Dusmareb (Somali: Dhusamareeb, Arabic: دوسمريب, Italian: Dusa Mareb) or Dhusamareb, is the capital of the Galguduud region and administrative capital of Galmudug state in central Somalia.

Located in the heart of Dusmareb District, Dusmareb is one of the largest cities in the Galguduud region and is a rapidly developing city located in the heart of Somalia.

Historically, the city was known as Daar Dheer or simply Dardher but later in time the city's name changed to Dusmareb also spelled Dhusamareb. The name means "which does not hold farts in," referring to a pit with thermal water.[1]

Location

Dusmareb is 511 km from Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia. The highway that connects the north and the south of the country goes through the city. Dusmareb along with Adado, Guriceel, Godinlabe, Mareergur, El Dhere and many other cities and towns in the Galgaduud are rapidly developing with their economies booming due to their strategic position in the country. They sit in the heart of the country where all the goods across the country go through. All of the land transportation use these cities as transit hubs where they refurbish their goods at. Dusmareb has borders with El Buur to the east Guriceel to the south, Adado to north and Abudwak to the northwest.

Demographics

As of 2016 the broader Dusmareb District had a population of 390,407 inhabitants.[2] As with most of Galmudug, it is primarily inhabited by Somalis from the Hiraab sub-clan of the Hawiye, particularly the Yabardhowrkace, Absiye, and Ayanle sub clans of Ayr (clan), a Sub-clan of Habar Gidir.

Education

There are many universities located across the City, the most prominent one being Dusmareb University which provides undergraduate degrees.[3]

Air transportation in Dusmareb is served by Dusmareb Airport.

Hospitals

Several health centers exist in the city, among them is Dusmareb General Hospital.

Sports

There are many sports facilities in the city, among them are 2 training facilities and one stadium that hosts regional and local championships. in mid 2016 and early 2017 the Mayor of the city Noor elmi Abdulle inaugurated two new football (soccer) training facilities in the city in what was a campaign to restore and bring new sports facilities for the youth of the city.
