Bates Motel is an American drama television series developed for television by Carlton Cuse, Kerry Ehrin and Anthony Cipriano, produced by Universal Television for A&E.[1]

The series, being a "contemporary prequel"[2][3] to the 1960 film Psycho (based on Robert Bloch's novel of the same name), depicts the life of Norman Bates and his mother Norma prior to the events portrayed in Hitchcock's film, albeit in a different fictional town ("White Pine Bay, Oregon," as opposed to the film's "Fairvale, California") and in a modern, 21st-century setting. The series begins after the death of Norma's husband, when she purchases a motel located in a coastal Oregon town so she and Norman can start a new life.[1][4][5]

The series was filmed in Aldergrove, British Columbia, Canada and premiered on March 18, 2013, at 10 pm ET/PT.[6][7][8] A&E chose to skip a pilot of the series, opting to go straight-to-series by ordering a 10-episode first season.[1]

On April 8, 2013, A&E renewed Bates Motel for a second season, following critical acclaim and strong ratings.[9] It is set to air in 2014 and filming will begin in the summer of 2013.[10][11]

Widow Norma Bates and her 17-year old son, Norman move from Arizona to White Pine Bay, Oregon, where they buy a rundown motel after the sudden death of Norma's husband. Norma intends to reopen the motel in an attempt to build a new life for her and her son. When the former owner of the motel, Keith Summers, breaks into the house and rapes Norma, Norman knocks him out. When Summers regains consciousness, Norma murders him. The duo dump the body in the bay harbor. Norman finds a sketchbook full of drawings that show women being tortured. Similarly, a woman is seen drugged and chained somewhere unknown.

Tension arises when Dylan, Norma's son from a previous relationship, arrives. Norman and his friends witness Bradley's father get into a car accident, badly burned. Norman is partnered with Emma for an English project. Emma and Norman look into the mystery of the sketchbook; Emma kisses Norman. After Dylan makes disparaging comments about their mother, Norman unsuccessfully attempts to bludgeon him. Deputy Shelby suggests to Norma that the town's wealth was earned through illegal means. Norma sees a body hanging upside down, burning on fire, in the middle of town, witnessed by townspeople; this shows "justice" is often resolved extrajudicially. Dylan persuades Norma to let him stay by threatening to talk about her late husband, Sam. Emma and Norman stumble upon a massive marijuana field.

Even though Norma doesn't believe Shelby would have anyone in the basement she checks the next night she stays over. Bradley and Norman bond and end up sleeping together. When Norma finds out about this, she becomes upset; Dylan confronts her, stating he knows what she has done, giving him the right to take Norman to stay with him. Norma is arrested for Summers' murder.

Dylan borrows $5,000 from Ethan, the partner from his new job. A drug addict shoots Ethan and Dylan rushes him to the hospital. Emma and Norman travel to Summer's abandoned boat and find the girl. Dylan sees the man who shot Ethan and runs him over. Norman and Emma show Norma the girl from Shelby's basement, causing Norma to finally believe them.

Dylan and Norman find Summers' belt and throw it into the harbor. Shelby finds the girl from his basement at the Bates Motel; the girl flees as Shelby chases her with a gun. He returns and holds them all at gunpoint. He assaults Norma and Norman attacks him angrily. Dylan kills Shelby to save the family, and reveals that he intends to tell the police. Norma reveals the truth about Norman's father's death: Norman killed him in a fit of rage after seeing his father beating Norma, and has absolutely no recollection of it, believing his father's death was truly an accident. Norma confides to Dylan that Norman needs to be protected.

Sheriff Romero arrives at the scene but makes up a story that he caught and killed Deputy Shelby in a gun fight; the reason he is doing this is unknown. Dylan meets Jake Abernathy, who checks into the motel, as he had Room 9 reserved for a week every two months before Summers sold the motel. Norma hires Emma to work at the motel. Norman grows close to a stray dog, whom he names "Juno". Jake convinces Norma to allow him access to every room for two weeks in a certain month, claiming that he had the same deal with Summers as business partners. Bradley tells Norman that they are not meant for each other. Norman witnesses Juno being hit and killed by a car, and is devastated.

