, coined after the famous lines from his previous song 'Maruvaarthai'. The film also saw the hit combo of Darbuka Siva, Thamarai and Sid Sriram collaborate on the title track of the film which amassed over 65 million streams/views overall. MNMN was released on Zee5 OTT on 21 January 2022 and was met with positive responses. Kishen played the role of Vinoth, a school going boy whose love for music and hatred for studies overtook everything in life. His love for Rekha and his dynamic with Rekha dictated his storyline in the film. The film won multiple awards and special mentions since its release.[12][13][14]
Kishen's second outing was Sync, a Tamil Independent Horror film that currently streams on aha (streaming service). Sync released in July 2023 to mixed reports. In an interview with Cinema Express, Kishen explained the intricacies of making, selling and featuring in a film of such small scale. The team completed primary filiming in May 2022 and found it difficult to find a platform for their film. During march 2023, Kishen took to his twitter profile to seek OTT platforms that would be interested to take the film and they had a few offers. The makers of the film mentioned that it was Aha's attitude towards the film that made them want to proceed with that platform. Sync received mix reviews with some liking the simplistic horror elements that the film tried to achieve while the others weren't convinced with the thrill that the film had to offer.
Post the filming of Sync, Kishen signed to play a supporting character in Rj Balaji's Singapore Saloon that was bankrolled by Ishari K. Ganesh and Vels Films International. The film began filming in August 2022 in Pallavaram. The film is based on 2 kids who aspire to open a saloon and obstacles that come in between their dream. The film is directed by Gokul (director) of Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara fame. The music is scored by <<Vivek–Mervin>>. Kishen is said to be playing RJ Balaji's close friend who also aspires to open the Saloon. The film also has a stellar cast of veteran actors like Sathyaraj who is said to have done a very quirky character that we haven't seen much of from him, while Lal (actor) is also said to do a primary character. On 5 January 2024, <<Red Giant Movies>> announced that they would be releasing the film in Tamil Nadu and the film is set to be released around the end of January, 2024.
In June 2023, Kishen signed to be a part of a Romantic Thriller film Tharunam directed by Arvind Srinivasan who previously directed Dejavu (2022 film). The film also has Smruthi Venkat playing the female lead with Darbuka Siva scoring the music. This film marks Kishen's second collaboration with Darbuka Siva. The film is said to be shot in Chennai and is an interesting plot. In an interview, the DOP Raja Bhattacharjee mentioned that it is a film with 2 distinct genres, calling it a romantic thriller. The films has completed production and is set to release in the first half of 2024.
Post the completion of Tharunam, Kishen began shooting for the emotional drama <<Eerapadham Kaatru Mazhai>>, directed by debutant Saleem R Badshah. The film also stars Vetri and Deepthie. It is said to be an emotional thriller about 3 people, each representing the title of Moisture, Wind and Rain. Sharing details on the storyline, Saleem explains, "The film revolves around the life of three people - Sudharshan, Kani and Methini who have a negative arc and their lives have a devastating beginning. The film won't have a traditional three-act format but has an unorthodox structure." Speaking about the characters, the director says, "Vetri as Sudharshan has an uncontrollable urge to strangle people when he sees their necks. He isolates himself due to this, but he has a dream to explore and experience life. Methini has a mindset that life has no value and doesn't express her emotions. Kishen as Kani does highway robbery for a living and can potentially cause grave harm to others. How these three arcs come together forms the rest of the story." The film is backed by IB Karthikeyan under the banner Big Print Pictures. The film's shoot is almost complete as the team looks to bring the film out in theatres in 2024.
