Barton Hall, also known as the Cunningham Plantation, is an antebellum plantation house built for Armstead Barton in the 1840s at his cotton plantation near present-day Cherokee, Alabama.
Today US 72 passes north of the house and the Natchez Trace Parkway is to the west. The house is in the former town of Buzzard Roost, now part of an unincorporated area.[2]
Architecture
The National Park Service describes the home as an unusually sophisticated Greek Revival-style plantation house, unusual in form for Alabama. It has a small Doric entrance and limestone-paved rear courtyard.
In addition, its interior stairway is unique, "an interesting arrangement similar to the stair- way in the Magnolias of Aberdeen, Mississippi, built in 1850."[3] It ascends in a series of double flights and bridge-like landings to an observatory on the rooftop that offers views of the plantation.[3]
Landmark
The house was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973 for the quality of its architecture.[1][3]
In November 2008, the noted photographer Charles Moore took his final documented images on this property.
The home continues to be privately owned and occupied, and it is not open to the public.