Emma's father, Will, starts to teach Norman taxidermy after Norman takes his dead dog to him to be stuffed. Norman's school principal calls Norma about Norman's recent behavior. Norma agrees to have Norman meet with a psychologist, who suggests that Norma herself may have control issues over her son. Bradley is upset that Norman told Emma they had sex, calling it a mistake. Norman is mad that Emma told Bradley's friends that he and Bradley had sex; Emma explains she was sticking up for Norman because Bradley's friends were saying Norman would never have a chance with Bradley. Jake reveals to Norma that he knows the full story about Shelby and Summers; she later kicks Jake out in retaliation. Norma meets the trimmers Dylan had picked up earlier and gives them all rooms at the motel. She decides to take Dylan out to dinner to thank him for bringing new customers, but is horrified to see the autopsied corpse of Zack Shelby on her bed.

After telling Romero that she thinks that Jake put Shelby's corpse on her bed, Norma realizes in a conversation with Dylan that his job is guarding an illegal field of marijuana. Bradley convinces Dylan to help her reclaim some of her father's things from his office. After receiving some flowers and a threatening note in the mail, Norma puts the motel on the sale market and buys a house in Hawaii for her and Norman to move into once their home is sold. Meanwhile, Miss Watson wants Norman's creative short story to be published, but needs Norma's permission. A trimmer named Gunner gives Emma a pot cupcake in a package; she gives into temptation and eats it. At the office, Bradley finds love letters exchanged between her father and someone known as "B"; she breaks down crying. Miss Watson decides to publish the story without Norma's permission, while Norma is told by her realtor that the property won't go up for sale. As she angrily leaves, she is shocked to find Jake in her car with a pistol. Jake reveals that Shelby owed him $150k and threatens to kill her unless she delivers the money to him the next night at midnight. Norma agrees.

Norma informs Sheriff Romero about Jake's threat. Romero agrees to deal with it himself and retrieves the money from his own garage. Norman asks Emma to the dance, also witnessing Dylan and Bradley growing closer, which infuriates Norman, although he tries to keep it at bay. Dylan teaches Norma how to use a pistol in case she needs to defend herself from Jake. Before Norman leaves for the dance, Norma reveals to him something she has never told anyone else: that her brother used to make her sleep with him. At the dance, Norman is punched by Bradley's boyfriend. As Norman angrily walks home, he is picked up by Miss Watson, and she invites him inside her house. Meanwhile, Norma comes to the dock early and witnesses a confrontation between Jake and Romero, who tricks Jake into bending over to retrieve the money, then shoots him dead. At Miss Watson's house, Norman watches his teacher undress and becomes increasingly aroused. A vision of Norma convinces Norman that Miss Watson is attempting to seduce him, at which point Norman advances to her room, and is then shown running home blankly. He runs into Norma as she pulls in to the driveway, and they embrace. Everything seems at rest until Miss Watson's dead body is shown lying on the ground at her house, wearing a "B" necklace.

Season 2: 2014

On April 8, 2013, Bates Motel was renewed for a second season, to contain 10 episodes and will air in 2014.[28]

Production

Cuse has cited the drama series Twin Peaks as a key inspiration for Bates Motel, stating: "We pretty much ripped off Twin Peaks... If you wanted to get that confession, the answer is yes. I loved that show. They only did 30 episodes. Kerry [Ehrin] and I thought we'd do the 70 that are missing."[29]

Series writer Bill Balas actually has cystic fibrosis, and was the inspiration for the Emma Decody character being afflicted with the disease. [30]

Reception

The show currently has a score of 65 on Metacritic, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[31] On its premiere night, it broke rating records for an original drama series on A&E. It drew in a strong 3 million viewers total including a total of 1.6 million viewers watching it in the 18-49 demographic.[32]
