The Anselmianum, also known as the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm (Italian: Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo; Latin: Pontificium Athenaeum Anselmianum) is a pontifical university in Rome associated with the Benedictines.[1] It offers courses in philosophy, theology and liturgy, philosophy and mysticism, monastic studies, languages, sacramental theology and theological history. It is located next to the church Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino (Saint Anselm on the Aventine).

Since 5 December 2019, the Rector Magnificus of the Anselmianum is Dom Bernhard A. Eckerstorfer, O.S.B.[2]

History

The University was restored in its present form by Pope Leo XIII in 1887,[3] created in honour of St. Anselm of Canterbury.

Activities

Sant'Anselmo receives students from Benedictine congregations from around the world to "provide theological training to Benedictines and other congregations of the Church Universal".[4]

The Institute was canonically established by the Apostolic See as a faculty of Sacred Liturgy of the Pontifical University of St. Anselm in order to promote liturgical science through research and teaching. As such it is empowered to grant, in the name of the Pope, the academic degrees of License (SL.L.) and Doctorate (SL.D.)

The university's library was established with gifts from various Benedictine congregations and the personal collections of Cardinal Dusmet Gaetano Bernardino, and has since grown to become a substantial source of theological research material.[citation needed] As of 2018 the librarian is Dom Joseph Schneeweis, O.S.B.
