"How You Like That" on YouTube |
"How You Like That" is a song recorded by South Korean girl group Blackpink. It was released on June 26, 2020, through YG and Interscope, as the first pre-release single from the group's upcoming debut Korean-language studio album, Blackpink: The Album, which is set for release on October 2, 2020. The track was co-written by Teddy and Danny Chung and produced by Teddy, R. Tee and 24.[2]
An accompanying music video for the song was directed by Seo Hyun-seung and uploaded onto Blackpink's YouTube channel simultaneously with the single's release. Upon release, the music video broke various records, including the record for the most watched premiere, the record for the most views within 24 hours for a music video, accumulating 86.3 million views, as well as records for fastest to 100 million and 200 million views, and quickly became one of the most-liked videos on YouTube with over 14 million likes.
Commercially, the single charted in 26 countries. It peaked at number one in South Korea (both Gaon and K-Pop Hot 100), Singapore and Malaysia.[3] It tied the group's collaboration with Lady Gaga "Sour Candy" as the highest charting song by a female Korean act on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 33.
Background and release
On May 4, 2020, it was reported that the group had finished recording their new album and were working on a schedule to shoot a music video later that month.[4] On May 18, YG Entertainment shared an update on the project, projected for a June 2020 release, and revealed that more than ten songs were expected for their first full-length album.[5] On June 10, YG Entertainment released the teaser poster to the single on social media and confirmed the comeback date to be June 26.[6] Three days later, YG Entertainment released a prologue of the group's newest reality show, 24/365 with Blackpink, ahead of its launch on July 4th,[7] via YouTube. The show documents their comeback alongside sharing their lives through vlogs.[8] According to member Jisoo in the prologue of 24/365 with Blackpink, the song represented a move from previous "powerful" music, describing it as more "swag".[9]
On June 15, YG Entertainment released individual posters of the members.[10] The following day, new teaser posters unveiled the name of the pre-release single, "How You Like That", for the first time.[10] More teaser photos were released on June 17,[11] and concept videos featuring the members were released on June 18 and 19.[12][13][14][15] Concept photos were revealed on June 20,[16] and the teaser video was released a day later.[17] The official group teaser poster was revealed on June 22.[18] The music video teaser was released on June 24, and the song officially premiered on June 26, 2020, after an hour-long live countdown.[19] A physical version of the single was released on July 17, 2020, featuring the song and its instrumental.[20]
Commercial performance
In South Korea, the song debuted at no. 12 on the Gaon Digital Chart on the chart issue dated June 21–27, 2020, with less than two days of tracking.[21] The following week (June 28–July 4) it reached number-one on the chart, making it Blackpink's third single to do so, after "Whistle" (2016) and "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" (2018).[22] It topped the chart for three weeks and became the first song by a group since "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" to top the Gaon Monthly chart.[23] The physical version of the single debuted at no. two of the Gaon Album Chart, peaking at number one the following week.[24] It sold 299,640 copies in the country as of August 2020.[25] On Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 it debuted at no. 50 on issue date June 27, reaching the top the following week (July 4).[26] [27] In Japan, the single debuted at number 24 on the Oricon Combined Singles Chart with 8,219 downloads sold and 1,804,749 streams in its first three days.[28][29][30] On Billboard Japan's Hot 100, it debuted at no. 17 with 3,952 estimated units, peaking at no. eight the following week with 6,321 estimated units.[31][32] The song peaked at number one in Malaysia and Singapore for five weeks each.
In the United States, the song debuted at no. 33 of the Billboard Hot 100, tying "Sour Candy" as the highest charting song by a female Korean act.[33] It sold 16,400 copies in its release week and left the chart after two weeks.[34][35] It reached the top twenty in Australia, Canada, Estonia, Hungary, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Scotland.
Music video
The music video for "How You Like That" is directed by Seo Hyun-seung,[36] who previously directed "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" and "Kill This Love". Its music video currently holds the record of being the most streamed music video premiere in YouTube with 1.66 million concurrent viewers.[1] It later went on to become YouTube's most viewed video in its first 24 hours, where they racked over 86.3 million views in said timespan – a record they still hold.[37] The music video also became the fastest music video in YouTube history to hit 100 million views, doing so in around 32 hours after the video's release.[38] The video reached 200 million views in around 7 days, the fastest to reach the mark. It also is amongst the most-liked videos on YouTube with over 14 million likes. As of August 2020, the music video has amassed over 400 million views. On July 6, the dance performance video for 'How You Like That' was uploaded on Blackpink’s official YouTube channel.
Controversy sparked on social media after the release of the music video due to a portrayal of the Hindu god Ganesha in Lisa’s solo scene. In the scene, a statue of Lord Ganesha was shown to be used as a prop and was placed on the floor, which many fans had deemed as cultural appropriation inappropriate. The statue of Lord Ganesha was subsequently edited out of the video.[39]
