Pandian is a 1992 Indian Tamil-language action film, directed by Tamil director S. P. Muthuraman. It stars Rajinikanth, Kushboo, Janagaraj and Jayasudha. It was released on 25 October 1992 as one among Deepavali releases, along with Thevar Magan. The film's music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja and his son Karthik Raja. This film was a remake of the Kannada film Bombay Dada, starring Tiger Prabhakar and also directed by him. Tiger Prabhakar portrayed the antagonist in the remake. The film ran for more than 100days in Chennai alone . It was dubbed in Telugu as Secret Police and Hindi as Kanoon Ka Khiladi.

Plot

The film is about Pandian (Rajinikanth), who wants to avenge his sister's (Jayasudha) husband's (Charan Raj) death. He joins the murderer's gang and how he takes revenge forms the crux. Then the gang came to know that Pandiyan did an undercover operation, Pandiyan was a police officer. The rest of the story deals with how Pandiyan caught the culprit, with stylish approach.

Production

Rajinikanth decide to make a low-budget film with director S. P. Muthuraman. Muthuraman produced the film under his production banner "Visalam Productions", named after his mother. Although not being a producer, Rajini took care of production duties of the film along with A. V. M. Saravanan. Rajini decided to act in the film to contribute for the retirement fund of main crew members of the S. P. Muthuraman team who were regulars in most of the latter's films.[2] Rajini acted in the film without taking any remuneration. Even though the film made some money and whatever money grossed were used for the retirement fund of director Muthuraman's crew.[3] Tragedy struck before release, when Muthuraman's wife died.[4] The original title was Nanban.[5]

Soundtrack

Music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja while Ilaiyaraaja's son Karthik Raja composed "Pandianin Rajyathil".[6]

Release

The movie was released on the same day as Kamal's Thevar Magan, to mixed reviews. All the other top artist movies are successful other than Rajinikanth. Prabhu (actor)'s Senthamizh Pattu, Sathyaraj's Thirumathi Palanisamy and K.Bhagyaraj's Rasukutti were in 4th, 3rd and 2nd respectively in Diwali race after Kamal's Thevar Magan. This movie spotted 5th place in Diwali Race. Due to its response and clash with these films, Pandiyan emerged as an average hit / flop at the box office. The Indian Express called it "a typical Rajini film; a mishmash of all ingredients formulated to please his fans".[7] New Straits Times wrote "This 135-minute movie is only for hard-core Rajini fans".[8]
