Oksana Serhiyivna Markarova (Ukrainian: Оксана Сергіївна Маркарова; born 28 October 1976[1] in Rivne) is a Ukrainian politician and a former Minister of Finance in the government of Volodymyr Groysman and Oleksiy Honcharuk.[2] She was acting Finance Minister since 8 June 2018[3] acting after Oleksandr Danylyuk was dismissed on 7 June 2018 after a conflict with Groysman.[4]

Early life and education

In 1999 Markarova received a master's degree in Ecology at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.[1] In 2001 she got a master's degree in Public Finance and Trade at Indiana University.[1]

Career

Until transferring to the civil service in 2015, Markarova worked in the private sector.[1] Starting March 2015 Markarova was Deputy Minister of Finance under successive ministers Natalie Jaresko and Oleksandr Danylyuk.[1] Having in prior years worked with Jaresko at a US-backed[clarification needed] investment fund in Kiev, Markarova joined her as a deputy minister in 2015 to help usher the country through an IMF programme and restructure foreign debt after Russia occupied Crimea.[5]

After Oleksandr Danylyuk was dismissed on 7 June 2018 after a conflict with Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman[4][6] Markarova was appointed acting Minister of Finance on 8 June 2018.[3] On 22 November 2018 the Ukrainian parliament appointed her as Minister of Finance.[2] The start of the Shmyhal Government on 4 March 2020 was the end of her tenure as Minister of Finance.[7] After her dismissal Markarova returned to the private sector and her work on the supervisory board of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.[8]

Personal life

Markarova is married to banker and businessman Danylo Volynets. The family has four children (two daughters of a husband from the first marriage and two common ones).[10]
